I My invention relates to improvements in v hat renovating machines wherein steaming v and pressing elements are provided for the brim portions of a hat, and the objects are,
first, to provide animproved hat renovating machine having simple and effectivemeans for steaming and pressing the brim of the hat; second, to p'rovidean improved device of the character described having means for altering the shape of the hat brim; third, to provide improved means for pressing the both sides of a hat brimwhile said lorim'is being steamed; fourth, to provide improved means for dry pressing the both sides or a hat brim. the pipe 28 com1ects-between the chamber 17* and the said pipe 6, with the pipe 37 leading from the bottom level thereof to a drain connection not shown, and the valve 38 is in turn positioned in the said pipe 37 The valves '39 are secured in the bodies 1 and 2 in communication With the chambers 17 and 17. p I p When it is desired to operate the hat renovator the live steam is admitted through the t'hesaid hub22 bythe swivel joint 9, the said u open valve from the pipe 5 into the pipes 5" and 5, and the said live steam is thence admitted from the pipe 5 and 5 into the pipes 2729, and the pipes 24-26, respectively, and the said live steam may thence be admitted into any of the chambers 17 17 19, or 19 as desired, by opening or closing the valves 11", 8, 12 or 7 respectively, and the exhaust steam is in turn allowed to escape through the holes 20 and 21 from the saidchambers 19 and 19 respectively, or to escape through the pipes 25 and 28 fromthe said chambers 17 and 17 respectively and exhaust into the pipe 6, and the accumulation of water, or air, being trapped in the lower levels of the pipes 27, 29, 28, 21,
or 20, by the condensation of the said steam are in turn drained through the pipes 32, 34:, 37 and 30 by opening the valves 35, 34c, 38 and 33, respectively.
The front and rear portions of the hat 36 to be renovated are placed between the bodies 1 and 2 as shown in Figure 4, in
, successive order, and the live steam is turned into the chambers 19 and 19 as desired to prepare the hat 36 for the dry pressing operation, after the hat 36 has been steamed, the
steam is cut off by the valves 12 and 29 respectively, and the dry pressing operation is performed by the live steam contained within the chambers 17 and 17 adjacent to the said chambers 19 and 19, by manually pressing the plate 1 down upon the plate 2, by the handle 3. It is important to note that the bodies 1 and 2 are designed to receive a hat presented only endwise therebetween and to embracea portion of the hat brim greater than one-half thereof so that a reversal of the hat insures pressing of the entire brim and in a manner to eliminate any line between pressed portions or any unpressed port-ions.
It will also be seen that should it be desired to press only the top face of the said hat 36 the steaming operation is employed, as hereinbefore described, through the chamber 19 and holes 20 respectively, and the press ing operation is then followed by discontinuing the steaming operation and enflfloying the dry pressing operation, as hereinbefore described, by charging the chamber 17 with steam to heat the body 1, thus when the bodies 1 and 2 are pressed together with the front, or rear, portion of the hat 36 therebetween; and, should it be desired to press only the bottom face of the same hat 36 the said steaming operation is employed through the chamber 19 and holes 21 respectively, in a similar manner as when pressing the top face of the hat 36, and is in turn followed by the pressing operation by charging the chamber 17" with steam to heat the body 2, and thus the front, or rear, portion of the said hat36 maybe pressed on the bottom face thereof, by controlling the steam passages and valves hereinbefore described.
Having thus described'my invention what I claim is:
i 1. A hat renovating machine comprising superposed complemental steaming and pressing members shiftably mounted to occupy a renovating and a non-renovating position, each of the members having an arcuateportion designed to embrace approximately one-half of a hatbrim, each member having substantially straight extensions beyond the ends of its arcuate portion, the extensions being substantially parallel, the extensions and the arcuate portion being adapted to receive a hat presented endwise therebetween and together embracing a portion of thehatbrim greater than one-half thereof. i a
