The invention relates to water hydrants and has for its principal object the provision of a construction wherein the casing above the main hydrant valve can be drainedo water when the ymain valve is closed even though the discharge openings of: the hydrant are themselves tightly closed. Another object is to provide a construction having in addition to the main hydrant valve, two additional valves controlled by the same actuating means, one of said valves serving to automatically open a drain conduit when the main valve is closed and the other serving to open an air vent in said casing. The construction is, moreover, designed so that upon the opening of the main. hydrant valve the auxiliary' valves are automatically closed, thus resulting in a water tight casing when the hydrant is in operation. Other objects reside in the-features of construction hereinafterpointed out in the detaileddescription of the hydrant.

f The hydrant t preferably comprises the outer casing 1,v the lower half of which is adapted to be buried in the ground and connected to a water supply main at the inlet end 2. The portion of the casing projecting above the ground is provided with one or more lateral ldischarge openings 3 adapted to be closed when not in use by the caps 1. For closing the upper end of the casing there is a top portion 5 preferably fornnedof` a separate casting secured to the main casing by the bolts 6. The top portion is provided with a threaded aperture 7 in alignment with the longitudinal axis of the casing in which is secured a bushing 8 provided with internal threads 9. This bushing is provided with a lateral flangelO, an upwardly extending cylindrical portion 11 and a depending cylin drical portion 12, the latter having an inwardlyprojecting flange 13 forming a valve seat 14.
15 is the controlling member for the hydrant and comprises an internal and externally threaded portion 16, a cap portion 17 having an annular recess 18 therein and provided at the top with a. suitable wrench-hold longitudinally of the outer casing. At the lower end of the actuating member the threaded portion 16 is formed with an annular bevelled surface 21 adapted to bear against the annular seat 14 when. the actuating member is screwed down, thereby forming atightseal preventing leakage through the threads of the bushing. Vhen the actu'- ating member is not seated upon the annular seat 14, the casing isvented to the atmosphere, this being accomplished by providing a loose it between the exterior threads of the actuating member 15 and thev interior threads of the bushing 8,.
At the lower end of the stem 2O the main hydrant valve 22 is cairied and when in its 75 upper position is adapted to seat upon the annular valve seat 23 projecting inwardly from the casing. As specifically illustrated, there is an elbow connection 24C secured to the main casing 1 by means of the bolts and 80 nuts 25 extending between the adjacent flanges 26 and 27. The valve seat comprises a ring 28 clamped betweenthese flanges and threadedly secured to a second member 29,
the latter having the annular bevelled surface 30 forming the seat proper.
In order to darain the water from the casing when the valve 22 is closed, the valve seat member is provided with the drain passage 31 leading from. a point within the casing 90 to the space between the adjacent flanges. For closing this drain passage there is a yoke 32 pivotally 'Connected at 33 to the niem-y ber 29 and provided with an insert 34 of suitable material registering with the openings of the drain passage into the casing. Mounted upon the valve 22 is an upwardly extending member 35 having a shoulder 36 adapted to engage the yoke 32 and to raise the same above the drain conduit whenever the valve 22 is fully seated. Vhen, however, the valve is opened by lowering the valve stem 20, the yoke 32 falls by gravity and closes the drain conduit, the pressure of the incoming water serving to maintain a tight seal.
With the construction as above described, it will now be apparent that whenever the main hydrant valve is closed both the drain conduit. 31 and the air vent through the '110 threads 9 are open thereby insuring a complete drainage of the outer casing even when the hydrant caps 4 are tightly closed. Upon the opening of the hydrant valve, however, by the rotation ofthe member l5, the yoke 32 is allowed to close the drain conduit 31 and the air vent is also closed by the seating of the shoulders 2l on the annular seat 14 and in this manner the casing is maintained Water tight Whenever the hydrant is in operation.
It should also be noted that by reason of the double threading of the actuating member 15, a very quick motion is imparted to the valve 22 by the rotation of the cap. i
In the modification illustrated in Figure 3 the bushing 8 is provided With a bore 37 eX- tending from the exterior thereof to the space between the depending cylindrical portion 12 and the threaded stem 20. This bore serves as an air vent and is closed Whenever the bevelled surface` 2i contacts with the seat 14.
That I claim as my invention is l. In a hydrant, the combination of an outer casing having a valve seat therein provided with a drain conduit, a hydrant valve movable longitudinally of said casing, a yoke pivotally mounted on said valve seat and adapted to seal said drain conduit, a shoulder on said valve engaging and unseating said yoke when said hydrant valve is closed, a rod extending longitudinally of said casing, a rotatable member engaging said rod and threadedly engaging said casing with a loose fit to provide an airvent for the latter, and a seat for receiving said rotatable member forming a seal therewith for closing said vent when said hydrant valve is opened.

In a. hydrant, the combination of an outer casing having an air vent and having'y a lateral discharge opening, a closure for said discharged opening, an annular seat secured to said casing, a rotatable member threadedlyA engaging the top portion of the casing and engageable with said seat to seal said air vent, a rod extending through said annular seat having threads engaging' said rotatable member, said threads' being of opposite hand to said first mentionedV threads, a valve secured to said rod, an annular valve seat on said casing and a drain conduit, a yoke piv otally supported on said valve seat, a closure member on said yoke adapted to seal said drain conduit, and a member carried by said valve adapted to engage said yoke When the hydrant valve is closed whereby said closure member is unseated from said drain conduit.
3. In a hydrant, the combination With a casing having an inlet, a drain opening and an air vent, of a valve controlling said inlet, a yoke pivotally mounted on said casing and forming a closure for said drain opening, a shoulder on said valve engaging and unseating said yoke when said valve is closed, a rod connected to said valve extending Within said casing, and an actuating member for said rod rotatably and tlireadedly engaging the casing and controlling said air vent.

5. In a hydrant, the combination with a casing having an inlet opening, a drain opening and an air vent, of a valve controlling the said iniet opening, a member pivotally mounted upon said casing and forming a closure for said drain opening, means operable upon movement ol said valve to control the mem4 ber aforesaid, a rod connected to said valve and an actuating member: for said valve connected to said rod rotatably and threadedly engaging the casing, said actuating member having an extension operable in the valve opening position of the actuatingl member to seal said air vent.
