Patented Sept. 18, 1928.
UNITED STATES PATENT. orricni JAMES JOLLY, OF BOLTON, ENGLAND.
DRAWING R DRAFTING- MECHANiSM.
Application filed July 18,
tially with grooves of varying diameter and in constructing one or more lines of drafting rollers with a series of annular grooves of varying diameter from which the sluh or rove- '1 is passed to and fro in succession over a second roller either plain or similarly grooved.
The invention will be fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Fig. l is a side elevation of roller stand.
Fig. 2 is a plan of drawing rollers.
Figs. 3 and 4 are plans of drawing rollers showing modifications.
F is a perspective view showing the method or process of high drafting.
: H In carrying out the invention it is proposed to employ two additional lines l and 5 of rollers as well as the ordinary lines 1, 2 and 3 of fluted rollers, all mounted in a roller stand S with ordinary weighted rollers A, held in position by cap-bars B.
In the construction shown in Fig. 2 the line 5 of rollers comprises a roller 1) formed with a number of annular grooves (Z (Z (Z (Z of different diameters each successive groove being of greater diameter than the preceding one giving a gradual increase in diameter from the groove (Z to the groove (Z and the line at of rollers comprises a smooth surface or fluted roller E. I
In the construction shown in Fig. 3 the line l of rollers comprises a roller G formed with a number of annular grooves to of different diameters each successive groove being of greater diameter than the preceding one giving a gradual increase in diameter from the groove 9 to the groove g and the line 5 of rollers comprises a smooth surface orfluted roller H.
In the construction shown in Fig. 1 both M formed with annular grooves K to K and rollers one of which is grooved circun'iferenlines of rollers l and 5 comprise rollers K and 1927. Serial No. 206,694.
m to m On oneor and M the grooves are of different diameters each successive groove being of greater diameter than the preceding one giving a gradual increase in diameter.
This construction of grooved roller gives a greater surface speed to each successive.
groove as the roller rotates.
r! 1 V ihe two lines of rollers s and 5 are preferably driven at the same speed.
.both ofthe rollers K it is preferred tohave the grooved roller 1 as line 5 as shown in Fig. 2, though" it mav be line a as in Fig. 3 or both lines 4 and 5 may be grooved as in-Fig. 4:. 7
- in operation the rove with as little twist as possible is passed from the guide funnel N over the smooth or fluted roller and around the small diameter groove of the grooved roller, again around the smooth or fluted second groove-of the grooved i l'OllGl and so on around any number of the roller and the grooves as required as indicated by diagram Fig. 5. As each successive groove has a larger diameter and greater surface speed than the preceding one, a certain amount of draft is imparted to the rove as it passes from one groove to the next. After passing over two or more of the grooves in the grooved roller the rove passes in the regular wav to the lines 3, 2 and 1 of rollers. L
What I claim as my invention and desire to protect by Letters Patent/is 1. The combination with a three-roller draft frame, of two additional lines of rollers added thereto and in such a manner that the material being drafted is pilSSCd, to and fro, over and around these additional lines of rollers, the rollers in one of the additional lines being provided with grooves of varying diameters.
2. The combination with a three-roller draft frai'ne, of two additional lines of roll-' of rollers, the rollers in one ofthe additional (fliameters, and. a guiding funnel adjaeeht to the smallest diametered groove to direct material thereto.
4. The combination with it "three-toner draftframe, of two additional lines of rollers added thereto and in such a manner that the material being drafted is nssed to end fro, over and around these at ditional lines 10 of rollers, the rollers in one of the additional lines being provided with grooves ofvaryingj,
diameters, each groove being M greater diameter than the preceding grooveover Whiclh the material hzijspassed, and a guiding funnel adjacent to the smallest dial-metered groove to direct maeeriel thereto.
7 n testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand:
1 JAMEfi JOLLY.
