Description

l.- BAWDEN.
Fire- Place Grate.
N0 167 426 Patented Sent.7,1875.
- ATTDRHEYS.
MPETEHS. PHQTO-UTHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON D C JOHN BAWDEN, OF FREEHOLD, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-PLACE GRATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,426, dated September 7, 1875; application filed July 17, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BAWDEN, of Freehold, in the county ot Monmouth and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Fire-Place Grate, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a top view, and Fig. 2 a vertical transverse section on the line 0 c, Fig. 1, of my improved fire-place grate.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention will first be fully described in connection with drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, A represents a fire-place basket of the usual shape and material, which is cast at its grate-supporting bottom part with a longitudinal connecting-bar, B, about midway between the front and rear parts of the bottom, and parallel to the rear bar of the same. The bar B is provided with a central semicircular supporting part, a, that extends toward the rear of the fire-place, for preventing the grate C from tilting toward the rear of the fire-place. A central eye, I), of the supporting-bar B, allows the introduction of the central bottom hook d of the grate, which hook serves as pivot-point for shaking the grate, and also as hinge-support for tilting the same. A front lip, c, of the grate rests on an inside projecting shoulder or lip, f, of the bottom frame A, until, by inserting a handle into a perforated lug, g, of the grate, the contact of the lips may be interrupted, and the grate be shaken from one side to the other for dropping the ashes, or tilted in downward-inclined position for discharging the remaining ashes and coal.
The grate is readily replaced into position by re-establishing the connection of the lips. The grate can only tilt in front of bar A, for discharging the ashes readily and conveniently into the ash-pan.
The operating of movable grates in open fire-places is in this manner greatly facilitated and rendered more convenient.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a fire-place grate having the central projection a, to prevent the grate from being dumped at the rear, the combination, with the pivoted grate 0, having recesses at the sides of part c, of the grate-frame A, having recess at either side of projection f, as shown and described, whereby said grate may be depressed at the front whenever moved either to the right or left.
JOHN BAWDEN.
