METHOD OF AND MEANS FOR SEALING RECEPTACLE S.
Application filed May 28, 1927, Serial No. 195,119, and in Great Britain June 8, 1926.
This invention relates to the securing of' protecting hands particularly in crates,
packing cases and other like receptacles.
Packing cases and the like containing eonli tents of value are protected by means of metal bands secured around them, the object of these bands being to prevent the removal of any parts of the case or crate so that the contents cannot bemade accessible without leaving the evidence that the case has been tampered with.
It has been found, however, that even with the ends of the bandsscaled, it is possible, by carefully removing the nails to remove parts of the crate or case without actually removing or breaking the band and the parts can be replaced without leaving any trace that the case has been tampered with.
The object of the present invention is to provide a method of and means for securing the bands to the cases so that the securing nails or rivets cannot be removed without so damaging the case or crate and the securing band as to ensure detection.
The present invention comprises a method of sealing packing cases or receptacles by bifurcated rivets and bands or strips of metal extending over the cover and sides of the receptacles, consisting in punching from the strip at suitable intervals discs of metal and at the same time forcing such discs of metal into the material of the receptacle. a sufiicient depth to form a spreading device over the edges of which the furcations of the rivet will spread outwardly into the material of the receptacle when driven therein through the punched hole in the band or strip of metal.
The inventionconsists in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims thereof. Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of a sealed packing case or receptacle embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation taken on the line 2-2, Figure 1.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a tool used in carrying my improved method. into practical operation.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
a punch having a wood 7 a distance determined by the position of the shoulder 8 on the punch and s0 forms What may be termed an anvil for spreading in opposite directions into the wood the furcations of the bifurcated rivet 6 when the rivet 6 is driven through the hole in the metal strip 5 into the wood 7. The two furcations of the rivet 6 are thus driven in and spread out inopposite directions in the wood 7 to such an extent that the rivet cannot be withdrawn without damaging the packing case. i
It will, .of course, be clear that the invention is applicable to any case where it is desired to secure a strip of metal to a wooden base in such a manner as to ensure detection if the removal of the securing nails or rivets is attempted.
. I claim 1. A method of sealing receptacles by bifurcated packing cases or rivets and bands or strips of metal extending over the cover and sides of the receptacle, consisting in punching from the strip at suitable intervals discs of metal and at the same time forcing such discs of metal into the mate rial of the receptacle :1 sutlicientdepth to forma spreading device over the edges of which the furcations of the rivet will spread outwardly into the material of the receptacle when driven therein through the punched hole in the band or strip of metal.
2. A receptacle, :1 metal. band extending over the top and sides of said receptacle, and means for sealing the receptacle comprising a metal spreader rigidly embedded in the material of the receptacle in alignment with a hole provided in said metal band and extending partly through said material, and a. bifurcated rivet projecting through said hole with its legs spread on opposite sides of said spreader, the diam- I eter of said spreader being approximately the same as the shank portion of the rivet.
3. A receptacle, a metal band extending through said hole with its legs spread on over the top and sides of said receptacle, opposite sides of said spreader, the diameand means for sealing the receptacle comter of said spreader being approximately prising a sheet metal disc rigidly embedded the same as the shank portion of the rivet.
5 in the material of the receptacle in ,align- In testimony whereof I have hereunto set ment with a hole provided insaid metal my hand. band and extending partly through said material, and a bifurcated rivet projecting 1 V GEORGE A. MOWER.
