The present invent-ion will be illustrated and described in connection with the type of dump car known as a selective car. This type of car permits the selective dumping of lading between the tracks upon which the car is mounted or outside of said tracks. It will be understood, however, as the descrip tion proceeds that many features of the present invention are'applicable to other types of car, the features of sturdiness and ready applicability and removability being of more general application than to selective cars.
An object of the present invention is to provide a dump car construction which,
while retaining all the advantages of convenient operation of certain cars as now known and used, provides improved sturdiness and improved convenience in building and in repairing.
A further object is to provide dump car construction in which'the various parts are so arranged that they may be secured together to form a construction having improved sturdiness over prior constructions.
Further objects will appear as the description proceeds.

The numeral 1 indicates a railway dump car of the selective type. Said; car is provided with the side walls 2-2 and the end wall 3. Trucks are provided at each end of the car, which trucks are indicated diagrammatically by the wheels 4-4:. Mounted between the trucks is certain dumping mechanism indicated by the numeral 5. Part of the dump doors is shown broken away in Figure 1 in order to illustrate certain mechanism which is shown on larger scale in the other figures'of the drawing.
Mounted adjacent to the two sidewalls 2-2 of the car are the inwardly sloping walls 6-6. Extending longitudinally of the car are the center sills 7-7, each of which may consist of a structure having a channel portion 7 and an extra outwardly extending flange 7". Suitable means are provided for connecting the center sills 7-7 together. Each of the dump doors 11-11 comprisesa closure member or supplementary door 13 and an extension member 14, said closure member 13 being pivoted to the extension member "14 about axis 15. A longitudinally extending rod 16 operates certain links or other mecha nism to control the two dump doors 11--11,
having operative connection with said dump doors at points adjacent to the extremities of the extension members l t-14. The details of the construction for supporting the shaft 16 and the details of the link mechanism for operating said doors will be de scribed hereinafter. It will be sufficient to state at this point in the description that operat-ion of the shaft 16 will control swinging movements of the doors 1111 about the pivots 12-12, whereby material in the car may be dumped between the tracks upon which the car is operated. Each of the dump doors 11-11 is rovided with a strengthenin 'rib 17 extending in a plane transversely of the car. Said rib 17 may have a cross sectional d contour of an inverted truncated V and is mounted to have a swinging movement about the corresponding axis 12. The sloping walls 66 are provided at their lower extremities with Z-bars 18--18, which have cut away portions conforming to the contour of the corresponding ribs 17. Each of the sloping floors 9-9 has at its lower extremity a reinforcing angle 19, said angle and floor being cut away to receive said rib 17. The structure described rovides a very sturdy construction. The s oping walls 9-9 with their notches for receiving the wedge-shaped strengthening rib 17 insure a very rigid construction. The fact that the wedge-shaped strengthening ribs 17-17 fit within corre- 'sponding notches in the Z-bars 18-48 also adds to the rigidity of the structure. Inasmuch as the dump'doors 1111 are located below the cross bearers 1010,. said doors may be of considerable length longitudinally of the car. By reason of the extended doors. the danger is minimized that the escape of lading between spaced doors longitudinally.

As indicated above, each of-the closure members 13-13 may have a pivotal movement about a corresponding axis 15, by which movement side dumping outwardly maybe accomplished. Each of said closures 13 is controlled for side dumping by a chain or other flexible member 20, which may be connected to the closure 13 by means of the eye bolt 21 (Figure 8). The other end of each of said chains is connected to a longitudinally extending shaft 22, which shafts may be operated by any preferred means. The pitch line of the chain 20 should pass through the axis 12 of the corresponding dump door 11. By reason of this construction, swinging of the dump doors 11-11 for center dumping does not changethe relation of the closure 13 to the remainder of the dump door. This advantage follows as a result of the fact that, regardless of the swinging of a dump door 11 as a whole about the corresponding axis 12, there is no change in the holding effect of chain 20, inasmuch as said chain merely swings with the remainder of the door about the axis 12. r
Link mechanism for operating the dump tion 25 whose axis is coincident with the axis of rotation of the shaft 16. Mounted within the center sills 77 is the shaft supporting member 26 which comprises a loop, said loop being supported from the lower inner flanges of said center sills 77. Said shaft support 26 has a U-shaped conformation, preferably slightly greater in dimension at its upper portion than at its lower portion, for thepurpose of facilitating the insertion of the crank member 23. Located at the two extremities of the cylindrical portion 25 are the crank arms 27 and 28, which are provided with the flanges 29 and 30 respectively. Saidflanges 29 and 30 should be cut away in line with the arms 27 and 28 in order that said flanges may not interfere with the insertion of either of the crank arms 27 or 28 through the shaft support 26. By this construction the crank member 23 may be mounted from either side of the shaft support 26 after said shaft support has been riveted in place. r I
The crank arm 27 is connected to the left hand door 11 (Figure 3) through a series of links, and the crank arm 28 is connected to the right hand dump door 11 through a second series of links. The links referred to need not be described herein, inasmuch as they form no part of the present invention. It will be suflicient to state that rotation of the shaft 16 in one direction will result in the opening of the dump doors 11 for center dumping, and rotation in the opposite direction will result in the closing of said doors.
