nurnrcnrnre :anconn BOOK.
Application filed August 15, 1925. Serial No. 50,383.
My invention relates to improvements in duplicating record books, and has particular reference to books in which entries of transactions are made, partly or wholly, in duplicate, the sheets of the books being provided with portions which are detached after the entries have been made, while the undetached portions remain bound in the book form as permanent complete records.
One object of my invention is to provide a center bound book which will open flat, each page having associated therewith a detachable portion upon which an abstract or copy of the record is written simultaneously with the entries made on the permanent leaves of the book, whereby, when all of said portions are detached, a relatively small record book remains.
Another object resides in providing a record book having detachable portions, each associated with a page of the book so arranged that the folding of one portion over the other can be very simply accomplished, and at the same time bring the corresponding printed portions into accurate registry for duplicate writing.
A further object is to provide a book having the characteristic mentioned, both sides of the sheets of which are similarly printed, thus simplifying printing, binding and utilizing all the ages in the book.
Other ol ijects will be apparent from the following specification considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. 1 is a view of an individual sheet of which the book is formed, illustrating the relative positions. of the printed matter therein.
Fig. 2' is a perspective view showing the book opened and with the first sheet of the book turned nearly to writing osition.
Fi 3 is a plan view of the 00k illustrating t e same in position for making entries therein.
Fig. 4 is a plan view showing the detachable portion removed from section A of The book comprises a cover 10 to which are bound a plurality of sheets, shown in detail in Fig. 1. The sheets are preferably cenany size up to the combined width trally stitched ito the cover, thus forming double the number of leaves as sheets used.
. When the book is open, by turning back the front cover and first leaf, as shown in Fig. 4, the page left of the center binding line 11 comprises section A and a detachable abstract section 0. Section G is printed to correspond with the printing on portion 12 of section A, and when said section C is folded on Weakening line 13 the printing thereon registers, or Will coincide with the printing on portion 12. The opposite or facing page, at the right of line 11, comprises printed section B, which with section A makes a complete record form for permanent preservation in the book. The reverseside of section C being provided with a carbon or other duplicating coating D, it will be seen that when said section C has been folded to writing position the data written thereon will be copied on portion 12. .When sections A and B have been filled out, section C may be detached and will contain an abstract only of the whole record.
The obverse side of each leaf, at the right of the binding line 10, comprises a section B and a detachable section 0, while on the reverse side of each sheet opposite said sections, respectively, are sections A and carbon coating D. Upon turning each page to the left, the section A on the reverse thereof becomes the obverse on the left of line 11 with section C folded thereover, as will be obvious from Figs. 2 and 4.
t will be seen that when all the sheets have been used the bound leaves of the book will be reduced in size, in accordance with the size of the sections 'C. The covers 10 are made of material that may be easily broken on weakening lines 13, or cut to correspond to the size of the remaining sheets, thus reducing the size of the book for convenient handling and filing. In the form shown, the sections C are smaller than sections A, but it will seen that the detachable section C may be of of the two open pages or sections A and B, and the unattached lateral edge of section C may fall at any point between the perforated line of fold 13 and'the lateral edge of the section B.
Since both sides of the leaves are used the book will be only half as thick as a book of be readily similar capacity, bound at the center, but having the sheets printed on one side only, and that it will be no thicker and only one-half as wide as books in use at present of corresponding capacity, but which are bound at the end. It will also be obvious that only one-half as much paper will be required in printing my books as compared with the prior art books mentioned.
The folding of the section C over section A is performed by one hand by the same operation by which the sheet is turned, it being necessary merely to place the thumb on section B near line 11 and with the fingers on section 0 draw the sheet upwardly and to the left. The section C can thus be readily folded on line 11 to the position of section A. shown in Fig. 3. The reverse of section C being provided with a carbon coating or other duplicating material, no loose carbon paper is necessary.
Although I have shown one form of my invention for the purpose of illustration, it will be apparent that changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I do not wish to be restricted to the specific embodiment shown except where limitations thereto appear in the ap ended claims.
iat I claim is:
1. A book comprising a plurality of center bound sheets each having printed matter on both sides thereof, and a pair of detachable transfer portions associated with each sheet of the book, and each transfer portion having printed matter on one side thereof corresponding to a portion of the printed matter on the page on the reverse side of said sheet.
2. A book comprising a plurality of sheets bound in the center, each sheet forming two leaves of the book, each sheet having printed matter on each side thereof, the printing of adjacent facing pages co-operating to form record blanks, and a pair of detachable portions on each sheet, one being associated with each record blank for recording an abstract of the data supplied thereto, each of said portions being folded over a portion of the contiguous left hand-page when in writing position.
3. A book containing a plurality of sheets all printed alike, stitched together down the center forming a book of double the number of leaves as sheets used, each leaf consisting of a detachable section printed on the obverse side of the page, and a part of a record section printed on the reverse side of the page, the two sections beirlg defined by a vertical line of weakening extending transversely across the sheet, by means of which line of weakening the folding of said detachable seetlon to superimposed position with said part of the record-section is facilitated, the observe side of the next succeeding page being printed for alinement and co-operation with the said second section to constitute a complete record form, and a cover provided with weakening lines to break off flush with the sheets after said detachable portions are removed.
4. A book containing a plurality of sheets stitched together down the center forming a book of double the number of leaves as sheets used, each leaf consisting of a detachable portion and a permanent portion, the detachable portion being printed on the obverse side of the page, the reverse side of said detachable portion being carbon coated, the reverse side of each permanent portion having a printed section corresponding to the printing on the detachable portion, the remainder of said reverse side of said permanent section and the observe side of the next succeedin Y permanent portion comprising a printed blank arranged for alinement with the printed side of the detachable section when the latter has been folded to bring the coated side thereof into contact with the reverse side of the corresponding permanent portion of the sheet whereby data written on said detachable portion when in folded relation will be transferred to the permanent blank and form a part of the full permanent record subsequently written thereon.
5. A book containing a plurality of sheets printed on both sides and stitched together down the center forming a book of double the number of leaves as sheets used, the printing on corresponding sides of said sheets being similar, the printing on the reverse side of one sheet and on the obverse side of the next succeeding sheet being different but in alinement when the book is opened and constituting a permanent record book, and a detachable portion secured to each sheet adapted to be folded over the reverse side thereof and having printing thereon corresponding to the printing on the coincidin portion of said reverse side of said sheet, the reverse side of said detachable portion having a carbon coating by means of which a carbon copy of the matter written on said detachable section will appear as a portion of the permanent record written on said permanent record blank.
6. A sheet having printed matter on both sides thereof and having a pair of detachable portions one on each lateral edge of said sheet, one of said portions being coated with transfer material on the obverse and the other on the reverse side of the sheet, each of said portions being foldable over the printed matter of said sheet adjacent the respective coated areas.
7. A book comprising a number of sheets each consisting when unbound of a record section and a pair of detachable transfer portions, one on each side of the sheet, the transfer material of the left hand transfer ortion being on the obverse side of the s eet and of the other portion on the reverse side prising a portion of the sheet to which the of the sheet, said sheets when in book form transfer portion is attached and a. cooperatbeing center bound and folded to bring those ing record portion on the next sheet of the a transfer portions on one side of the binding book.
