GUMMED-TAPE-SERVING MACHINE.

This invention relates to'gummed tape dispensing machines and has special reference to tape guiding means for such machines.
One important object of the lnventron is to provide a novel and improved tape guidlng means for gummed tape dispensing machlnes of the type shown in my prior Patent Number 1,592,431, dated July 13, 1926, Reissue Number 16,774, dated October 18, 19 27.
A second important object of the invent1on is to provide an improved guide means for such machines wherein the guides are readily adjustable to accommodate different sizes of tapes and in which such guides will be located in such relation to the remainder of the machine that they will ensure that the tab formed by the machine illustrated in the before mentioned patent will be properly centered in the tape.
With the above and other objects in v ew as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings like characters of reference-indicate like parts in the several views, and:

In carrying out the present embodiment of the invention there is provided a casing having a top plate 10 aud at the rear end of this casing are mounted suitable supports or posts 11 between which is carried the roll R of gummed tape, this being supported on a transverse axis in the form of a screw 12.

This tab forming blade operates through a die opeh ing 18 formed in the plate 10 upon depression of the frame 14 in the usual manner. From the roll the tape T is fed forward over the plate 10 and at the forward end there is provided a guide plate having side portions 19 which rest on and .are secured to the side portions of the top 10 by means of screws 20. At the rear this plate is offset upwardly as at 21 between the side portions 19 and thus is spacedabove the plate 10 so that the tape T can pass between the lower plate 10 and the central portion 21 of the upper plate. Furthermore, this central portion 21 is provided with a slot 22 extending longitudinally from adjacent the rear and from each side of this slot there extends a lateral slot 28 positioned in vertical alinement with the transverse slot 24 formed in the upper plate 10, the slots 23 and 24 accommodating the knife 15 in tape cutting position. The slot 22 is vertically alined above' the die slot 18 so that when the tab is punched it may be grasped and the tape drawn out. Beneath the forward end of the guide plate is located a moistening device which is here shown in the form of a brush 25 having its lower end extending downward into a tank 26 adapted to contain Water. Over this brush the guide plate is arched upwardly as at 27, the forward portion of this arch being cut .away in the form shown in Figure 2 while in the form shown in Figure 5 the arch extends from side portion 19 to side portion 19, being interrupted in the middle by the slot 22.
In the plate 10 symmetrically disposed on opposite sides of the die slot 18 is a pair of arcuate slots 28 and in the upper guide late is a similar pair of a-rcuate slots 29 whic are spaced vertlcally above the slots 28. Pivoted on the upper guide plate by screws 30 is a pair of swinging guide arms 31 each having a finger 32 which extends down through the slot 29 into the slot 28 .and thus bridges the space between the plates where the tape moves. Indices 33 may be used to set these arms. The-screws 30 also serve to hold the rear, end of the upper guide plate on the plate 10 and to clamp the arms 31 in adjusted position, this rear end bein held up by small bosses 34 on its undersi e. Itwill be ob served that the slots 29, being positioned opposite thedie 18 center the tape at this point so that the tab formed by the tab cutter is formed centrally of such tape. It is also to be noted that the rear end of the guide plate extends upwardly as at 35 to form a guard to protect the fingers of the user from the knife and tab cutter.
Obviously, the arms 31 may be swung to bring the finger 32 closer together or further apart in accordance with the size of tape passing through the machine and, when so swung, may be secured in position by tightening the screws 30 if desired.
In front of the brush a cover 11 is provided to cover the front end of the water tank.
It will also be noted that the cover plate 21 acts as a stripperplate so that when the knife and tab cutter move upward they will not carry the tape with them.
There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device'of the kind described and for the purposespecified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material spirit thereof. It is not, therefore, desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is desired to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
1. In a machine for dispensing gummed tape, a tape guide including a lower plate over which a tape travels, an upper plate spaced slightly above the lower plate and under which said tape travels, said upper plate having a pair of symmetrically disposed arcuate slots spaced evenly on opposite sides of the center line of movement of the tape, guide arms pivoted concentrically of the slots, and fingers projecting from the free ends of said arms through said slots and depending below the upper plate.
2. In a machine for dispensing gummed tape, a tape guide including a lower plate, an upper plate spaced slightly above the lower plate to permit the passage of gummed tape between the plates, said plates having registering pairs of arcuate slots symmetrically disposed on opposite sides of the passage for the tape, guide arms pivoted concentrically of said slots, and fingers on said guide arms extending through the slots of the upper and lower plates.
3. In a machine for dispensing gummed tape, a tape guide including a lower plate, an upper plate spaced slightly above the lower plate to permit the passage of gummed tape between the plates, said plates having registering pairs of arcuate slots symmetrically disposed on opposite sides of the passage for the tape',,guide arms pivoted concentrically of said slots on top of the upper plate, and fingers on the free-ends of said guide arms extending downwardly through the slots in the upper plate and entering the slots inthe lower plate.
4.. In a machine for dispensing gummed jape, a tape guide including a lower plate, an upper plate secured on said lower plate at its lateral edges and having its central portion offset upwardly to form a tubular tape passage, said upper plate havin a pair of symmetrically disposed arcuate s ots spaced evenly on opposite sides of the center line of movement of the tape, guide arms pivoted concentrically of the slots, and fingers projecting from the free ends of said arms through said slots and depending below the upper plate.