Figures 1, 5, 6 and 7 indicate the structure by means of which movement may be communicated to the shaft 16 for opening and closing the doors 11, as above mentioned. The numeral 31 indicates a shaft, which for convenience of manufacture may be square in cross section. Said shaft, as indicated in Figure 1, may be operatedby means of a lever 32, which lever may have a ratchet action if preferred; The transversely extending shaft lot;
31 extends through the webs of the center sills 77, holes 33-'33 being provided for that purpose (Figure 5). It is necessary, of course, to provide round journals for the turning movement of the shaft 31, and in order to provide such journals, bushings 34are mounted upon shaft 31, said bushings 34 being provided with square apertures for reception of the square shaft 31. A worm 35 is mounted on the shaft 31 between the bushings 34. A casting 38 forming a supporting means for the journals of shafts 16 and 31 may be riveted to the lower outside flanges of the sills 7-7, the inside flanges of said sills being cut away, as indicated by the numerals 3939 to permit the insertion of the upper portion of casting 38 between the webs of the sills 77. provided between said upper portion of casting 38 and the sills 7-7 in order to avoid the necessity of planing or machining the cut portions. As indicated in Figure 6, the lower portion of the casting 38 may be bifurcated, the two legs thereof being indicated by the numerals 4141. Thus it will be seen that this casting in side elevation has the general form of an inverted V. The casting 38 is provided. with upwardly extending flanges 41, through which the casting is riveted to the inner sides of the center sills 77, said rivets passing through the filler plates 40. At an intermediate point the legs are provided with horizontal flanges 42 through which the castings are riveted to the lower flanges of the center sill. These horizontal flanges 42 are so located that when the casting is secured to the lower flanges of the center sill the parts will be in proper position for the reception of the operating mechanism.
It will further be noted that the bearings for the shaft 31 are formed substantially at the apex of the inverted V casting, while the bearings for the shaft 16 are formed transversely thereto'nea-r the extremities of the legs. Said legs 4141 may be provided with bearing portions 4242, which are cylindrically apertured for receiving the bushings 4343. Each of said bushings 43 may be shouldered at one end, as indicated by the numeral 44, which shouldered portion may abut against the sides of a worm wheel 45, which worm wheel 45 is adapted to mesh with the worm 35. The bushings 4343 may have an axial aperture of square cross sectionfor reception of the square shaft 16. Cotter pins 45-45 may be provided for preventing relative axial movement between theshaft 16 and casting 38, bushings43-43 and worm wheel 45. lt will be noted that the bottom flanges of the sills 77 serve as ledges to locatethe casting 38. Moreover, by reason of the riveted relation between sills 7 7 and casting 38, the sills are reinforced against Filler plates 40 are volving a shaft for operating link mechanism for opening and closing dump doors such as the dump doors 1l11, trouble has been eX-' large leverage, to turn the shaft in the wrong direction, which action often has destructive results on the mechanism of the car. The present invention contemplates means whereby such destructive results are rendered impossible. The worm wheel is provided with a pair of abutments 46-46 on the side faces thereof ofl' set from the axis of said worm wheel, which abutments may be conveniently provided. by a pin inserted through the Worm wheel 45 and extending laterally from the two side faces thereof. Located in cooperative relationship with the abutment-s 46-46 of the worm wheel 45 are the shoulders 41-47, which extend inwardly from the two legs 4141 of the shaft support 38. The shaft 16 in common constructions will require something less than a complete revolution in turning from full closed to full open position, or from full open position to closed position. For this reason the abutment-s 46 46 and shoulders 4T 47 may be so designed as to limit the extent of rotation of the worm wheel 45 to the amount required for the open ing and closing movements of the dump doors. If a workman should attempt to turn the operating shaft 31 in the wrong directioneither for opening. or closing movement, such movement would be prevented by reason of and shoulders 4747, so that destructive forces cannot be applied in any such manner to the link mechanism for operating the doors 1111.
