The present invention relates to improvements in locks, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a key operated actuating means for locks or bolt mechanisms which may be readily substituted for existing types of knobs or handles as employed for the operation of latch mechanisms for doors and the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved key operated actuating means for locks embodying a knob or handle which when in a locked position revolves freely upon its supporting element without operating the latch bolt until insertion of a proper key into the knob.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved la-tch'mechanism operating means which may be readily applied to existing and conventional typesof door locks -without removal of the door plates, and embodying a knob or grip portion and a spindle'portion, with key controlled locking means in the grip ortion for permitting of either free rotatlon of the grlp portion with respect to the spindle portion or for locking of the grip portion for rotation with the spindle portion.
I A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved lock operating device embodying a grip portion and a spindle portion engageable with the lock mechanism, with key actuated means carried by the grip portion for locking of the grip portion to the spindle portion and permitting actuation of the lock mechanism upon rotation of the grip portion.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the 'accompan ing drawings forming a part of this speci cation and in which drawings:

Referring to the drawings in detail, and wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A designates a closurelock mechanism shown applied to a door B, and O a key operated actuating means for the lock mechanism A.
Referring first to the lock mechanism A, the same preferably embodies a tubular casing 5 for permittlng of the mechanism to be readily applied to the door B by merely boring a horizontal hole 6 opening at the free edge .of the door. Mounted for sliding movement within the tubular casing 5 is a latch bolt 7 including a head 8 and a shank 9 provided with a slot 10 opening at the inner end. of the shank. Carried by the casing 5 and extendin transversely of the shank 9 through the s 0t 10, is a retaining pin 11 which serves for preventing rotation of'the latch bolt within thecasing. Encircling the shank portion 9 with one end bearing against the head 8 and the opposite end engaging the retaining pin 11, is an expansion spring 12 for normally projecting the head 8 outwardly past the free edge of the door into the keeper 13. Revolubly mounted adjacent the inner end of the tubular casing 5 is a hub 14 provided with a square opening 15, and carried by the intermediate portion of the hub 14 is a hook shaped arm 16 for moving in an arc longitudinally of the casing 5 upon rotation of the hub. Connected at one end in the slot 10 of the latch shank 9, is a link 17, and the opposite end of which link is rovided with a suitable aperture for receiving the hook like arm 16 carried by the hub 14. A suitable stop 18 is arranged in the path of the arm 16 for limiting movement of the hub 14 in one direction. Provided at the inner end of the tubular casing 5 is a segmental shaped cap 19 for permitting of ready assemblin of the hub. 14, and as will be observed in Figure 9, one end of the hub has bearin engagement in the cap. The outer end 0 the cap 19 has a dove tail fit with the main body portion of the tubular casing 5, and-the inner end of enlarged circular head 45 provided eat its the cap is preferably secured to the body portion of the casing by means of suitable fastening elements as'at 20.
The door B is also provided with a transverse passageway or hole 21 which intersects the hole 6 adjacent its inner end, and arranged at each face of the door are inner and outer face or escutcheon plates 22 and 23 respectively, and which plates are provided respectively with circular openings 24 and 25 which align with the passageway 21. As will be obsereved in Figures 1 and 2, when the lock mechanism A is inserted into the longitudinal opening 6, the rotatable hub 14 has its axis arranged in axial alignment with the axis of the openings provided in the face plates 22 and 23.
Referring now to the key operated actuating means for the closure lock mechanism A, and referring specifically to the type of actuating means as illustrated in Figures 1 to 10 inclusive, the same embodies a knob V 30 formed with a hollow head for grip portion 31 and a tubular barrel or shank 32 having a reduced inner end forming a bearing portion 33 for mounting in the opening 25 of the outer face plate 23. This reduced bearing portion 33 provides'an internal annular shoulder 34 adjacent the inner end of.
