EDWARD ADAM THIELEN, OF DOERANCE, 'KANSAS HOIST.
Application filed September 15, 1927. Serial No. 219,641.
The invention has for its object to provide certain new and useful improvements in hoists of the erano type and it particularly has for its object to provide a hoist of the character diselosed in my application Serial No; 173,'736, filed March 8, 1927, of which application the present is in part a continuation thereof. i The present invention has for its object to provide a hoist mechanism whichoan be used as an automobile jack byremoving the erane elements but which is especially adapted for use as a hoisting crane in automobile garages, repair shops, factories, ete.
lVith the above and' other objects in View that will hereinatter appear the invention further resides in the novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all OE'WhlCh will be first'` tully described, then be particularlypointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the aceompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a face View illustrating the invention in use. y
' Figure '2 is an edge view of the parts Figure is a detail perspective View of the lifting'brace and hearing` forming Inember. v
Figure 4 is a detail perspectve view of 'the derri'ck: arm and mounting post sepa- -.rated. e
Figure .5 is a vertical longitudinal section' of another embodiment' of my invention. Figure 6 is aplan View of the same.
r Figure 7 is a vertical cross' section on the line 7--7 of Figure 5. e
Referring now to the embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figures 1 to 4 of the drawings; 1 indicates the base of my improved hoist to which are Secured the channel iron side standards 2 in which the slide channels or standards 3 are adapted to' be vertically guded. i
:The base. 1 and standards2 and any suit- .,able brace-.tor holding these parts rigid in the relation shown, together with the lifting and lowering devices later to be descrbech constitute a ,stationary unit. "The slide standards 3 and the cross brace or platform 4- carried ,thereby and suitably braeed as` at 5 constitute a lifting unit' The lifting head 6 earried at the upper end of a plunger 7 moved by the piston 8 'slide standards 3.
operable in the eylinder 9 is Secured to the cross member 4 through the top 10 of which eylinder the said plunger 7 projects.
A suitable fluid duet 11 is provided for admitting fluid under pressure. in the cylinder 9 to engage the piston 8 and control lifting and lowerino' movement of the plunger 7 'and head 6. Thus the piston may be said to be part of the stationary unithereinbefore referred to and the head 6 and plunger and piston 7-8 may be said' to eonstitute a part of the-` lifting unit hereinbefore referred to.
In carrying out the means ,embodying my present invention Iprovide an inverted U- shaped braee member 12, the' mounting arms 13 of which are removably insertible in soekets 14 formed in the upperends of the The said arms are each provided with a plurality of Aadjustment holes 15 adapted to receivesecuring pins 16 insertable through selected ones of the 'holes and adapted to engage the upper ends ofthe standards 3 to secure the member 12 at vertically adjusted said standards;
The member 12'. may be equipped With any suitable anti-slip devices, if desired, to facilitate 'its engagement with an automobile axle for the purpose of elevating the same from a garage floor in assocation with which the device is mounted. i
The member 12' also includes a central bearing aperture 17 toslidably ,receive the derriek post 18 equipped with a socket 19 at its lower end for rotatably seating upon the upwardly projeeting pin`20 carried by the head 6 of plunger 7 to cause the said post end adapted to bear against the said post 18.
Referring now to theembodiment of my invention illustrated in Figures to 7 inpositions relatively to the clusive it will be observed that in thisem- 7 bodiment of: the invention the eylinders 28 constitute a pair of standards* These eylinders are connected atthe 'bottom by a supporting bar 729 and at the top byguides 30 Secured to the same. The cylinders are also connected at the tops. by a' suitable c`o`nneet--'` ing bar 31. In order to locate the cylinders 28 rigidly in parallel alignment, suitable braces 32 are provided as indicated.
Fu'thermore the opening in the floor through which the movable parts of the apparatus project is covered by a plate 33 which is secured to the upper flange 34 of the guides 30. The guides include a cylindrical portion 35 for the pistonrods 36 that carry the pistons 37. The piston rods in this embodiment of my invention constitute the slide standards. These standards are provided with pinholes 38 to receive safety pins (not shown but similar to pins 43 in Figures 5 and 7) to hold the slide standards in position in case the lifting slide line leaks. p
The upper ends of the pist-on rods or slide standards 36 receive the ends 39 of the U- shaped bridge member40, the latter being preferably of channel iron so as to provide i a groove 41 onthe upper side in which the axle of an automobile may be received when the apparatus is used simply as an auto jack. The arms 39 of the member 40, like the `arms 13 of the. member 12, have pin holes 42 to receive the safety pins 43 to support the bridge member on the upper ends of the piston-rod-standards 36 for purpose of height adjustment. v i
In this embodiment of my invention the post`44, which corresponds to the post `.18 in the previous embodiment of my invention, is, provided with a collar 45 that rests in the channel ofthe bridge member 40 and e the post passes through a hearing 46 inthe cylinder supporting bar 31, the hearing 46 being itself provided with bearing balls 47 to constitute a lateral thrust bearing.
Fluid is lead to and bled from the cylinders 28 beneath the pistons 37 by a suitable pipe line 48 controlled by a suitable control valve (not shown), similarly to the pipe line 11 of the preceding embodiment of my invention. i i i i From the foregoing description, taken in connection withthe accompanying drawings, it is thought that the novel details of construction, the manner ofuse and the advantages of my invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which it relates.