- Referring now to Figures 8, 9, 10 and 11, the details of the construction providing mounting and operating means for the dump doors will be described.
Front an inspection of Figure 8 it will be noted that the sloping floor 6 is provided with a vertically disposed portion 48 riveted to the side wallQ of the car. A plurality of stakes 49 are provided, and adjacent to one or more of said stakes on each side of the car is a bracing member 50, which may be termed a combined stake brace and shaft and hinge support. at oneof its ends to the lower end of the corresponding stake 4 9 and at its other end is riveted to the Z-bar 18 and the lower portion of the corresponding sloping wall 6. At its upper side said support 50 is riveted to the adjacent cross bearer 10. Also riveted to the support 50, Z-bar 18 and sloping wall 51 is riveted at a plurality of points to the sloplng wall 6 and has avhooked over portion 52 which'engages and is riveted to the web the engagement between abutments 4646 Said support 50 is riveted portion of the Z-bar 18, whereby to form a very rigid construction. The support for receiving the pivotal support 0 the corresponding dump door 11, whichmay be disposed between the legs of the member 50.
It will be noted that the present invention provides a dump car of sturdy construction, which may be assembled with a maximum of convenience and which provides a maximum of assurance against destruction by improper operation.
Though a preferred embodiment of the present invention has been described in detail, many modifications will occur to those skilled in the art. It is intended to" cover all such modifications that fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is 1 1. A dump, car having a longitudinally extending operating shaft, dump doors controlled by said shaft, a crank member carried by said shaft, said crank member having a cylindrical journal portion, sills, a
loop member depending from said sills and carrying said crank member, said crank member having cranks and flanges at its two ends, the crank and flange at each end preventing endwise movement of said crank member relative to said loop when said crank member is inoperative position, said crank member having dimensions at each of its ends permitting insertion of said crank member into said loop member from either side of said loop member. a
2. A dump car comprising center sills, a loop member depending from said sills, a crank member having a cylindrical bearing portion and cranks and flanges at .the two ends of said crank member adjacent to said cylindrical portion, said flanges and cranks being disposed to prevent endwise movement of said crank member relative to said loop member under normal operation, said crank I portion, and cranks and member having dimensions at one of its ends to permit insertion of said crank member into said loop from the side of said loop.
8. A. dump car comprising center sills, a loop member depending from said sills, a crank member having a cylindrical bearing anges at the two ends of said crank member adjacent to said cylindrical portion, said flanges and cranks being disposed to prevent endwise movement of said crank member relative to said loop member under. normal operation, said crank member having dimensions at both of its ends to permit insertion of said crankmemher into said loop from either side of said loop. 4. A railway dump car, comprisinga pair of center sills, a shaft extending through said sills transversely thereof, a worm. carried by said shaft, asupporting member supported by said sills, a second shaft carried by saidsupporting member in a plane at right angles to said first mentioned shaft and a power transmitting member on said second shaft intermeshing with said worm, said supporting member having bearing means for each of said shafts.
5. A railway dump car, comprising center sills, said sills being juxtaposed and being flanged at their bottom portions, a shaft extending through said sills transversely there of, a worm non-rotatably mounted upon said shaft, a second shaft square in cross Section lying in aplane at right angles 'to said first mentioned shaft, bushings mounted upon said second shaft, said bushings providing journal members, and a supporting'member carried by said sills providing bearing means for said bushings. 6. A railway dump car, comprising center sills, a shaft extending through said sills transversely thereof, a worm non-rotatablv mounted upon said shaft, a second shaft square in outline lying in a plane at right angles to said first mentioned shaft, busl'iings mounted upon said second shaft, said bushings providing journal members, and a supporting member carried by said sills, said supporting member providing bearing means for said first mentioned shaft and providing bearing members for said bushings.