the shank, and anexternal annular shoulder 5 35 for bearing engagement with the face plate 23. The head or grip portion 31 is Y preferably of two-part construction for facilitating assembly of the device, and in the example shown embodies a cap 36 provided with bosses 37, and an inner section 38 through which suitable screws as at 39 may extend for threaded connection with the bosses 37. The sections 36 and 38 of the grip portion 31 may be of course be secured together in any preferred manner such as v by welding the joint between the sections. The cap section 36 is provided with an axially disposed circular opening 40 having its axis arranged in axial' alignment with the axis of the tubular barrel or shank portion Carried by the knob 30 is a spindle 42 embodying an elongated square stem portion 43 provided at one'endwith a cylindrical portion 44 which is rotatably mounted in the bearing portion 33, and provided at the outer end of the cylindrical portion 44 is an outer face with a diametrically extending T-shaped slot 46. As will be observed in Figures 1 and 2, this circular head 45 is of a diameter to revolubly fit within the tubular shank ,32 with the inner side of the face having bearin engagement with the internal the spindle projects through the similarly'lw annular shou der 34, and which" shoulder shaped opening 15 in the hub 14 and mounted on the inner end of the stem 43 is an inside knob 48 including a shank portion 49 provided with an opening 50 for receiving the stem 43. The knob 48 may be connected with the stem 43 by means of the usual screw 51 having engagement with the stem 43 in any preferred manner.
Mounted within the outside knob 30 is a 16 cylinder lock 52 embodying a. shell or case 53 provided with a central bore 54 for revoluble mounting of a plug 55 having a lug 56 projecting from its inner end at the circumferential portion of the plug. The shell )1 case 53 and which is mounted against rotation within the knob 30 has a portion projecting into the knob shank 32 asat 57, with the inner end of the sleeve portion 57 engaging the outer face of the spindle head 45 29 in a manner for preventing movement of the spindle longitudinally of the shank 32. The revolving plug 55 is provided with a keyway 58. for receiving a suitable key 59. Carried by the lug 55 and preferably arranged in longitudinal alignment with the lug 56, is a series of pin tumblers 60 which are adapted to cooperate with complementary sets of drivers 61 and 62 carried by the case 53 at diametrically opposite points along the plug 55. By observing Figures 1 and 2 it will.
be seen that by so having the drivers 61 and 62 arranged at diametrically opposite points of the bore 54, that such will permit of the key 59 being readily inserted and withdrawn from the keyway 58 when the keyway is I aligned with either set of drivers.
Rigidly carried by the inner end of the shell sleeve portion 57 is a' guide plate 64 provided with a rectangular shaped guide opening 65 the axis of which is arranged in axial alignment with the axis of the revolving plug 55. I
Mounted for-sliding movement longitudinally in the bore 54 of the lock shell 53, is a keeper 66 of special formation and which keeper embodies a cylindrical head 67 and. a rectangular shaped shank portion 68 provided with a reduced portion 69 forming a T-shaped head 70 of rectangular shape in 56 formation at the inner end of the shank portion. The cylindrical head 67 and Which is adapted for slidably fitting within the bore 54 at the'inner end of the revolving lock plug 55, is provided at its outer end with a cam face 71 to be engaged by the inner end of the lug 56 in amanner for moving the keeper inwardly upon rotation of the plug 55. The rectangular shaped shank portion 68 of the keeper is adapted to be slidably mounted in the opening of the guide plate 64 in a manner whereby the keeper is held a ainst rotation within the lock case 53.

As will also be observed in Figure 1, when the keeper 66 is in its normal retracted position, that the T-shaped head 7 O is withdrawn from the T slot 46 of the spindle head45, and thus no connection is made between the knob 30 and spindle 42 and thus allows free revolving of the knob without imparting rotation to the spindle for actuation of the closure lock mechanism A.
