Description

L. A. GALE REENFORCING DEVICE FOR 5102s OF PERFORATIONS Filed (301.. 28, 1924 Patented Dec. 4, i928 teasers rarsnrerrrca.
nnsunrou a. seen, or amateur, MassAcnU-sn'ras, assieuon, BY IVIESNE ASSIGN- MENTS, T REMINGTON BJFSCND ING, AVJARE.
This invent-ion relates to recnfrn'cing or 3 against accidental removal, and an object'of I of the lower margin of the spacer sheet and the invention is to provide a device. or. this character which be securely attached to a sheet in a ready and corvenient inannerand which is simple to to manufacture. l Further objects will hereinafter app-ear and the invention is shown in one of its preferred forms in the accompanyingdrawings in which U :f m r Fig.1 is a cross section of a filing cabinet drawer showing a spacerv sheet in elevation provided with a reenforcing'device;
2 is an enlarged fragmentary elevation spacer sheet shown construct an d inexpensive in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view'of the opposite side of the Fig. 4 is a plan view ofthereinforcing device. a V
The illustrated embodiment of the invention comprisesa drawer of a filing cabinet having end walls (not shown) side walls 1 and 2, an open top 4, and a bottom 3 which is formed with a slot 5 extending longitudinally thereof. Arranged inside the drawer is a suitable number of spacer sheets 6 of relatively stiff material such as cardboard, bristol board or ot 161 suitable material which separate groups of papers or records from each other to keep the papers in'position thus to facilitate finding of a certain paper. To identify the various groups tabs 7 may be fastened in anysuitable manner to the upper portion of the spacer sheets and arranged to project above the margin of the sheets. These tabs may have. suitable indicia according to F i the subject matter of each particular group.
order to hold the spacer sheets in posi tion and prevent them from being accidently pulled'out of the drawer when papers adjacent thereto are removed. eachspacer sheet is provided with a tab 8 integral with the lower margin thereof which is arranged to extend into the slot 5 in the bottom ofthe drawer. Formed in the tab or extension 8 is a perforation 9 elongate longitudinally of the sheet which is arranged to receive the nnnnroncrne DEVICE non sinns or rs'aronArrous.

usual locking rod 10 extending the length of the drawer and detachably connected to the opposite ends thereof. It will thus be understood that the rod 10 must beremoved before the spacer sheets 6 can be withdrawn from the drawer. i
It frequently happens that when papers or other contents of the drawer are withdrawn the spacer sheets 6 are accidently grasped and if a sudden pull is exerted thereon the perforations 9' are torn out so that thereafter the sheets cannot be held in position and 7 their usefulness for the purpose intended is greatlyimpalredi- In order to obviate this objection a reenforcing device A may enclose thelower margin of the tab or extension 8 and surround the perforation 9v in such a manner that outward pull on the spacer sheet 6 will not operatetto tear the rod 10 out of the sheet because the device not only protects the edges or margin of the card immediately over the opposite side of the device.
surrounding and forming the perforation but also reenforces a considerable part of the sheet in the vicinity of the perforation.
Preferably the reenforcing device A is constructed from a flexible, thin plate 11 of brass or other'suitable material out out to provide substantially a U-shaped notch 12 and a substantially Y-shaped notch 13 is formed in the sheet metal piece in opposed relation to the notch 12. In applying the device to the spacer sheet 6, the metal piece is folded approximately along the line 14; over the lower margin of the tab or extension 8 in such a manner that the notch 12 partially surrounds the perforation 9, as indicated. To hold the device A securely in position flaps 15 which are formed by the Y-shaped notch are folded approximately along the dotted lines shown in Fig. 4 through the perforation 9 and The edge of the card which forms the perforation is thus firmly gripped between the two metal pieces, when the flaps 15 are passed through the perforation and folded down on the opposite side. Preferably three flaps 15 are provided on the reenforcing device arranged on three sides of the perforation 9 so that the 8 in the vicinity of the perforation 9 creasing 0i? HEWV'YOBK, N. .Y.,. or folding which would weaken the connec tion between the sheet and locking rod 10 is prevented. A further advantage of the deviceresides in the fact that there are no sharp projecting edges which would prevent a number of sheets from being arranged closely Although I have shown and described a construction which at this time is the best form known to me, it is to be understood that numerous changes in details of constrnction, arrangement and selection of materials may be etl ected without departing from the spirit of the invention especially as defined in the appended claims.
I claim a 1. The combination with a sheet or card having a perforation adjacent a margin thereof, of a pair ct elements on opposite sides at the sheet in the region of said perforation, and integral parts on one element for engaging the other, passing through the per fora: tion and reenliorcing' the sheet surrounding the perQora-tion and adjacent the margin.
2. The combination with a sheet having a perforation adjacent a margin thereof, of a member enclosing the adjacent margin of the sheet and having extensions on opposite sides of the sheet in the vicinity of the pertoration, and an element integral with one of eeaeee said extensions engaging the ot ier extension through the pertora ion and firmly gripping the sheet therebetweeln thereby to protect the sheet from tearin in the direeti on of the m argin.
3. The combination of a spacer sheet having a marginal extension at one end thereof,
said marginal extension having a perforat t-ion to l'GCGlVG a rod for locking the spacer sheet in position, and means for reent'orcing said perforation comprising asheet metal plate enclosing the margin of said extension and constructed partially to surround said perforation, and tabs on a portion of said plate arranged to extend through said per- 'loration and fold over another portion of the plate thereby detachably to fasten the plate to the sheet. 1 V
a. A device of the class described comprising a plate *onstructed to be folded over a mar in oi" a sheet having cat-out portions and designed to partially surround a perfoia tion in said sheet when folded, and toldable tabs integral with a portion of the plate arranged to extend through the perforation and engage another )ortion ot' the plate thereby to reenforce the sides of the perforation.
