l This invention relates to certain improvements in'c'an openers; and the natureL and objects of the invention will be readily recognized and understood byy those skilled in ther art in the light of the following explanation and detailed description of the accompanying drawings illustrating what I at present conmechanical expressions of my invention from among various `other forms, arrangements,
` combination, and constructions of which the invention is capable within ,the spirit and scope. of the invention.
The invention is particularly directed to those .types of portable and manually operof a can is severed and detached from the can body by clamping the end flange or seam between rollers an d cutting around the can side wall below the end iange with a rotary cutf ter; and one of the objects of the present invention resides in the provision of a mounting and arrangement of the rollers and the rotary cutter, on and with the operating levers or handles of the can opener, such that the rollers and cutter are readily movable to and from. operative position on and clamping a canend, and in which the rotary cutter with the can opener applied to and clamped on a can, is in posi ion to eliciently and positively cut the can side wall and cleanly sever the can end therefrom.

According to the embodlment of the 1nvention disclosedherewith, purely by way of example and not of limitatlon, to illustrate the principles andlfeatures of the invention, the can openerI includes the elongated, substantially flat main lever or handle having a spindle or stub shaft 11 disposed transversely therethrough, adjacent one end thereof and rotatably journalled' therein. At oneI side of lever 10, the spindle or shaftyll is formed with a head 12 extending therefrom and having a bearing flange 14 in engagement with the adjacent side face of lever 10, while at the opposite side of main lever 10, spindle or shaft 11 is extended and the advancing and clamping oppositely curved or bent to form a handle` Areadily engaged and grasped by the fingers for rotating/spindle or shaft 11, and the advancing roller mounted thereon.

Alshoulder 26 (see Figs. 4 and 5) is formed between portions 26 and27 of stud 24 and bears against the inner side of the adjacent crosshead side wall. The outer end or reduced portion 27 of stud 24i`s screw-threaded and a nut -28 and washer 29 are mounted thereon and thereover, and secure stud 24in position on and movable with the crosshead.

3.- A can opener comprising ,a handle at oneendrprovided With a rotary advancing rolle;` having an operating handle, said hani ydle having aistraightline longitudinal slot ly fixed fulcrum abutment arranged laterally of the handle a distance from said slot; in vcombination with another complementany' arranged radially with respect to the axis of said roller, said handle having a relativetioned handle and loosely confined thereto and provided with a stud confined in. said slot to straight 'line reciprocation longitudinally thereof, and a rotary clamping and cutting roller carried by said stud, saidother complementary handle `having a relatively fixed what \l/`fulcrum ortion arranged laterally some distance fro said stud to move to andabut and rock on said fulcrum abutment Whenthe tWo lhandles are pressed toward each other to pro# vide the leverage for advancing the clamping and cutting roller in-a straight line toward the advancing roller.

A can opener, comprising a pair of complementary handles loosely coupled together and carrying cooperating' rotary advancing and cutting 'rollers having hand operating rotating means, said handles also 'having rela .tively movable disconnected portionsl rigid with :their respective handles .operating abutments having re ative lateraland. separating` movements and arranged to roviding cocome together for handle nfulcruming engage- -ment when said handles are pressed'toward each other to bring said rollers into cooperative action on Jthe can, the end of one handle carrying one of said rollers, and the end of the other handle the other roller, they axis of the cutting roller being spaced laterally a distance from said abutments and having a' straight-line pathof reciprocation radiallyI of,the axis of the advancing roller.

axes and a rotating handle, and a pair of elongated handles, one of said handles having one of said rollers mounted at an end thereof, said handle also formed With arigid lateral horn land an elongatedslotpspa'ced laterally from said horn; the other handle formed with av portion slidably overlapping the slotted ,-por- `tion of the other handle andrhaving a stud .slidable in and longitudinally of said slot and carrying the, other of said rollers and also lhaving -a rigid transverse portion spaced'a distance laterally from said stud'and formed With a transverse opening loosely receiving 'said horn and providing abutmentsrelatively movable Withrespect thereto and formed to abut and fulcrum thereon.