Referring to the operation of the lock, and with particular reference to the showing in Figure 1 which illustrates the normal or closure locked position of the knob and in which position the knob is free to revolve without operating the lock mechanism A, it will be seen that upon insertion of the key 59 that the tumblers 60 are moved to a position by the key for allowing rotation of the plug 55, and which rotation of the plug 55 through 180 to a position as illustrated in Figure 2, will cause the keeper 66 to be moved inwardly by reason of the lug 56 acting upon the cam face 71. This rotation of the plug 55 through 180 will cause the T head 70 to be moved into the T slot 46 for locking the knob'30 to the spindle 42, and allow the key to be withdrawn with the parts in said positlon by reason of the set of drivers 62 being arranged diametrically opposite the drivers 61. Upon removal of thekey with the parts in a position as shown in Figure 2, rotary motion imparted to the knob 30 will be transmitted to the spindle 42 by engagement of the head 70 in the T shaped slot 46 of the spindle 45 and thus allow the iatch bolt 7 to be retracted from the keeper As will be observed in Figures 5 and 6, the keeper head 70 is of a width substantially equal to the width-of the entrance opening to the T shaped slot 46, and of a length greater than the width of the major portion of the T shaped slot. When the head 7 0 of the keeper engages in the slot 46, that portion of the shank 68 between the reduced portion 69 and cylindrical head 67 moves into the rectangular shaped guide plate opening 65 so that upon rotation of the knob, the keeper will also be rotated for rotation of the spindle 42.
It will readily be seen that if but one set of drivers 61 or 62 were provided, that the key 59 could not be withdrawn from. the plug 55 and leave the parts in a position as illustrated in Figure 2 for maintaining the knob in a closure lock releasing position.
With reference to the showing of the parts as illustrated in' Figure 3, such shows the plug 55 as havingbeen rotated through180 for moving the keeper 66 into the spindle head 45 and then returned to its normal closure locked position with the lug 56 out of engagement with the cam face 71. This retention of the keeper 66 connected with the spindle head 45 is accomplished by imparting a partial rotation to-the knob 30 in a clockwise direction and which will cause the T-shaped head 70 to engage behind the flanges of the T slot 46 in a manner as illustrated in Figure 6. This position of the 4 parts will be found desirable when entering the room for a short period, since such will permit of the parts being automatically returned to a closure locked position (with the knob freely revoluble upon the spindle 42) upon rotation of the knob in a counter "knob and spindle, and thus allowing for a person when traveling, to carry the unit and readily substitute the same for the usual knob as found in hotels or the like for locking the room against entrance b means of the usual hotel keys. It will also e observed that by so having the knob freely revoluble upon the spindle 42 that such .will prevent the lock from being broken by excessive pressure as in those types of knob locks wherein the knob is looked a ainst rotation for reventing operation of t e closure lock mec anism.
Referring now to the form of the inven tion as illustrated in Figures 11 to 21 inclusive, and wherein the device has been shown.
as embodied in a lock such as employed in the doors of motor vehicles, the letter A designates a closure lock mechanism of any preferred form shown applied to a door or closure B, and C the modified form of key operated actuating means for the lock-mechanism A.
With this form of the invention the head or grip portion 31' is in the form of a handle having embodied therein a cylinder lock 52' comprising a shell or case 53 rovided with,
a bore 54:" and forming a re uced tubular sleeve portion 57. Rigidly secured to the sleeve portion 57 is a barrel 32' provided at its inner end with a reduced bearing portion 33 forming an internal annular shoulder 34. It may here be stated that the barrel portion 32' and bearing portion 31' correspond respectivelywith the knob shankf 32 and bearing portion 33 of the knob type of lock as illustrated in Figure 1. The main body portion of the case 53 may be pro:
vided with a suitable boss 75 for receiving in any preferred manner a suitable handle Carried by the inner end of the barrel 32" is a spindle 42 of identical construction as that as defined invFigure' 1, embodying a square stem portion 43', a bearing portion tion of the spindle 42'. A suitable knob 48' may be secured in any preferred manner to the inner end of the square stem portion 43'. Revolubly mounted in the lock case 53' at the outer end of the bore 54;, is a plug 55' having a reduced inner end 77 and which plug is provided with an outwardly opening eyway 58' for receiving a suitable key 59'. Carried by the plug 55' and arranged longitudinally of the key way 58, 'is a series of pin tumblers 60 having a set of comple mentary drivers 78 which are carried by the lock case 53'. It may here be well to state that with the type of closure lock operating means as disclosed in Fi sive, that but one set 0 drivers 78 is provided for cooperating with the pin tumblers 60 for looking I the revolving plug 1 55' against rotation.
