H. K. LORENTZEN RECEPTACLE CLOSURE Filed April 20, 1927 Patented Jan. 1,
narrstares RECEPTAGLE CLOSURE.
Application filed April 20, 1827 Serial No. 185,089.
This invention relates V to a receptacle closure, and aims PilitlCliliil'lZ/ to nnprove the construction of hinged lids.
The invention provides a structure in which spring meansere used to bias the lid toward the rcarot the receptacle and thereby maintain an auton'iatically tight frictional contact between. the forward edges of the lid and rec/ep'tacle.
A further ature of the invention resides in uti zing these same spring means for hold-- g. .10 .li l in open position.
Additional objects a' d advantages will. appear as the description proceeds.
While a preferred embodiment of the invention has been disclosed for purposes of illustration, it should be understood that various changes maybe made in the structure without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In. the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a plan oi a box embodying the invention, parts being broken away.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation oi the box.
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the box.
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective of the lid. I
Fig. box.
Fig. (i is a section on line 6-4) of Fig. 1..
Fig. 7 is a section on line 77 of 1.
Referring to the drawings more particularly, the reference numeral 10 indicates a. box formed of metal or other suitable material having end walls 11, a front wall 12 and a rear wall 13. The upper edges of the front and end walls carry an outwardly-curved rounded bead 14.
The upper edge of the rear wall is formed at its central part with a rearwardly and downwardly extending lip 15, and with lips 16 spaced from lip 15. The lips 16 merge into the rim 1i and are longer than the lip and carry inwardly directed angular flanges 17.
The closure lid 18 is provided with a rounded overhanging flange 19 adapted to it over the bead l lpand carries at the center of its forward edge a rigid clip 20 with a locking indent 20 for engagement beneath the head 14-. At the rear side of the lid the flange 19 is extended and bent inwardly at 21, the extension being formed with laterally projecting hinge members 22.
vi lien the lid is in place on the box the hinge members extend under the lips 16 as 5 is a fragmentary perspective oi the will be clear from 1. An openin 23 is 'icrn ed through the lower rear corner of the box just below the interval between each lip 16 and the lip 15, and a flat spring 24 is lastenedto thebottom of the box and extends through the aperture '23 .to engage agains the inner face .ofextension21 (Fig. (3),.
In the structure above set forth the springs 2d at .all times press the hinge members 22 back toward the flanges 17, although when the lid is closed Fig, the engagement of the clip 20 over the forward edgeof head 14- pulls the lid to the front against the pressure of the springs and keeps hinge members 21 out of contact with the flanges 17. During opening movement of the lid the springs press the hinge members against the flanges 17 causing them to pivot in the angle formed between the lips 16 and the flanges 17. Due to these features or". construction the clip 20 is always pressed firmly back against the head 1% when the box is closed, and since rearward movement 01 the lid is limited solely by engagement between the forward edges of the box and lid, wear is automatically taken up and the lid remains firmly closed. At the same time the springs serve to hold the lid in the opened position of Fig. 6, in which position the inner side of the hinge members 22 engage the inner side of flange l6 and the part of lid flange 19 lying just above the extensions 22 engages the flange 17. (See Fig. 7.)
The inturned flanges 17 keep the hinge members 22 from working down.
Due to the arrangement and leverage oi the parts, the springs furnish only a moderately light resistance to opening and closing move ments of the lid.
1 claim 1. In combination, a box, a lid fitting Over the box, a flange extending downwardly from the rear edge of the lid, angular lips carried by the box and adapted to engage parts carried by the flange during swinging movement of the lid, a part carried by the box and engaging the flange to limit opening movement of the lid, and spring means engaging the flange and biasing it rearwardly toward the angular extensions.
2. In combination, a box, lips extending rearwardly from the rear edge of the box, said lips having inwardly directed angular extensions, a lid fitting over the box, the forward edge of the lid having a flange engaging the forward edge of the box when the lid is closed, a flange extending downwardly i from the rear edge of the lid, hinge members l projecting laterally from the flange and adapted to extend behind the angular extensions, and spring means biasing the hinge members rearwardly toward the angular extensions.
3. In combination a box, lips extending rearwardly from the rear edge of the box, said lips having inwardly directed angular extensions, a lid fitting over the box, the forward edge of the lid having a flange engaging the forward. edge of the box when the lid is closed, a flange extending downwardly from. the rear edge of the lid, hinge members projecting laterally from the flange and adapted to extend behind the angular extensions, spring means biasing the hinge members rearwardly toward the angular extensions, parts of the lid being adapted to engage the outside of the angular extensions when the lid is in open position.
l. In combination, a box, a lid fitting over the box, a flange extending downwardly from the rear edge of the lid, hinge members extending laterally from the lower edge of the flange, angular lips carried by the box and adapted to engage the hinge members, and spring means for biasing the lid to the rear to 'anse the hinge members to engage the lips.
5. In combination, a box having a rear wall, a lid fitting over the box, a flange extending downwardly from the rear edge of the lid, hinge members extending laterally from the lower edge of the flange, angular lips spaced rearwardly from the rear wall of the box and extending over the hinge members, and spring means for biasing the lid to the rear to cause the hinge members to engage the lips.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
HANS K. LORENTZEN.
