This invention relates to new and useful improvements in power winches for tractors especially adaptable for use in. the drilling of oil, gas, and artesian wells as well as for the pulling of rods, and tubing from a well, the bailing of the same and other such purposes.
The primary object of the invention resides in the provision of a winch of this char actor that is so constructed as to permit of its association upon the forward end of a conventional tractor, and to receive its power from the power take off shaft of the tractor.
A further and important object resides in the provision of a winch of this character that includes a cable drum together with means for causin the quick change of rotation of the drum from one direction to another, and this through the medium of a single operating lever.
A still further and important object is to arovide a winch of this character that may e associated with conventional designs of tractors without in any manner whatever altering the construction of such tractors.
Withthe foregoing and other objects in view as the nature of the invention will be better understood the same comprises the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In the drawings wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a fragmentaryside elevation of the front end of a conventional tractor equipped with my improved winch construction.
Figure 2 is a top plan View. thereof.
Figure 3 is a front end elevation.
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail section taken in back of the cable drum of the winch for more clearly disclosing the means whereby the rotation of the drum may be rapidly rcversed for causing the quick winding or unwinding of the cable with respect to said drum, and p Figure 5 is a fragmentary section of a modified form of drive means between said cable drum and the tractor operated shaft of the present winch device.
Now having particular reference to the drawings, A designates fraglnentarily a conventional design of tractor that includes the usual side frame bars B-B between the forward ends of which is supported the usual motor C having the usual power take off shaft D.
In carrying out my invention there is rigidly secured to the forward ends of the tractor frame bars BB a pair of horizonta ly arranged extension bars 55, preferably interconnected at their forward ends by cross bar 6. Journaled within suitable bearings rupon the bars 5-5 adgacent tue rear ends thereof is a transverse shaft 8, the outer end of which is equipped with a sprocket ger 9 over which is trained an endless chain 10 that extends rearwardly and is in turn trained over a sprocket ear 11 upon the end of said tractor power take off shaft D, see Figures 1 and 2.
Arranged upon this shaft 8 inwardly of the bar 5 adjacent the sprocket gear 9 is a gen raliy conventional inside friction clutch unit 2 which in the present instance includes a rpur gear 13 loose upon the shaft 8 toge her with a friction clutch member 1 1 splined upon the said shaft 8 and adapted for engagement with the rim of the gear for looking or releasing the same with respect to said shaft 8.

Arranged transversely beneath the exten sion bars 5-5 attached to the tractor frame bars B-B and at a point below the shaft 8 is a cross strap 17 to which are pivoted the lower ends of a pair of upwardly extending levers 1818 equipped intermediate their ends with yokes 1919 for association with the movable clutch member 14 0f the clutch unit 12 and with the collar 16 of the bevel friction gear 15, respectively. The
upper end of the lever 18 adjacent the frictendin rod 23 that is pivoted to the adjacent arm of a bell crank 24: that is in turn piv oted to the upper end of a vertical strap 25 secured at its lower end to the adjacent bar 5 of the winch frame structure.
As clearly disclosed in Figure 2 the outer arm of the bell crank serves as a lever for swinging the lovers 18-18 upon their pivots for controlling the movement of the movable clutch member 14 of the clutch unit 12, and the splined friction gear 15 in similar directions upon the shaft 8. j
Journaled within a pair of transversely alined bearings 26-26 upon the top sides of the extension bars 5-5 forwardly of the hearing 7-T is a shaft 27 keyed to which is a cable drum 28. The end of this cable drum adjacent the sprocket gear 9 is equipped with a large sprocket gear 29 over which is trained an endless chain 30 that is extended rearwardly and thence turned over the sprocket gear 13 sov that a rotation of this gear will cause the rotation of the drum 28 in one direction. Upon the inner end of this drum is a large beveled friction gear 31 complementary to the bevel friction gear 15 of the shaft 8, and "adapted to be engaged by this gear 15 when the bell crank lever 24: is so operated as to cut out the operation of the gear 13 of the clutch 12 for causing the rota tion of the drum 28 in a reverse direction InFigure 5 a slightly modified form of driving mechanism is provided between the inner end of the shaft 8 and the drum shaft 27. In this instance the inner end of said drum 28 is equipped with a gear 31, while upon the power operated shaft which in this view is designated 8 there is splined a small gear 15. This gear 15' is constructed for operable association with the innermost vertical lever 18 so that when said lever is operated simultaneously with the operation of the adjacent lever, said gear 15 will be moved into or out of engagement with the gear 31 of the drum 28.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a highly novel, simple, and inexpensive power winch for association with eonventional types of tractors that is well adapted for all the purposes heretofore designated and even though I have herein shown and described the invention as consisting of certain detail structural elements it is nevertheless to be understood that some changes may be made therein without affecting the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1 In a )ower winch for tractors, a pair of longitudinally extending spaced frame bars rigidly secured to the forward end of the tractor, a U-shaped bar connecting at its ends to therespective frame bars and at the bottom sides thereof, the main powergshaft journalcd transversely of said frame bars, a driving connection between the shaft and the power take-off shaft of the tractor, a clutch upon said shaft including an internal clutch member having a sprocket upon its outer face and loose upon the shaft, and a clutch member splined upon the shaft and constructed for engagement with the first first-mentioned shaft, the cable drum oper at-ively associated with said shaft, a sprocket upon one end of the drum in alinement with the sprocket upon the first-mentioned shaft,
a chain connection between said sprockets, a
gear upon the opposite end of thedrum, and single means for causin the actuation of the movable member of t e clutch and said gear upon the first mentioned shaft, whereby the drum may be rotated in reverse directions, said means consisting of a pair 'of levers having their lower ends pivotally eon neeted in the U shaped member, and in spaced relation to each other, one of said levers being operatively connected to the splined clutch member, the opposite lever being operatively connected to the gear, said levers being connected at their upper ends, and a single throw lever operatively associatedwith one of said levers to cause the simultaneous parallel movement of the le- CHARLES R.