7 A railway dump car comprising spaced center sills, supporting means carried by said sills, said supporting means having a portion disposed between said sills, said supporting means. comprising. two sets of bearing portions, a shaft carrying a worm and being mounted in one of said sets of bearing portions, said worm being located between sald sills, and a shaftcarrying a worm wheel and loo mounted in the other of said sets of bearing portions. 8. A railway dump car, comprising center sills, supporting means carried by said sills, a pair of shafts located in planes substantially at right angles torone another, one of -Wl1l0l1 shafts passes through said sills, a
worm on said last mentioned shaft, said supporting member being provided with two sets of bearin portions, bushings on the other of said shafts providing journals, said journals being rot-atably mounted within one set of said bearing portions, the other 7 set of said bearingportions providing bearings for the shaft passing through said center sills.
9. In combination, in a railway dump car, a pair of dump doors, mechanism for operating said doors, said mechanism including a supporting means carrying longitudinal and transverse bearings, a rotatable shaft having a worm thereon, carried by said transverse bearing, a worm wheel cooperating with said worm, journal means for said worm wheel,
said worm wheel and journal means being provided with cooperating stops to take the force applied to said shaft if said shaft is turned in the wrong direction.
10. In. a railway dump car, in combination,
center sills, door operating shaft means, a suppower transmitting member in an improper direction.
11. In a rallway dump car, in combination,
center sills, door operating shaft means, a,
supporting member carrying longitudinal and transverse bearings for rotatably supporting said shaft means, a power transmitting member carried by said shaft means, said power transmitting member having a normal range of movement of less than one revolution, and cooperating means upon said supporting member and upon said power transmitting member fortaking the force if an attempt should bemade to turn .said power transmitting member beyond a proper limit of its movement. I
12. In combination, in a railway dumpcar, a pair of dump doors,link mechanism for controlling the opening and closing move ments of said doors, a shaft for moving said links, a power transmitting member for turning said shaft, relatively stationary mounting means for said shaft carrying longitudinal and transversebearings, and 00- operating abutment means. for limitingthe range of movement of said power transmitting member relative to said relatively stationary supporting means. j V i 13. In combination, in a railwaydump car, a pair of dump doors, link mechanism for controlling the opening and closing movements of said doors, a shaft for moving said links, and a powertransmitting member for turning said shaft, mounting means for said power transmitting member carrying longi tudinal and transverse bearings, said power transmitting member having a range, of movement of less than a complete revolution,
said power transmitting member and said mounting means having cooperating abutment members for taking the force applied to said power transmitting member if an attempt is made to force same beyond the normal limits of its travel.
14. A railway dump car, comprising spaced center sills, a casting provided with longitudinal and transverse bearings mounted between said center sills and supported thereby, a transversely extending operating shaft and a longitudinally extending operating shaft, a worm and a worm wheel mounted upon said shafts for communicating movement from one ofsaid shaftsto the other of said shafts.
15. A railway dump car comprising side walls,sloping bottom walls, swinging dump doors pivotally mounted adjacent to said sloping bottom, walls, said dump doors having intermediate closures having their swinging edges adjacent to said sloping bottom walls, operating mechanism for said intermediate closures, brace members for said sloping bottom walls, said brace members forming supports for the pivotal mountings of said dump doors and forming supportsfor the operating mechanism for said intermediate closures. In a railway dump car, in combination, a side wall, a stake therefor, a sloping bottom wall adjacent to said side-wall, a swinging dumpdoor pivotally mounted adjacent to saidsloping bottomwall, said dump door having an intermediate closure having a swing ing edge normally located adjacent to said sloping bottom wall, operatingmechanism for said intermediate closure, a brace member riveted to said stake andito said sloping bottom wall, said brace member providing a support for the pivotal mounting of said dump door, and a support for nism of said closure. g
17. A railway dump car comprising a side wall, a sloping, fixed bottom wall, a dumping bottom wall cooperating with said sloping bottom wall, a reinforcing Z-bar for reinforcing the bottom edge of said sloping bottom Wall, astrengthening member overlying said sloping bottom wall and riveted thereto,
said strengthening member having a hooked over portion engaging with and secured to the web of said Z-bar.
18. A railway dump car, comprising a side wall, a sloping bottom wall, a stake for strengthening said side wall, a brace, a Z- bar at the bottom edge of said sloping bottom wall, and a strengthening member overlying said sloping bottom wall, said side wall, stake, brace, Z-bar, a slopingbottom wall and strengthening member being riveted together, said strengthening member having a hooked over portion engaging with and riveted to the web portion of said Z-bar.
