S. V. SMITH AUTOMATIC VACUUM CONTROLLED VALVE Filed June 28, 1927 Patented Dec. 1928.
UNITED stares s'co'r'rv. SMI H, on earnest-oar, ILLINOIS.
' AUTOMATIC VACUUM-CONTROLLED VALVE.
. Applieation filed June 28, 1927. Serial No. 202,111.
The present invention is directed to improvements inautomatic vacuum controlled valves.
The primary objectof theinvention is to provide a valve of this character which is placed in a line between a liquid containing reservoir or tank and the vacuum pump the constructionbeing such that should the tank or reservoir become empty the valve will automatically close to prevent air from the tank or reservoir from beingdrawn into the vacuum pump.
Another ob ect oi the inventionisto provide a valve of this character so, constructed that it will operate as soon as. the reservoir has been replenished.,.the air in theli'ne being displaced by the :liquid in order to prevent air being drawn into ing of the valve;- s v I I i In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is'a'longitudinal sectional view through the valve.
Figure 2 is a similar view of a slightly modified form of the valve. ,7
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates a casing having an inlet 2 and outletB, there being a valve seat 4 in said casing. Thisseat is provided with an annular groove 5 in which snapsthe wire ring 6 carried by the upper end of the cylindrical screen 7, the lower end of which fits around an upstanding flange 8 carried upon the bottom of the casing in order to stabilize the screen or strainer.
The upper end of the casing is formed with an integral guide sleeve 9 having a run 10,
v forms a rest for the flexible packing sheet 20, said sheet having its marginal portion clamped between the rim lO a-nd cap 12. A
' weight 21 is secured tothe packing sheet 20 by a bolt 22 and washer 23.
its periphery also clamped between the cap 12 and rim 10, the'apex thereof having an air displacement orifice 25. The cap is provided the pump upon open with a plurality of grooves 25 which lead from the interior of the dome to the annular groove 26 formed in said cap, there. being inclined vents 27 formed in'the cap which communicate with said dome. These vents serve to prevent any moisture collecting upon the upper surface to drain; and since the from enteringtherethrough. The dome 13 is preferably. hexagonal in contour in order PATENT OFFICE; i f
V vents are inclined moisture will "be prevented that a wrench may be applied thereto to rei move or replace the same. It will be obvious that when a valve 18 111 a line between a vacuum pump and liquid containing reservoir, not shown, and thepump is operating to create suction in the outlet 8 of the'casing. 1, the valve will remain seated and will in no way be affected by the vacuum; However, as
soon as liquid from-the reservoir ent-ersthe casing through the inlet 2 and passes through the screen? the valve. 14 willbe lifted from the r 1 seat 4,permitting the vacuum to draw the liquid through the seat and to its point of use. Should the liquid containing reservoir 3 or tank become empty and air be admitted to the casing instead of liquid the gravity pressure of the liquid will consequently be.
lacking and the valve 14 under its own weight will drop upon the seat 4, thus cutting oilthe air until the line has been again filled with liquid and air displaced from the line. The
inflowing liquid will then raise the valve in order that the liquid can again be drawn by suction through the line.
Any moisture which may collect in the an nular chamber 28 formed between the rim 10 and cap12 will pass through the ducts 16 into the body of the valve 14 and from thence will discharge through the ducts 17 when the valve is seated. Under certain conditions it I may be necessary to balance the valve and in Figure 2 of the drawing 1* have illustrated means for so doing. To accomplish this the casing has threaded therein a plug 29 havinga socket 30 in which is located a coil spring 31, a plug 32 being threaded in the socket and adapted to regulate the tension of the spring 31 when desired. Upon the upper terminal of the spring rests a disk 33 which engages the lower end of the stem 34, the upper end of which is. secured to or rests against the V p bottom of the valve 14. A sheet metal cone 24 is provided and has the tension of which being regulated in the same manner as the springs 31' of the preferred form of the invention. It will thus be seen that the valve 14 will be resiliently bal anced should it be desired to do so.
Ilaving thus described the invention, I claim:
1. A valve of the class described comprising a casing, a guide sleeve carried by the casing, a valve seat in the casing, a hollow valve slidable in the sleeve, said valve having upper and lower ducts in its wall communicating with the interior thereof, a cap carried by the casing and providing a chamber, the upper ducts serving to discharge moisture from the chamber into the valve while the lower duct discharges the moisture therefrom into the casing.
ing a casing having a sleeve, a valve seat alined with the sleeve, a valve slidable in-the sleeve, a cone confining the upper end of the valve when unseated, a cap engaged with the casing and having an annular groove therein,
said cone. having grooves therein communi eating with the groove of the cap, and vents in the cap leading to atmosphere and the grooves of the cone.
8. A device of the class described comprising a casing having a sleeve and valve seat 2. A valve of the class described comprisalined with said sleeve, a valve slidable in the sleeve, a weight upon the valve, a. flexible packing sheet mounted upon the valve andconfined by the weight, a cone confining 'the weight when the valve is unseated, a cap, said cap confining the cone and maintaining 5. A valve of the class described compris ing a casing, said casing having a sleeve, a
rim carried by the sleeve, a valve seat in the casing, a flexible packing sheet engaged with the upper surface of the rim, a cone engaged with the packing sheet, a cap'engaged with the rim and serving to hold the marginal portions ofthe packing sheet and cone engaged with the rim and aweight engaged upon the packing sheet and confined by the cone. I
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
