Other devices have been invented for the purpose of enabling luggage to be carried upon the running boards of motorcars, but

' The invention consists of a parallel motion 7 metal frame or fence havingtwo horizontal members pivoted to anysuitable number of vertical members. The appliance is provided with metal brackets'10'by means of which it is secured to the running board 11 of a motor car by screws that pass through the countersunk holes 12. The-brackets consist of a metal plate of a suitablethickness, one edge '13 being turned upwardly for the purpose of forming a dwarf wall to which the vertical members 14 of the frame are'pivoted; Insecuring the brackets 10 to the runningboa'rd 11 a space will be left between the edge of the running boardv and the inner face of the dwarf wall of the brackets in order to accommodate part of the frame when it is in its collapsed position; Each bracket'lO is slotted as at 15 so that 7 when the fra'meisopened out as shown at Fig; 1, one sideof'the vertical member 14 will abut 90 against oneend of the slot and thercbyprevent the frame from being moved any further in" that direction, -while the flat face of the vertical member opposite to that side which contacts with the dwarf wall will form ar'ub- -v bing contact with a longitudinal edge of the slot and thereby assist in preventing side movement of the vertical member. The frame consists of horizontal members 16-l6 and vertical members 14 pivoted together on the loo parallel motion principle, but in order to enable it to occupythe minimum space when it is closed'down or collapsed, the horizontal members? are pivoted at 17 upon opposite sides of the'vertical members ll thus allow- 106 ingi the horizontal members to lie inthe same horizontal, plane. other end projecting over the slot 15 and being secured, so as to prevent lateral movement by the U shaped metal strap 22 riveted to the bracket. T he lower end of the vertical memher that is pivoted to the locking bracket is rounded as at 23 and this rounded section engages and depresses the spring catch as the frame is being raised to its operative position. a section being cut out of the end of the vertical member 1% to form a recess 24 into which the catch 20 will spring as the member 14: reaches the vertical portion, thereby locking the member 1st between the side of the catch and the end of the slot 15 and preventing movement in either direction. It will be seen that by locking one of the vertical members the whole frame is locked a d cannot be again moved until the spring is disengaged by hand from engagement wth he recess 24. If desired each bracket may be pro *ided with a slot 25 through which a suitable strap may be passed and thence around the luggage and securely fastened in any suitable manner as an additional safeguard against the movement of the luggage packed upon the running board.
I claim:
1. A collapsible luggage carrying device particularly adapted for use on the running boards of motor cars, comprising a plurality of brackets rigidly secured to the under surface of the running board and projecting latorally therefrom and each terminating in a connecting portion, a plurality oi vertical membershaving the lower ends pivoted to the connecting portions of the brackets, a pair of horizontal members arranged on opposite sides oi the vertical members. one of the horizontal members being pivoted directly to each of the vertical members and the other of the horizontal members being pivoted in spaced relation to the other sides of the vertical members so as to permit the horizontal and vertical members being collapsed to lie on the brackets between the connecting portions thereof and edge of the running board and flush with the'upper surface of the running board. and means for locking the device in its tally extended position.
2. A colla )sible luggage -arrying :device particularly adapted for use on the running boards of motor vehicles, comprising a plurality of brackets secured to the under sur face of the running board, a plurality of vertical members having the lower ends pivoted to the brackets, two horizontal members pivoted upon opposite sides of the vertical members, each bracket including a metal plate one side of which is turned upwardly to form a shallow vertical wall to which the corresponding Vertical member is attached, the plate being formed with a slot positioned at the angle formed by the upturned wall, the slot being positioned and dimensioned so as to enable the lower end of the vertical member to move thereinto and to make a sliding contact 1 with the longitudinal edge thereof when it is being raised from horizontal to the vertical position and to prevent it from being moved beyond such vertical position.
3. A collapsible luggage'carrying device particularly adapted for use on the running boards of motor cars, comprising a plurality of brackets secured to the running board, a plurality of ver ical members the lower ends of each of which are pivoted to the brackets, two horizontal members pivoted upon the side of the vertical member, each of the brackets being provided with slots through which the lower portion of the corresponding vertical member projects, a tooth formed on the lower extremity of each vertical member, a plate spring having one end secured to the underside of the bracket and the other and extending over the slot in the bracket and depressed by the tooth when the vertical member is swung to a raised position and engage able beyond the tooth so as to lock each vertical member when the latter has been raised to the full extent so as to prevent collapsing, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. A collapsible luggage carrying device particularly adapted for use on the running boardsof motor vehicles, comprising a plurality of brackets having the lower main portio'ns secured to the under surface of the running board and formed with relatively short upright walls'with the for ard extremities positioned in spaced relation to the adjacent outer edge of the running board, vertical members having the lower ends secured to the upright portions of the brackets, horizontal members positioned upon opposite sides and pivoted to the vertical members, distance pieces interposed between each vertical member and the outer horizontal member so that when the members are collapsed the vertical members and the'inner horizontal member will lie within the space between the upright portions of the brackets and the forward edge of the running board while the outer horizontal member will be arranged on thooutside of the upright portions'of the brackets so that the luggage carrying device when collapsed will not interfere with .the persons stepping on the running board, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
