WILLIAM A. MATHESON, OF` CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR 'IO R'O'LL-A-"WAY BED CORPORATION, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
HINGE.
Application filed May 11,
My invention belongs to that general class of devices known ashinges, and relates particularly' to a device for connecting cooperating parts together, whereby the same have a desired relativepivotal movement. The device has particularly as ai'i object a hinged construction especially adapted for use on beds or the like, which maybe folded or closed so as to reduce the size of the same when not in use, but the device, however, may be employed wherever found applicable.
The invention has among its objects the production of a device of the kind described that is simple, convenient, durable, reliable, efficient and satisfactory for use wherever found applicable. It has particularly as an object the production of a hinged construction of the kind described which will not only serve to rigidly secure parts of the bed together but will also pivotally or adjustably secure the legs thereto. The preferred construction is also adapted to limit the movement of the legs when they are moved to operative or folded positions.
Many other objects and advantages of the construction herein shown and described will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the disclosures herein given.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement `and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims. i
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts:
Fig. 1 is a sectional view illustratingmy improved hinge as applied to a bed construction. f y
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken substantiali ly on line 4 4 of Fig. 1, thehinge and leg moved to folded positions. v
Referring to the drawings, my preferred type of hinge consists of two cooperating members, 1 and 4, which are suitably secured together and arranged foi-attachment to the parts to be hinged or connected together. The member 1 comprises a plate provided with flanges 2, which flanges are extended and `bent over at one endas at 3 so as to overlap 1923. Serial No. 638,179.
gether lby `a rivet or; bolt 7 or equivalent means, a spacer 8 being preferably employed as shown.
As before mentioned, my improved hinge is particularly adapted for bed constructions, and I have therefore shown the same as applied to a bed for securing several parts together, but in view of the fact that the preferred type of bed forms no part of the present invention, I have not considered it necessary to lillustrate the complete bed herein. My device is adapted for use on any type of bed where folding' A.legs are employed.
In the construction which I have shown, 9 represents one of the side frame bars or rails, which is of angle iron'construotion, and including the flange 10,.the bar being secured to hinge part 1 by rivets 11 or their equivalents. Secured to the part 4 is a leg 13, this being secured in place by a rivet or boit 14 or equivalent mea-ns for the purpose. There is also shown a bed frame or rail portion post 12, which vis secured to the portions 3 by a bolt 15. It will be noted that the por- 'l tions 3 as shown are formed with a slot 16 so that the post 12 may be secured m place so `that it abuts and closely lits the end of the leg portion 13 and substantially forms a contin- ,uation thereof. The flanges 3 and plate 4 are arranged to conform to or lit the portions 12 or 13, their particular design depending `upon the ldesign of parts 12 'and 13 which in the present instance are shown as cylindris,
bed is carried on the leg 13, being transmitted through the hinge parts rather than through the portion 12 alone. It will be noted that When the leg is folded as indicated in the dotted lines in Fig. 1, or in full lines in F ig. 4, one. of the langes 5 Will abut on the flange 10 of the rail as indicated at 17, thereby limiting the closing movement oi the leg and maintaining the same in the desired relation with t-he rail or bar 9. The parts may be so designed that the movement ot the leg may be as preferred. The present construction is adapted not only to pivotally secure the leg 13 to the bar, but also the trame or post portion 12 to the bar or frame ot the bed, and likewise maintain parts 12 and 13 in the desired relat-ion.
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various in'iniaterial modifications may be made in the same Without departing from the spirit ot my invention; hence I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myseii to the enact form, construction, arrangement and combination ot parts herein shown and described or uses mentioned.
