Description
W. D. MILLER.
RECOIL-CHECK FOR GUN-STOCKS.
No.169,465. Patented Nov. 2,1875.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM D. MILLER, OF PIT TSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN RECOlL-CHECKS FOR'GUN-STOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 169.465, dated November 2, 1875; application filed October 2, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM DEEDS MILL- ER, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Recoil Check for Gun- Stoeks, of which the following is a specification:
The accompanying drawing represents a vertical central section oi a gun-stock with my improved recoil-check attached.
The object of my invention is to provide the butt-ends of gun-stocks with a device for diminishing or neutralizing the recoil of guns or other fire-arms; and the invention consists of afixed butt-plate, in connection with a hinged, guided, and spring-acted plate, attached to the butt-end of the stock of a gun or other firearm.
In the drawing, A'represents the stock of a gun; I3, the fixed butt-plate, which is suitably screwed thereto. The hinged check-plate 0 is applied to the lower part of the butt-plate, and guided at its upper end by a forwardcurved part, a, in a corresponding recess, a, of the stock. The check'plate G is provided with a curved and threaded center-pin, D, that is securely attached thereto, and extended through a perforation of the butt-plate into a recess or hole, 12, of the stock. A nut, d, on the center-pin, at the inside of the recess 1), regulates the extent of swing of the checkplate. A screw-nut, e, at the bottom of the center-pin hole 1), serves to regulate the tension of the spiral spring f, that is interposed between the bottom nut c and the nutd of the center-pin D.
The cheek-plate and spring break the recoil of the gun in most cases, and diminishes the force of the recoil when heavier charges are used, so as to dispense with the annoyance caused by the recoiling, and give a better aim and a greater force to the gun with the same charge as when the ordinary plate is used therewith.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A recoil-check for fire-arms, made of a fixed butt-plate, and a hinged, guided, and spring-acted check-plate applied to the end of the gun-stock, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a recoil-check for gun-stocks, the combination of the solid block B with the swinging plate 0, curved rod D, spring f, and setscrew 6, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
WILLIAM DEEDS MILLER.
