ments that may be readily replaced when worn down.
The inner surfaces of the cylinders or other parts of grinding, refining, mixing and crushing machines are roughened by the provision of ridges, in order to enhance the crushing and grinding action, and when such ridges are integral with the cylinder wall or other member and wear down, it is necessary to either replace the cylinder or member or to re-machine same. With the present invention the surface of the cylinder wall or other member is roughened by the provision of removable elements which may be readily replaced, thus saving considerable expense. Y
Another object of the invention is the provision of novel means for assembling rods with a cylinder wall or other member to provide a surface having rounded ridges.
With the forgoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of whatis claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a cylinder wall embodying the improvements.
Figs. 2 and 3 are transverse sectional details on the lines 52-2 and 3-3, respectively, of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a sectional detail illustrating a modification.
The improvement is illustrated as being applied to a cylinder 7 of a crushing, grinding, refining or mixing machine, although it will be understood that the improvements may be embodied in other arcuate or flat members. The cylinder wall is provided with any number of grooves or channels 8, which, as shown, are annular and arallel- Said grooves may beof any suita 1e width and v their walls are undercut, as at 9, sothat said grooves are of dove-tailed form.
\ Disposed Within each groove or channel 8 is a series of rods 10 which may be of any suitable metal or material, and the rods are disposed transversely of the grooves side by side. The rods are of a diameter greater than the depth of the grooves, so that the rods project from the corresponding surface, thereby producing rounded ridges over which the material is crushed, ground, refined or mixed. The ends 11 of the rods are cut obliquely, as at 11, so as to fit under the walls 9 of the grooves, thereby anchoring the rods in place. The cylinder wall has annular portions 12 between the grooves and at the opposite sides of said grooves, which overlap the ends of the rods to hold said rods in place.
To enable the rods to be inserted and removed longitudinal slots or grooves 13 are cut through the portions 12 from the opposite ends ofthe cylinder 7, but need notextend through the central portion 12. The slots 13 intersect the grooves 8 so that the rods may be inserted longitudinallyin the slots 13 to register with the grooves, and the rods may then be moved transversely into place. The rods are thus moved transversely of themselves into the grooves 8 longitudinally of said grooves. This enables the grooves to be filled with rods, and, conversely, the rods may be readily removed from the grooves for replacement when worn down. The slots 13 are preferably dove-tailed in shape, in or der that similarly shaped inserts 1 1 may be placed in said slots between the grooves 8, thereby presenting unbroken surfaces between the sets of rods.
Fig. 4 illustrates the use of rings 12 slipped in the cylinder 7 for holding the rods 10 in place, and said cylinder may have an integral portion 12 between its ends. The rings 12 and portion 12 are of dove-tailed cross-section so as to overlap the ends 11 of the rods 10. It will be apparent that one set of rods 11 may be moved into place, and a ring 12 then slipped into the cylinder, after which the next set of rods may be positioned and the next ring put in place.
Having thus described the invention, what rods of circular cross section seated side by side transversely in said groove to provide a ridged grinding surface, the ends of said rods abutting the Walls of the groove, and said Walls of the groove and ends of the rods being interengaged to hold the rods in the groove and to prevent rotation of the rods.
2. A device of the character described comprising a member having a groove of dovetailed cross-section, and rods of circular cross-section seated side by side transversely in said groove to provide a ridged grinding surface, the ends of said rods being oblique and abutting said Walls of the groove to hold the rods in saidgroove and prevent rotation of the rods.
3. A device of the character described comprising a member having a groove, and rods of circular cross section seated side by side transversely in said groove to provide a ridged grinding surface, the ends of said rods abutting the Walls of the groove, and said Walls of the groove and ends of the rods antenna Wall of said groove transversely of the groove to permit the rods to be moved longitudinally of themselves through said slot into and out of said groove.
t. A device of the character described com prising a member having a groove of dovetailed cross-section, and rods of circular cross section seated side by side transversely in said groove to rovide a rigid grinding surface, the ends 0" said rod being oblique and abutting said Walls of the groove to hold the rods in said groove and prevent rotation of the rods, said member having a slot extending to one Wall of said groove transversely of the groove to permit the rods to be moved longitudinally of themselves through said slot into and out of said groove.
In testimony whereof ll hereunto afiix my signature.
