The object of our invention is to design a padlock so-that it can be secured to a grooved pin, or bolt, made in one or two parts so that, while the lock will turn freely on the pin, it cannot be removed therefrom without a key.
The present invention is especially adapted for securing spare wheels to the carrier of an auto-mobile. These spare wheels are usually secured tothe carrier by two or more pins. One of the pins is generally provided with a transverse hole to receive the shackle of an ordinary padlock.
It will be understood that the invention can be used for other purposes without departing from the essential features of the invention.

' Referring to Figs. 1 to 5 of the drawings, 1 is apin having a reducedportion in the form of an annular groove 2. In the present wheel frame of an automobile and passes through the hub 3 of the spare wheel. 4 is the lock casing and 5 is the shackle pivoted at 6 to the casing. The casing has a body portion 8, a cap plate 9, and a back plate 10, which is shaped similarly to the cap plate. The cap plate and the back plate have portions 11, that are shaped to conform to the heel portion of the shackle 5, Fig. 1, and extend on each side of the shackle, as shown. The, shackle 5 enters an opening 12 in the casing and is engaged by the 'ordinary locking mechanism, not shown. Extending from the casing between the two portions oft-he shackle is a rib 13, which is shaped as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, so as to fit a portion of the groove 2 in the pin 1 when the shackle is inthe closed position. The shackle is shaped to-fit the other portion of the groove, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3, so that, when the shackle is in the locked position, the lock casing is held onto the pin, preventing the withdrawal of the spare wheel from the pin, but the lock casing can turn freely on the pin so that it is diflicult to hold the lock in the endeavor to free the shackle without a key. Two or vmore grooves are preferably formed in the pin to accommodate wheels having different thicknesses of hub, although, where a pin is made for a special type of wheel, one groove is suiiicient.
In Figs. 6 and '2', a modification is shown in which one side of the pin 1 is fiat to fit of the casing 4? of the .rib 13 adapted to a groove 2 at the side of the main groove. This lock can only be placed in position with the face outwards so that, when the key hole is in the face, it is always accessible.
Fig. 11 is a view showing the invention applied to a lock having a sliding shackle 5 The rib 13 projects into the groove of the pinl between the arms of the shackle.
Fig. 12 shows a pin 1 having a head and a grooved portion of the .pin extends. The
lock 4 is secured to the projecting portion of the pin, holding the door closed.

The combination in a padlock of a Case ing consisting of a body portion and cap and back plates, a shackle the same Width as the body portion; the body portion having a I rib of the same Width as the shackle and ex tending beyond the front and back plates and between the arms of the shackle and arranged to engage a pin projecting through the space between the shackle and rib.
