PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER HULSE, 0F FLOURNOY, CALIFORNIA.
ROAD SCRAPER.
Application filed August 3, 1927. Serial No. 210,852.
The present invention relates to a road scraper and has for its principal object to provide in combination a wheeled frame structure and a road scraper element proper and means connecting the two so that they may be swung in relation to each other. 7 Another very important object of the invention lies in the provision of means between the wheeled frame and the scraper element for holding the same in different adjusted positions in relation to each other.
A still further very important object of the invention resides in the provision of a road scraper of this nature which is exceedingly simple in its construction, comparatively 1neXpensive to manufacture, strong and durable, thoroughly efficient and reliable in op eration, easy to manipulate, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which 1t is designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the road scraper embodying the features of my inven tion, and, t
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section taken substantially on the line 22 of F 1gure 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the numeral 5 denotes a U-shaped .frame which is mounted on an axle structure 6 disposed transversely of the intermediate portions of the sides thereof. On the extremities of the U shaped frame 5 there are engaged U-bolts 7. On the extremities of the axle structure 6 there are journ'aled wheels 8. A scraper blade 9 extends transversely and is curved along its vertical dimension as is apparent in Figure 5 and has forwardly disposed side extensions 10. A tongue 11 extends forwardly from the blade 9 at the center and upper edge thereof and is rigidly secured. thereto as are also braces 12 which converge forwardly toward each other and the forward ends of the braces 12 and the tongue 11 are secured together by means of plates 14 which provide a clevis receiving structure or may be attached to any suitable draft means which does not form the essence of the present intion thereof.
vention. Thus it will be seen that the blade 9 may be swung in relation to the frame 5 since the U-bolts 7 are engaged therewith by means of nuts 15 and will rotate in the extremities of the frame 5. A notched quad-- rant 16 is mounted on the rear portion of the tongue 11 and has a bracket 17 associated therewith to which is pivotally engaged as at 18 a lever 19 having a detent 20 engageable with the notched quadrant 16 so that the lever may be held in diflferent posit-ions. A curved arm 21 extends rearwardly from the tongue terminating above the bight portion of the frame 5 and at its rear extremity has journaled a sheave 22. A chain 23 is engaged as at 24 with the center of the bightportion of the frame 5 and is trained over the sheave 22 and engaged with an intermediate portion of the lever as at 25. Obviously, by swinging the lever 19 the angle of the scraper blade 9 may be changed in respect to the road as may be desired. Springs 27 are anchored to the blade 9 and to the frame 5 and tend to maintain the chain 23 taut.
It is thought that the construction, utility, operation, and advantages of this invention will now be quite apparent to those skilled in this art without a more detailed descrip- The present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in detail merely by way of example since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description. It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. In combination, a wheeled frame, a scraper blade transversely of the front of the frame, means for rockably mounting the scraper blade on the front of the frame, an arm extending rearwardly from the blade, a sheave journaled on the rear extremity of the arm, a chain fixed to the rear of the frame and trained over the sheave, a lever, and means for rockably mounting the lever on the blade, the chain being engaged with the lever.
2. In combination, a U-shaped frame, an axle structure transversely of the legs of the U-shaped frame, wheels journaled on the axle of the arm, a lever, means for pivotally structure, U-bolts rotatably engaged in the mounting the lever on the scraper blade and extremities of the frame, a scraper blade en a chain connected to anintermediateportion 10 gaged by said U-bolts and extending tran of the lever trained over the sheave and fixed 0 versely across the front of the U-shaped to the bight of the frame.
frame, an arm extending rearwardly from In testimony whereof- I affix my signature. the scraper blade, a sheave on the rear end WALTER HULSE.