Rigidly carried by the inner end of the lock case sleeve portion57' is a guide plate 64: provided with a rectangular shaped guide opening 65, and this guide plate 64:
as will be observed in Figures 12 and 17 lies in surface contact with the outer face of the spindle head 45 in which the key shaped slot 46' is provided.
Mounted for sliding movement longitudinally within the bore 54', is a keeper 66 as illustrated in Figure 10, and the head 70 of which is normally disposed in the guide "plate opening 65 when the keeper is in a retracted position as illustrated ure 12. 7
Mounted for artial rotation upon the inner reduced en 77 of the plug 55, is a key releasin cap 80 provided with a circumferentia y extending slot 81 which extends for slightly more than 180 about the cap, and formed at and projecting from the inner end of the cap is a keeper operating lug 56 forengagement'with the cam. face 71 v in Fig-.

A stop pin 82 carried by the reduced portion 77 works in the circumferentially extendin slot 81 for permitting relative rotation 0% the plug 55 and 'cap. 80 within of rotation. This slot'81 and stop. in 82 is for the purpose of allowing the p ug 55 to be resales I rotated for a complete turn without rotating the lug 56 through more than 180, and also allows for the lug 56 to be left either in a position as illustrated in Figure 12 or in a position as illustrated in Figure 17 and which allows for the key 59 to be withdrawn from the plug 55'.
As to the operation of the key operated closure lock actuating means as disclosed in Figures 11 to'21 inclusive, and which construction will permit of the key 59 being inserted and withdrawn from the keyway 58' with the parts in eithera locked or unlocked position without the employing of two sets of pin drivers as at 61 and 62 in Figure 1, it will be seen that with the parts in a position as illustrated in Figure 12, that the key may be readily inserted for aligning the joints between the pin tumblers and drivers 7 8 with the circumferential face of the plug 55 and which will allow. for free rotation of the plug in either direction b means of the key 59'. Upon rotation 0 the plug in a clockwise direction the pin 82 will engage in one end of the slot 81 and revolve the cap 80 so that the lug 56 acts upon the cam face 71 of the keeper 66 for moving the keeper longitudinally so that the T head 70 moves into the T shaped slot 46 of the spindle head 45. In this position the spindle l2 may be rotated upon rotation of the hand grip 31', but the key cannot be withdrawn from the keyway because of its being locked against withdrawal by means of the pin tumblers. This position of the keyway and lug 82 is illustrated in Figure 16. Upon counter rotation of the plug the pin 82 will move in the .slot 80 to a position as illustrated in Figures 17 and 18, leaving the cap 80 in its adjusted position and allowin the pin tumblers 60 to be again aligne with the drivers '78 so that the key may be withdrawn and the drivers moved into the plug for preventing rotation thereof and allowing the keeper 66 to be held in a connected position with the spindle 422. I
By observing Figure 20 it will be seen that the actuating means C may also be operated in a manner for allowing the keeper to spring out of the "llshaped slot 46' upon rotation of the grip portion 31 in a direction counter to that r imparting rotary movement to the spindle d2.
In both forms it" will be seen that the spindle is revolubly carried by the grip portion in which the cylinder lock is mounted, and that upon rotation of the cylinder lock plug, a connection is made between the grip portion and spindle whereby the spindle will be rotated upon rotation of the grip portion. It will also be apparent that the actuating means is applicable to varioustypes of closure lock mechanisms em revoluble hubs, and that means is provided whereby the key for the cylinder lock may be withdrawn from the lock with the keeper in a connected or disconnected position with respect to the spindle.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that a novel and efficient type 0t key operated actuating means for closure lock mechanisms has been provided embodying features whereby the device may be readily applied to existing types of closure lock mechanisms either as a permanent or temporary actuating means therefor, and one wherein when the closure lock is in a. locked position, the grip portion of the actuating means is freely revoluble upon a spindle carried by the grip portion and connected with the lock mechanism. It will also be apparent that a novel arrangement has been provided whereby the parts of the actuating means may be disposed in a condition after removal of the key, to allow the connection between the grip portion and spindle to be automatically broken upon rotation of the grip portion in a direction counter to that for proper actuation of the closure lock mechanism. J
Changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be made to the specific terms of the invention shown and described, without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the following claims.
