SPRING SUPPORT FOR CHAIRS, COUCHES, AND lTHE LIKE. i
Application led March 31, 1926, Serial No. 98,894, and in Great Britain May 25, 1925.
This invention relates to spring supports for chairs, couches, omnibuses and other vehicle seats and the like and it has for its object to obviate the usual upholstery or internal seat springs.
The present invention consists broadly of a chair, couch or the like composed of two frames, one frame carrying the seat and being mounted upon springs interposed botween the two frames whereby the upper frame is free to move in a resilient manner relatively to the other or under-frame.
The preferred spring support according to the present invention consists of or comprises a plurality of conical coiled compression springs arranged so as to constitute the sole supporting means for the upper or seat frame;
In the preferred arrangement the springs are arranged intandem fashion in two sets oneach side of the chair or the like., the rear set consisting of two or more springs and the front set consisting of One or more springs of heavier gauge material or otherwise rendered stiffer than the springs of the rear'set.
IVhile conical coiled springs as the support for the upper frame of the article such frame` is permitted to give in all directions under the weight of the user whilst completely or almost completely obviating any tendency for the upper frame and consequently the seat to roll owing to the lateral stability imparted by springs of this type.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood two embodiments of the same will now be described by aid of the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a. fragmentary erspective view of an armchair embodying t 1e improvements according to the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through the same.
Fig. 3 is a. plan view.
Fig. 4 is an elevation of the detachable and ad'ustable back.
1ig. 5 is a fragmentary longitudinal vertical section through a chair having springs of the leaf or laminated type.
The chair illustrated com rises a. rectangular frame a supported on egs b and form-V ing the base for the chair, such frame being hereafter referred to as the base frame. The portion c hereafter referred to generallyV as the body of the chair, is supported, in the example illustrated in Figs. l to 4, upon slx conical coiled springs, three of which d, e and f are shown in the drawings.v These springs are arranged tandem fashion on oir posite sides of the chair with ltheir largest diameter adjacent to the underside of the body of the chair c.
In the preferred arrangement which is illustratedl the springs are arranged in two sets, therea-r set consisting of the springs d and e and the front set of the spring f. The front springs f are composed vof heavier gauge material vor otherwise rendered stiffer than the springs (l and e. i
To render the springs normally invisible v the body of the chair is provided all round with a depending' skirt g.
In the example illustrated in Fig. 5 lami-Y nated springs l1, are used in lieu of the conical coiled springs d and e f of the irst described example. f
Alternativel)7 ordinary used.
The conical coiled springs are however preferred as they give in all directions under the weight of the user of the chair whilst co pletely or almost completely obviating any tendency for the body of the chair to roll owing to the lateral stability imparted by springs of this type.
A chair having a spring support accord# ing to this invention does not require any upholstery springs and the seat proper may be composed of a strip of material stretched between the back and front transverse members of the seat frame. y
lVhat I claim and desire to secure ters Patent is A chair comprising an integral understructure including side'rails and end rails, an inte-gral overstructure including seat and back, a. set of conical coil springs arranged tandem fashion on each side rail 0f said under-structure vwith their smallerends rest ing on said side rail and their larger ends supporting said over-structure,A the springs supporting the front end of said over-structure being less in number but of `heavier gauge than those supporting the rear end of said over-structure and the several springs of the two sets constituting the sole means for limiting relative movement between said two structures in a horizontal'sense in all die rections.
In witness whereof I aiiix my signature.
