UNITED STATE NATHANIEL GJGBEENEgOF NEW YORK, N. X ASSIGNOR mu oonronarxon, a
m m-at: ma lay 1a,-
This invention relates generally to electrical plugs of the telephone type adapted for use in connection with radio rece ving sets or telephones to improve the quality of the 5 tone reproduction at the-loud speaker or head phones.
The invention which is the subject matter of this application is an improvement and sim lification of my companion application file simultaneously herewith, Serial No.
110,080, filed May 19, 1926.-
The improved quality of the tone reproduction is obtained by inserting a by-pass condenser across the terminals in the body 5 portion of the plug. This condenser 1mprove's both the high and low notes of the musical register audio frequency range. The condenser also by-passes the stray radio frequency currents which pass over into the audio stages of the set and also prevents the pulsating current obtained from faulty B batteries from passing through the speaker unit; thereby eliminating the crackling and other foreignnoises due to these stray urrents which are loud speaker and I and the necessary connections in a body of greatly amplified b v the cause'poor reproduction.
By inserting the condenser in the body portion of. the plug. I accomplish the results immediately which would otherwise require considerable changes to be made in a large percentage of the radio sets in use to-day as they are so enclosed and constructed to practically necessitate taking the set apart to insert the condenser in the hook-up; and if the set were accemible, the average layman would not know how to attach the condenser or where to place the same.
My improved phone plug a'lso'provides for the possibility of operating a plurality of loud speakers or sets of head phones. This provision is made by providingthe body portion of the plug with binding posts which are in contact with the condenser connections.

prevent the pulsating current from faul B batteries from speaker unit.
Another object of my invention isto provide a radio phone 'plug'with means for attachi 0 more than one loud speaker or sets ofhea phones.
Another object of my. invention is the ro- VlSlOD' of .mcans to securely hold the liead wires ofa speaker unit.v or head phone in such a way so as to prevent the same from being accidently dislodged.
Another object ofmy invention is to provide a radio phone lug having a condenser located within its ho y portion and connected across its terminals which will improve the reproduction at the loud speaker or head phones, and which will eliminate the necessity of taking the receiving set apart or dis,- mantling itto any extent to obtain the improved reproduction. v
further object of my invention is to pro-' vide a neat,-simple and inexpensive device which will be attractive in appearance, durable and not subject to excessive strain or wear, and which entirely encloses a condenser insulating material.
With these and other objects in View, to be more fully set forth hereinafter, the invention consists in the novel construction, com
bination of elements and arrangement of ation and construction herein described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
The invention will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding'parts throughout the several views, and more specifically defined and indicated in the appended claims.
Attention is directe which:

,Fig. 7 is a partial sectional side view il lustrating a modified form of my invention,
Fig. 8 is a detail view of one of the terminals used in the modified form illustrated in Fi 7. i
Iteferring'to the drawings, the body portion of my improved plug consists of the two halves 1 and 2, each an exact rephca of the other and preferably molded from a suitable insulating material suchas hard rubber, bakelite, redmanol, porcelain or any other of the common insulating materials which can be molded. The inner faces of the halves 1 and 2 have recesses or depressions 3 molded in them to form the chamber 3 said halves being securely held together by the countersunk screws 4. See Fig. 1.) Leadmg mto the depressions 3 at an angle from the edge of the halves 1 and 2 are the depressions 5forming the diverging bores .5, and forming the opening 6" and the post? are the depressions 6.
Located in suitable depressions in one end of the body halves 1 and 2 is theplug terminal assembly consisting'of the terminals 8 and 9 which are insulated from one another by the washers l0 and 11. Securely held at one end of the terminal assembly and in electrical contact with each of the terminals 8 and 9 are the spring terminals 12 and 13; said spring terminals being insulated from each other by the washer 11. The spring terminals 12 and 13 are so positioned to oppose one another and have the condenser 14.- securely fastened bctween them by means of the rivets .15. Integral with the terminals 12 and 13 are the extending contact portions 16 which are bent outward to form a spring contact with the contact buttons of the binding posts 17 when the halves 1 and 2 forming the body are fastened together, as illustrated most clearly in Figs. 4 and 5. The binding posts 17 are centrally located in suitable holes molded in the halves l and 2 and are-held in position by the threaded washers 18. The holes 19 drilled. in the binding posts are provided for the reception of a second pair of lead wires from a loud speaker or head phones, said wires being held securely by sc' rewing down-on the kunrlcd thumb-nuts Integral with the spring terminals 12 and 13 are the spring contacts 21 which exiqhd into the diverging bores 5 as illustrated Figs. 3 and 4. The ends of the spring contacts 21 are bent backwards to make a wiping rontact with the metal tips 22 on the ends of the wires 23 when they are forced home in the bores 5 illustrated in Fig. The recesses 24; are provided to allow the ends of the spring contacts to rcccde when the metal tips are forced home.
'loconncct my radidplug with a loud speaker or head phone, the wires 23 termia spring contact 16 or 16 means? nating in the metal tips 22 are passed through the opening 6 formed by the depressions (i in opposite directions to each other before insertlng the tips into the bores 5 An direct pull on the wires 23 is taken up by the past 7 and the tips, which are pulled sidewise due to the crossing of the wires; said sidewise pull causing the tops to bind in their respective bores and thereby preventing them from being. ulled out of contact accidently.
The modified form 01"- spring terminal illustrated in Fig. 6 differs from the one illustrated in the preferred form in that, instead of having a contact portion 16 for the binding posts extending from its end it has the contact portion 16? integral therewith extend; ing from its side.
The modified form of m'yzradio' lug'yas illustrated in Fl. 7 differs from t a preferred forms in t at, the binding postsfor the second set of loud speaker or headphone wires have been eliminated andthe sprin terminal 12 does not have integral therewith see Fig.8) which binding posts are is only needed when the used. i
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, 1 have described my invem tion. but I desire it understood that it. is niit confined to the particular form showniand described, the same being merely illustrati'ife, and that the invention can be carried satin other ways without departing-from the spirit of my invention, and therefore, I claim broadly the right to employ all equivalent instrumentalities coming within the scopeoi the appended claims, and by means ofwhieh objects my. invention are attained and'new results accomplished; as it is obvious that the particular embodiments herein shownand described are only some of many that canbe employed to attain these objects andacc'omjplish these results. Having now described my inventiomwhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, .39 1s:-