ll claim:
1. A key operated closure lock actuator comprising a spindle having a head formed at one end thereof provided with a trans-' verse slot opening at the outer face of the head, a grip portion swivelly coupled to the spindle head, a cylinder lo'ck mounted in the grip portion and embodying a rotatable key released plug in axial alignment with the axis of said spindle, said plug having a lug projecting from its inner end, a. keeper mounted against rotation between the plug and spindle head and embodying a cam face in confronting relation with the inner end of the lug and a shank portion movable by contact of said lug with the cam face into the slot of the spindle head for coupling the grip portion for rotation with the spindle, \and spring means for normally urging the shank portion'out of coupled engagement axis of the spindle, a key released plug revend, a keeper mounted against rotation in olubly mounted in the outer end of said bore and having a projection at. its inner said bore at the inner end of said plug, embodying a cam head engageable by the plug pro ection and a shank having a polygonal .shaped head at its inner end movable into the slot of the spindle head upon rotation of the lock plug, and a spring encircling the shank portion and acting upon't-he cam head.

3. A key operated closure lock actuator comprising a spindle having" an enlarged head formed at one end thereof and provided with a T-shaped slot opening at the outer face of the head, a grip portion revolubly mounted upon the spindle and held against movement oil the spindle by said A head, a cylinder lock mounted in the grip portion and embodying a rotatable key replug, and spring means acting upon the keeper for normally urging the T-shaped head out of coupled connection within the T- shaped slot of the spindle head.
4. A key voperated closure lock actuator comprising a,spindle having a head provided at one end thereof havin a slot opening at the outer face of the hea a grip portion rotatably mounted on the spindle and held against movementthereof by said, head, a cylinder lock casing mounted inthe grip portion and provided with a borehaving its axis in axial alignmentwith the. axis of said spindle, a guide plate rigidly carried by the inner end of the casing and having a rectangular shaped guide opening therein, a key v released plug revolubly mounted in the bore at the outer end of said casing and having a cam projection provided at its inner, end, a keeper mounted 'in' the bore at the inner end of said plug embodying .a cam head and a rectangular shaped shank portion slidable in the opening of'the guideplate, said shank portion being movable'into the slot of the spindle head upon rotation of the cylinder lock plug, and a spring encircling the shank portion and engageable with said cam head and guide plate for normally, urging the keeper to a retracted position with the shank portion out of engagement in the slot of the spindle head.
' 5. A key operated closure lock actuator comprising a spindle having a head formed at one end thereof provided with a T-shaped slot opening at the outer face of the head, a grip portion rotatably mounted on the handle and held against movement thereof by said head, a cylinder lock casing mounted in the grip portion and having its inner end engageable with the outer face of the spindle head, said casing having a bore aligning with the axis of said spindle, a
guide plate carried by the inner end of the casing and having a rectangular shaped guide opening for aligning with the slot in the spindle head, a key released plug revolubly mounted in the bore at the outer end of the casing and having a cam projection at its inner end, a keeper mounted in the bore at the inner end of the plug and embodying a cam head engageable by the cam projection and a rectangular shaped shank portion slidable in the guide plate opening and having'a T-shaped head formed at its inner end engageable in the slot of the spindle head, and a coil spring encircling the keeper shank between said cam head and guide plate for normally urging the keeper toward the c linder lock plug .for drawing the T-shape head out of coupledi engagement in the T slot of the spindle hea 6.
