UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BERTRAM J'. GOLDSMITH AND EMIL KOEB, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNORS, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO PERFECT WINDOW REGULATOR CORPORATION, OF LONG ISLAND CITYQ NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE. I
wmnow AND noon consrrwcrron.
Application filed August 28, 1924. Serial No. 734,583.
Our invention relates to window and door constructionin which a window is slidable vertically in a suitable frame, the invention being particularly adapted in its application to' vehlcle doors carrying a window of the type specified.
The principal object of the invention is the'production of a simple and unitary de- 'vice which shall contain all the necessaryv mechanism for raising and lowering the window as well as means for holding the door closed, which device maybe shipped and installed as a unit.
A further object of the invention is the production of a device of the character specified which shall be so constructed as to permit the crank or handle for actuating the window to take a position where it will not be apt to interfere with the operator or others. p
Other and further objects and advantages will appear from the accompanying description, the invention consisting in the novel device and parts thereof hereinafter more particularly described and then specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing showing a practical embodiment of the invention:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a vehicle door showing the invention as applied thereto.
Fig. 2- is a horizontal section. taken through the door.
Referring in detail to the of the drawing:
1 indicates the side members of a frame of a door which are provided with guidewa s 2 in which a window or sash 3 is vertical y .slidable, Fastened to the lower edge of the window is a U-shaped channel strip 4. 'Extending horizontally across the frame and fastened to both of the side 'members by suitable screws as shown, or otherwise, is a metallic plate or lock-board 5 provided with a horizontal flange 6 at the upper edge thereof which may be fastened to the window sill (not shown)- Said plate 5 may constitute a portion of. the front wall of the window well into which the window is slidable, the rear wall being indicated at7. The said plate is also provided with a vertical flange 8 engaging the side of the right-hand side member 1.
,8 indica-tes'an annular recess or depression several figures pressed inwardly from the late 5'. Mounted in the depression pre erably centrally thereof is 'an'escutcheon or hearing 9 carrying the hub or shaft of a crank orhandle is pivoted to the inner side of the plate 5 at'the place of the depression 8. Said arm 13 is provided with a roller 14 at the outer end thereof engaging within the channel 4. Springs 15 are also provided, the inner ends 0 which are secured to a hook 16 fastened to the inner wall of the depression 8 or pressed out of the metal thereof, the outer ends of said springs being fastened to the outer end of the arm 13. Said springs exert an u ward effort on the arm 13 and consequent y assist in raising the window. To raise or lower the window the crankor handle 10 is rotated, motion being transmitted through pinion 11, toothed segment 12, operating arm 13 and roller 14 which rides in the channel 4. The mounting of the escutcheon 9 and handle 10 in the depression 8 outwardly of the general plane of the plate 5 is desirable as it prevents these parts from interfering with the operator or catching onthe clothes of persons and also places the pivotal support for the arm 13 closely adjacent to the plane of the window 3.
On the right-hand side of the plate 5 we mount a handle 17 the shank of which is indicated at 18 and which is pivoted to said plate as indicated. Secured to the lower end of the shank is a latch bolt actuator 19 adapted to extend through a slot in the righthand side member 1 and through a slot in the flange 8, into a keeper housing 20 formed by cuttin out a. portion of the right-hand side mem e1 1. Secured to the plate 5 and .to the latch bolt actuator is a spring 21 which said spring, into the keeper housing 20 thereby retaining the door in closed position. To retract the latch bolt within its housing whereby the door may be opened, the handle 17 is actuated against the action of the spring 21, whereby the latch bolt will be forced back into its housing against the action of the spring 25 by the member 19. As soon as the handle 17 is released, however, the spring 21 forces it back into first position and the latch bolt is then projected outwardly by the action of its sprin 25.
After the device has been installed the forward portion of the door may be covered by any suitable cover or upholstery which is indicated at 27.
What we claim as our invention is 1. In a device of the character described, a frame provided with side members, a window slidable therein, a metallic plate secured to one of said side members and provided with a projecting portion removed from the plane thereof, mechanism for raising and lowering said window positioned upon the outer face of said projectin portion and a handle mounted in said depression and associated with said mechanism for actuating the same.
2. In a device of the character described, a frame provided with side members, a window slidable therein, a metallic plate secured to one of said side members and provided with a. depressed portion integral therewith, an operating arm engaging the window and pivoted to a wall of said depression, a handle mounted in said depression and means connecting said handle and said operating arm.
3. In a device of the character described, a frame provided with side members, a window slidable therein, a plate secured to one of said side members and provided with a. depression therein, an operating arm engaging the window and pivoted to a wall of said depression, an escutcheon mounted in said depression, arotatable handle mounted therein, means connecting said handle and said operating arm and a spring urging said arm upwardly on its pivot and secured to the de pressed portion of said plate.
4. In a device of the character described, a frame provided with side members, a window slidable therein, a metallic plate secured to said side members and provided with a depression therein pressed out of the metal thereof, an operating arm pivoted to said plate and engaging the window, a handle mounted in said depression, means connecting said handle and o crating arm, a hook carried by the depresse portion of said plate and a spring fastened to said hook and said arm and urging said arm upwardl 5. In a device of the character escribed, a frame provided with two side members, a window slidable in said side members, a metallic plate extending across the frame and attached to said side members and being formed so as to engage two surfaces of one of said side members, said metallic plate being provided with a depression therein, means mounted on said plate for raising and lowering the window and an actuating handle mounted, within said depression and connected to said means.