In a machine for dispensing gummed tape, a tape guide including a lower plate, an upper plate secured on said lower plate at its lateral edges and having its central portion oiiset upwardly to form a tubular tape passage, said plates having registering pairs of arcuate slots symmetrically disposed on opposite sides of the passage for the tape, guide arms pivoted concentrically of said slots on top of the upper plate, and fingers on the free ends of said guide arms extending downwardly through the slots in the upper plate and entering the slots in the lower plate.
7. In a machine for dispensing gummed tape, a tape guide including a lower plate over which a tape travels, an upper .plate spaced slightly above the lower plate and under which said tape travels, said upper plate having a pair of symmetrically disposed arcuate slots spaced evenly on opposite sides of the center line of movement of the tape, guide arms pivoted concentrically of the slots, fingers projecting from the free ion ends of said arms through said slots and d8;

In a machine for dispensing gummed tape, a tape guide including a lower plate, an upper plate secured on said lower plate at its lateral edges and having its central portion offset upwardly to form a tubular tape passage, said plates having registering pairs'of arcuate slots symmetrically disposed on opposite sides of the passage for the tape, guide arms pivoted concentrically of said slots, fingers on said guide arms extending through the slots of the upper and lower plates, and means to hold the arms in adjusted positions.
12. In a machine for dispensing gummed tape, a tape guide including a lower plate, an upper plate secured on said lower plate at its lateral edges and having its central portion offset upwardly to form atubular tape passage, said plates having registering pairs of arcuate slots symmetrically disposed on opposite sides of the passage for the tape, guide arms pivoted concentrically of said slots on top of the upper plate, fingers on the free ends of said guide arms extending downward- 1y through the slots in the upper plate and entering the slots in the lower plate, and
means to hold the arms in adjusted positions.
13. In a machine for dispensing gummed tape, a tape guide including a lower plate over which a tape travels, an upper plate spaced slightly above the lower plate and under which said tape travels, said upper plate having a pair of symmetrically disposed arcuate slots spaced evenly on opposite sides of the center line of movement of the tape, guide arms pivoted concentrically of the slots, and fingers projecting from the free ends of said arms through said slots and depending below the upper plate, said upper plate having an upwardly arched portion spaced forwardly from the slots and fingers whereby to permit formation of an upward bend in the tape in its passage from the machine.
14. In a machine for dispensing gummed tape, a tape guide including a lower plate over which a tape travels, an upper plate spaced slightly above the lower plate and under which said tape travels, said upper plate having a pair of symmetrically disposed arcuate slots spaced evenly on opposite sides of the center line of movement of the tape, guide arms pivoted concentrically of the slots, and fingers projecting from the freeends of said arms through said slots and depending below the upper plate, said upper plate furthef having a longitudinal slot extending forwardly from between said arms and centrally of the plate to permit a guided portion of the tape'to be grasped.
15. In a machine for dispensing gummed tape, a tape guide including a lower plate over which a tape travels, an upper plate spaced slightly above the lower plate and under which said tape travels, said upper plate having a pair of symmetrically disposed arcuate slots spaced evenly on opposite sides of the center line of movement of the tape, guide arms pivoted concentrically of the slots,
and fingers projecting from the free ends of' said arms through said slots and depending below the upper plate, said upper plate having an upwardly arched portion spaced forwardly from the slots and fingers whereby to permit formation of an upward bend in the tape in its passage from the machine, said upper plate further havin a longitudinal slot extending forwardly from between said arms and centrally of the plate to permit a guided portion of the tape to be grasped,
said longitudinal slot extending through the upwardly arched portion of the upper plate.
