E. GRIESBAQJM RAIL TIE Filed July 15, 1957 l0 l V I7 i ,r m @IWW @E {CD/7@ @D MJ@ l l (fmQz/@jg L. 2l @D tie and, also provide means through which the track bed material passes, therebyproviding firm anchoring of the tie.
The centrally and transversely disposed .openings 14 are arranged in thetop'portionsv Y a and are properly spaced with respectto the central line of the rail so that the base flanges thereof overlap saidopenings.
Extending upwardly through each pair of openings-are the upwardly presented portions 28 of a U`shaped clamp'29, which latter isl disposed within the chamber formed by thecentral shoulder or rib 20 and thehorizontally disposed portion 30 of clamp 29 bears against the underside of portion 2Oa as shown in Figure 5. Clamp, 29 is formed of inverted channel shape in cross section, being provided with vertically disposed marginal flangesl. These fianges terminate substantially on the samehorizontal plane withthe Aflanges of the rail, and the ends 32 of portions 28 are flangeless so that they may be forcibly bent or hammered over the edges of the rail flanges as'shown in full lines in Fig- 'i'n'g said anchoring means of suchr pressure andinsuring an eflicient interengagement betweenthe rail and tie'at all times. When ends 32 are bent over the edges of the rail flanges, the top portion 20a. isstressed and vhas a tendency to hold the railto the seats.
vA railway tie of vmy improved construction is comparatively vlightin weight,` is of strong construction'and isprovided withrail attaching means which can be attached and detached from position without the use of fastening devices, thereby yprolonging the life of the tie. Thev notched :edges ofthe base flanges of Vthe -tie allow the spiking of.
the tie when so desired, while when its Vlianges are embedded in the track bed, said edgesserve to hold the tie'unmovable. The tie, as well as the attaching` means, can be stamped out of sheet, metal,;thereby enrvabling production thereof on. a .large scaleV and at a lowcost.
Obviously various changes inthe construction of my improved tie can be vmade'vvith- 'out departing fromthe spirit of my invention. Y i Y Iclaim: f'- Y Y. 1.- A .railway tie comprising a' metallic Vmember having a pair ofV raised rail seats ydisposed near each 'end and spaced frompeach other,l and a U-shaped clamping member arlaterally.
ranged against the underside of said member intermediate each pair offseats andhaving its end portions projecting upwardly and inwardly therefrom for engaging the edges of the base flanges of the'railand clamping the latter against said seats.
2. A rail tie comprising a metallic member having l a centrally, Vand longitudinally disposed depression, thereby providing at eachV end of the tie a kpair of spaced rail seats,'and a U-shaped clampingmember ar-4 ranged against the underside of the central portion intermediate said rail seats and have ing its ends projecting upwardly through openings formed therein for engaging the Vedges of the base fianges of the rails and clamping the latter to the tie,.the top of said central portion being spaced, from said rail. 3. A railway tie comprising ak metallic member provided with a centrally and longitudinally disposed depression .and having a plurality of spaced horizontally disposed faces arranged in'pairs near each 'end of said tie` and in the same horizontal plane with each other, whereby each rail has a two-.point supporting engagement'with each tie, and means engaged with said member intermediate each pair of said faces for engaging the flanges of Vsaid lrail and securing it to saidtie. l 4. A railway tie comprising a metallic member provided with a plurality of ytie supporting surfaces arranged inthe same horizontal'plane, thetopfof the tie intermediate said surfaces being depressed and. spaced from the rail, a U-shaped clamping member arranged against the underside of saidjdepressed portion and having its ends projecting upwardly through openings 'formed therein, said ends being adapted to be bent Yover the edges of the flanges of the'rail for securing the latter in position.
5.v A railway tie comprising a--metallic VsoV member provided with a plurality of tie supporting surfaces arranged in-the -samevhorizontal -plane,'the top of the tie intermediate said surfaces beingdepressed'and spaced from the rail," a U-shaped clamping member arranged 'against the underside of said depressed portion and having its ends pro jecting upwardly through openings formed therein, said ends being adapted to be bent over the edges of .theflanges ofthe rail lfor securing the latter in position, and lugs pro- Y jecting upwardly and transversely in spaced relation with said rail surfaces for engaging the outer edges Vofthe flanges -of said rails and preventing spreading ofsaid .rails` the topv of said member intermediateysaid faces having a depressed portion disposed below the horizontal plane of said faces,
` edges disposed horizontally and outwardly saidk depressed portion being provided with ,a pair of openings arranged one at each side of each rail, and a U-shaped member placed against the underside of said depressed portion and having itsends projecting upwardly through said openings at each side of the rail flange and adapted to be hammered over the edges thereof for securingy saidrail to said tie. v 7. A metallic railway tie comprising a pair of vertically disposed sides having its to form a base for said tie and having its vtop provided with two series of surfaces disvertically disposed sides having its edges disposed horizontally and outwardly to form a base for said tie and having its top provided with two series of surfaces disposed in different horizontal planes, one series being arranged in spaced relation with each other to provide a pair' of spaced rail seats near each end of the tie and the other series being disposed below 'the horizontal planeof the rst series and intermediate each pair of said rail seats whereby the base of the rail is spaced from the top of said second series, and means extending upwardly from the last-mentioned series of surfaces and adapt,` ed to engage the flanges of `each rail for seg 4curing the latter against said rail seats, andl yprojections arranged adjacent -to each rail seat for engaging the edge of the outer flange of eachrail to prevent spreading of said rails. f 1
9. A metallic rail tie formed of sheet metal pressed to provide a pair of vertically disposed sideshaving its edges disposed horizontally and outwardly to form the base for the tie and having its top formed to pron y'vide a pair of longitudinally disposed spaced ridges, and a centrally and longitudinally ,disposed ridge, the latter being disposed below the-plane of the first-mentioned ridges, the side ridges formingl spaced seats for the rails and the central ridge being provided` with openings, and means extending through said openingsfor engaging the edges of the flanges of each rail and' securing the latter against the seats formed insaid sideridges, the body portion of said tie being provided with suitable openings for receiving the track bed-material and anchoring said tie in position.
10. As a new article of manufacture, a rail Atie comprising a metallic member of invert ed U-shape in cross section and providedinv its web portion with a plurality of rail supporting faces arranged in the same horizon;`
tal plane, the portion intermediate said faces being depressed, and `lugs projecting up* war'dly from said web portion and disposed transversely in spaced relation with said railrsupporting faces and adapted to engage' the outer edges of the flanges of rails tov pre-` Y vent spreading of said rails laterally.
In testimony whereof Iyhereunto affix my signature this eighth of July, 1,927.