19. Arailway dumpcar comprising a side wall, a sloping,fiXed bottom wall; a dumping bottom wall cooperating with said sloping bottom wall, a reinforcing bar of angular cross" section for strengthening the bottom edge of said sloping bottom wall, a strengthening member overlying said sloping bottom wall and riveted'thereto, said strengthening memberihaving a hooked over portion engaging with andse'cured to a portion of said bar. A railway dump car comprising a side wall, a sloping bottom wall, a stake for strengthening said side wall, a bar of angular the operating mechacross section at the bottom edge of said sloping bottom wall, and a strengthening member overlying said sloping bottom wall, said side wall, stake, bar, a sloping bottom wall and strengthening member being riveted to gether, said strengthening member having a hooked overportion engaging with said bar. 21. A railway dump car, comprising center sills, a pair of shafts extending in planes substantially at right angles to one another, supporting means carried by'said sills, said sup porting means providing a pair of depending legs, a worm on one of said shafts located between said sills and a worm wheel on the other of said shafts, said Worm wheel being mounted between said depending legs, said supporting means having bearing means for each of said shafts. j

second square shaft lying in a plane at right angles to said first mentioned shaft, bushings mounted upon said second shaft, said bushings providing journal members, and a oasting located between said sills. said casting providing means for limiting axial movement of said worm and providing bearing members for said bushings, said casting being supported from said sills.

A railway dumpear comprising cen' ter sills, a casting carried by said center sills, said casting being provided with two sets of bearing members, a shaft carrying a worm and having ournal portions mounted in one of said sets of bearing portions, and a shaft carrying a worm wheel and also provided with journal members mounted in the other of said sets of bearing members, said casting having a portion abutting against the under side of said sills and secured to said sills.
29. A railway dump car comprising center sills, a casting located between said sills and supported by said sills, a pair of square shaft-s, one of which passes through said sills, said one square shaft being provided with a worm and journal members, saidcasting being provided with bearing portions for said journal members, bushings on theother of said shafts providing journals, said journals being rotatably mounted within said casting, and a worm wheel upon said second shaft meshing with said worm.
. 30.In a railway dump car, in combination, center sills, door operating shaftmeans, a casting carrying longitudinal and transverse bearings forjrotatably supporting said shaft means, said casting being supported from said sills, a power transmitting member carried by said shaft means, and cooperating abutmentscarried by said casting and said power transmitting member for limiting movement of said power transmitting memher in an improper direction.
31. In a railway dump car, in combination, center sills, door operating shaft means comprising two shafts at right angles to one another, a casting for rotatably supporting said shaft means, apower transmitting member carried by said shaft means, said power transmitting member having a normal range of movement of less than one revolution, and cooperating abutment means on said casting and said power transmitting member for taking the force if an attempt should be made to turn said power transmitting member beyond the proper limit of its movement.
32-. A I'ailway dump oar comprising center sills, a transversely extending operatingshaft and a longitudinally extending operating shaft, a worm and worm wheel mounted upon said shafts for communicating movement from one of said shafts to the other of said shafts, a casting mounted between said sills and secured thereto, said casting having the function of preventing said sills from spreading, said casting also providing supporting members for said worm and worm wheel.
33. A railway dump car comprising center sills havingtheir web portions parallel with one another, a shaft extending through said sills transversely thereof, a casting located between said sills and riveted thereto, and a second shaft supported by said casting, said casting being provided with bearing members for bot-h of said shafts.
34. A railway dump car comprising, in
combination, a sloping bottom wall having a shedding edge remote from the lower chord of the side of said car and a brace member for said bottom wall, said brace member comprising an angle bar having its end bent over to form a hook disposed over the shedding edge of said bottom wall.

A railway dump car comprising, in combination, a side wall, a sloping bottom wall adjacent thereto, a stake mounted adjanected to said side wall, said stake and said sloping bottom Wall, dump doors, an operat ing shaft for one of said doors and a hinge for the other of said doors, said member being formed to provide a support for said hinge anda bearing for said operating shaft.
36. A railway dump car, comprising center sills, a shaft extending through said sills transversely thereof, a worm non-rotatably mounted upon said shaft, a. second shaft lying in a plane at right angles tosaid first mentioned shaft, and a supporting member carried bysaid sills, said supporting member providing bearing means for said shafts.
37. Car door operating mechanism com prising an inverted V-shaped member having a shaft bearing at its apex and shaft bearings near the extremities of its legs extending transversely to the first mentioned bearing, side flanges for attachment of said member to the $1115 of the car and horizontal flanges for positioning said member with respect to the sills.
