- CLIP FOR PENCILS AND THE L IKE.
Application filed May 28,
This invention relates to a clip adapted to be secured to a pencil or similar article havin g a hollow barrel portion, in order that the same may be readily attached to a persons pocket.
The object of the invent-ion is to provide a clip of simple construction, which is easily applied to the article to be held, and which, when thus applied, cannot readily become separated therefrom. The clip is especially adapted to be attached to a barrel having an open end, said clip being formed with opposed portions which automatically grip or become locked to the inner and outer surfaces of the barrel as soon as the clip is applied.
The specific construction of the clip in its preferred form, and the manner in which it is applied, will be more particularly explained in connection with the accompanying drawings illustrating the same in connection with the barrel of a pencil.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the clip as applied to the barrel of the pencil.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
As illustrated in the drawings, the numeral 5 indicates the barrel of a pencil, which is cylindrical in shape and has an open end to which the clip 6 is applied. The clip 6 made from metal which is spring tempered and is formed with opposed legs 7 and 8 which are adapted to grip the. inner and outer surfaces of the barrel wall to which the clip is applied. A spur 9 is struck from the inner leg 7 so that it is normally inclined rearward ly and toward the wall of the barrel. The material of which the barrel is composedis soft enough so that the spur 9 will bite into it and tend to prevent the removal of the clip therefrom. It is, however, advisable to provide a recess 10 havinga shoulder 11 behind which the spur snaps into locking engagement as the clip is forced into the position shown in Fig. 1. If desired, the inner face of the barrel wall may be scored to receive the leg 7, so that its surface is flush with the inner surface of the barrel. The leg 8 is provided with a curved extension 12 adapted to engage the edge of a persons pocket in the usual'manner.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the clip 6 is of simple construction and may be easily attached to the wall of the barrel by forcing the legs 7 and 8 to straddle 1923. Serial No; 281,081.
the same. The clip, as soon as it is forced into position, becomes automatically locked in such position. In using the barrel 5 for pencils, a bushing is usually inserted in the upper end of the barrel to receive the. feed memher, but such bushing is not essential to the proper functioning of the clip. It will also be apparent that the clip is equally Well adapted for use in other relations, wherever a similar hollow barrel member is used. The shape and the details of construction ofthe clip may also be varied considerably, Without departing materially from the scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim is:
1. The combination with a hollow barrel member, open at one end, of a clip at said open end having legs bearing against the inner and outer surface of the barrel, one of said legs having a spur, said spur being inclined toward the end of the barrel. and toward the Wall thereof to permit the clip to be easily applied to the barrel and to prevent its removal therefrom.
2. The combination with a hollow barrel member, open at one end, of a clip at said open end having legs bearing against the inner and outer surfaces of the barrel, means on the barrel and one of said legs and automatically coengageable, as the clip is applied to the barrel, to prevent the withdrawal of the clip from the barrel, and an extension on the outer leg for engaging a pocket v 3. The combination with a hollow barrel member, open at one end, of a clip at said open end having legs straddling the wall of the barrel, spring snap means for positively retaining the clip on the barrel, and an extension on the outer leg of the clip for engaging a, pocket.
4. The combination with a hollow barrel member, open at one end, of a clip having legs adapted to extend from the rim of the open end in contact respectively with the inner and outer surfaces of the barrel, said barrel having a depression in its inner surface, and a resilient spur on the inner leg arranged to spring into interlocking engagement with the edge of said depression as the clip is attached to the barrel. 7
5. The combination with a hollowbarrel member, open at one end, of a clip having legs adapted to straddle the wall of the. barrel, and a spur struck from one ofthe legs so wall having a depression to receive said spur, with the edge of the depression forming a shoulder against which the end of the spur e11- gages to prevent the removal of the clip from the barrel.
In testimony whereof, signed my name to this specification.
GERALD L. BASSR'IQI.
