Application filed March 12, 1927. Serial No. 174,851.
This invention relates to a spool or reel of sheet material; and has for its object to con-- struct the heads of the reel so that the same may be stacked. vertically "with their axes out of alignment without the pile tumbling.
A further object of the invention is to attach separate members to the outer surface of each of the spool heads of a dimension to present their outer portions in a single plane at right angles to the axis of the spool to support the head of the adjacent spool so. that the axes of the adjacent spools will be parallel even tho out of axial alignment. A still further object of the invention is to provide radially-disposed ribs located adjacent the reinforced periphery of the head of a dimension so that their outer surfaces will be in substantially the same plane as the reinforcement of the periphery of the head so that the spools may be stacked vertically .end to end with their axes in staggered relation.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a vertically disposed stack of spools showing the same with their axes staggered one relative to the other and yet the spools are supported in such a-waythat their axes are allvertical to the supporting base and there is no danger of the stack tumbling.

attached to the outer surface of the heads adjacent the peripher thereof to extend the bearing surface of tl iis reinforced edge to obtain such result; and the following is a detailed description of the present embodiment of this invention and showing one means by which these advantageous results I ma be accomplished \Fith reference to the accompanying drawings, 10 designates the body portion of a spool or reel having heads 11 attached thereto in an suitable manner. Each of these heads 1s of sheet metal construction with its periphery suitably reinforced by deflecting the same outwardly as at 12 which may be in 'the form of a roll, as illustrated in Figures 3 and 6, or in the form of a right-angularly extending flange 13, as illustrated in Figure 8. This reinforced periphery provides a relatively narrow bearing surface which is insufficient to support the spools in a vertical stackwith their axes in staggered relation, andin order to prevent one spool when placed upon the top of another from inclinin its axis to the vertical, I have provided ra ially-extending supportin ribs 14, the ends 15 of whichare positione adjacent the reinforced edge 12, the ribs being of sufiicient length to present the desired surface required.
These separate ribs are attached to the outer surface of the heads b spot welding, riveting or in any other suita le manner and are positioned ins aced relation about the surface of the hea in a number to acco'mplish the desired result. The ribs present a portion of their outer surface 16 in substantially the same plane as the outer surface of the reinforced edge 12 wherebyan enlarged surface at right angles to the axis of the spool is presented for the stacking of 'thereels in vertical relation without the necessity of aligning the axes of adjacent spools with each other.
Each of the ribs 14 is of angle iron, as
illustrated in Figure 4, but if desired the located in substantially the same plane as the reinforcing vedges or below the same so as not to interfere with the end-to-end position of the spools in being vertically stacked one upon the other.
' In some instances, instead of using radially disposed ribs I may provide an annular member which extends inwardly to increase thebearing surface of the head and presents sufficient support for the positioning of the spools one upon the other for the purposes vheretofore mentioned. A flange portion is secured to the annular member to nest' within the flange 13 on the head to assist in supporting the same and holding it in position.
It will be seen that I have provided a construction by which spools may be stacked one upon the other without danger of tum; bling even though the spools are slightly staggered, which is found to be of great advantage in practice for storage and the like.
The foregoin description is directed solely towards t e construction illustrated,
but I desireit to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting1 to all the mechanical changes to which t e device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only-bythe terms of the appended claims.
I claim: 1
1. A sheet metal reel comprising a body having a head at each end, each of said heads havin'gits periphery outwardly de flected to stiffen the same, and separate members attached to said heads adjacent "and inwardly of the periphery thereof and of a dimension to present a portion in substantially the same plane as theedge of said deflected periphery whereby the reels may be stacked vertically end-to-end with their axes in staggered relation without tumbling.
2. A sheetmetal reel comprising a body having a head at each end, each of said heads having its periphery outwardly deflected to stiffen the same, and separate radi- .ally disposed members attached to the outer surface of said heads adjacent the periphery thereof having portions in the same plane as said deflected periphery, whereby the reels may be stacked vertically end-to-end with their axes in staggered relation but parallel to each other.

A sheet metal reel comprising a body having a head at each .end, each of said heads having its periphery and portions about the center outwardly deflected to stiflen the same, and separate radially-extending members attached to the outer surface of the heads positioned adjacent the peri hery and in substantially the same plane wlth the outer edge thereof to prevent the tilting of adjacent reels when vertically stacked end-to-end.

A reel comprising a body having a sheet metal he adrat each end, each of said heads having its periphery outwardl de flected to stiffen the same, with ra ially extending towards sai periphery and terminating at a distance therefrom, and supporting means (portions extending outwardly extending inwardly from the said peripheral ortion of the said heads, and having a caring surface in the plane of the outer surface of said deflected peri hery.
5. A reel comprising a sheet metal head at each end, each, of said heads having its periphery outwardlydeflected to stiffen the same, with radially extending portions extending outwardly towards said periphery and terminating at a distance therefrom, and supporting means extending inwardly from the said ripheral portion of the said heads, and having a hearing surface in the plane of the outer surface of said deflected periphery, the outer surfaces of the said supporting means lying in substantially the same plane as the outer surfaces of the said peripheries so as to permit said reels to be verticall stacked end-to-end .with their axes out 0 line but substantially vertically disposed to the supporting base. I

A reel comprising a body having a sheet metal head at each end, each of said heads having its periphery outwardl deflected to'provide a raised surface, ra ially extending portions formed on the said heads, said portions terminating at a distance from the periphery thereof, and radially disposed in inwardly from theperipheries thereof, said ribs being interposed between the said radially extending portions.
7. A reel comprising a body having a sheet metal ,headat each end, each of said heads having its periphery outwardl deflected to provide a ralsed surface, ra ially extending portions formed 'on the said heads, said portions terminating at a distance from the periphery thereof, and-radially disposed ribs mounted on the said heads and extendin inwardly from the peripheries thereof, said ribsbeln interposed between the Said radially exten ing rtions, the upper surfaces of the said ri the same plane as the upper surface of .the said peripheries;

A reel comprising a body having heads at its ends, the peripheryrof each of said heads being flanged, stiffening means formed on the heads and extending towards said flange but terminating at a distance therefrom,.and a plurality of bearing members extending inwardly from said flange and in the plane with the edge thereof.
10. A reel comprising a body having heads at its ends, the periphery of each of said heads being flanged, stiffening means formed on the heads and extending towards said flange but terminating at a distancev there-- from, and a plurality of bearing members extending inwardly from said flange and in the plaretherewith, said bearin members being interposed between the sai stiffening means and providing'a single plane surface whereby a plurality of the reels may be vertically stacked.
