J. T. STONEY DEVICE FOR EXTRACTING CORE REENFORCING WIRES FROM CASTINGS- PM I I I I II I Patented June 12, 1928.
7 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN T. STOREY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
DEVICE FOREXTBACTING CORE REENFOBICING WIRES FROM CASTINGS.
Application filed. January 31, 1927. Serial No. 164,993.
' stiff reenforcing wires bent to conform to the shape of the core member and extending from end to end thereof. The main difiiculty in. employing such reenforcing wires is that the wires are exceedingly diflicult to remove from the casting, due to the fact that as they are withdrawn from the tortuous passage in the casting the wire must be progressively bent to conform to the pas sage as it is being withdrawn.
The present invention has for its object to provide a simple and efi'ectivemeans for quickly extracting core reenforcing wires from a casting.
A further object is to provide means for simultaneously pulling the core wires from opposite sides or ends of the casting sothat it is not necessary to clamp the casting against movement while the wires are being extracted.
Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention may be said to comprise a device as illustrated in the accompanying drawings hereinafter described and particularly set forth in the appended claims, together with such variations and modifications thereof as will be apparent to one skilled in the art. to which the invention appertains.
Reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the machine.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the machine.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation ofone of the wire reenforced core members.
Referring to the accompanying drawings the wire extracting mechanism is mounted upon an elongated supporting stand 1 which is provided at the center thereof with a supporting portion 2 upon which the casting is adapted to rest while the wires are being extracted. At the ends thereof the stand s provided with supporting portions 3 upon which are mounted longitudinally disposed fluid pressure cylinders 4 which are provided with pistons 5 to which are connected piston rods 6 which extend through the inner heads of the cylinders and have attached thereto heads 7 slidably mounted on longitudinal guide rods 8 which extend from the cylinder supporting portions 3 of the stand to adjacent the casting supporting portion 2. Each of the two heads 7 has a pair of axially aligned transversely disposed fluid pressure cylinders 9 mounted on opposite sides of the center thereof. Each of the cylinders 9 is provided with a piston 10 to which is attached a piston rod 11 extending through the inner head of the cylinder and hail ing a wire-gripping head 12 at its inner enc.
Fluid pressure cylinders 4 are controlled by a suitable controller 13 which operates the usual four-way valve to simultaneously admit pressure to the outer ends of the cylinders and exhaust pressure from the inner ends thereof to simultaneously shift the heads 7 inwardly adjacent a casting on the supporting portion 2 or to supply pressure simultaneously to the inner ends of the cylinders at to shift the head 7 outwardly away from the casting. lVhen the heads 7 are held adjacent the casting, the core reenforcing wires which project through openings at opposite sides or ends of the casting are positioned directly between the gripping heads 12 connected t the pistons of the cylinders 9 so that when the pistons 10 are actuated to move the heads 12 inwardly the wires projccting from each end of the casting are gripped between the heads 19 and will be stripped from the casting when the gripper supporting heads 7 are simultaneously moved away from the casting by the admission of pressure to the inner ends of the cylinders 4.
In the operation of the machine the casting is placed upon the supporting portion 2 of the stand and the controller 13 is turned to a position to admit pressure to the outer testes i permit the sand to pass through them. but prevent the ,p assage or core reentorcing rods.
iorinov ng one of said support;
to be simultaneously moved inwardly and held at the end of the stroke adjacent the opposite ends of the casting. This positions the wire gripping heads 12 on opposite sides of the wires pro ecting through the openings at the ends of the casting and thecontroiler 14; is turned to ,a-positi on .to admit pressure to the outer ends of the cylinders 9 causing the heads "12 to grip the wires between them. The controller l3 is then turned to the reverse position causing pressure tobe exhausted from the outer ends oi ecy dei's and admitting pressure to the inner :ends thereof "to simultaneously ann e gripper heads 7 outwardly away tro ?'tl ficas ns its 15- i' 'iolfme' in the upp s n st 11, 'llbe'tween thecentral supporting porin Ma th 11 Por i n 3 thereof fled "jflli li tlie "heads 7 have been withdrawn a suflicientdistance from the casting to free the wires therefrom the controller 14 is moved to reverse position causing the pist is 10to move outwardly releasing the wiresso that they tallinto the chute 15 are delivered to the rear side of the iia ll ne- 'gaiid chutes 16 may be provided beneath the central supporting portion 2 to catch d discharged from the casting and these niay be provided with screen 17 which The sand' may be extracted from the interior of the castings while on the support 2 by niean's of a vibrator machine 18 proi 'ided with an arm' 1 9 carrying the vibratfii' g mechanism which is adapted to beswung into position over the casting and engaged therewith to shake the sand from the te n f f r thus described my invention, i li l c a ii is i I 1 A device for extracting reenforcing W e rom h new a ast g mp i in a Wire" gripper, a support for the wire 2 11 1 913 flQ up llQ f for th as ing, mean to a d d from the other, and means for actuating sa d wir a ii i e I 2; it for extracting i eenforcing Y v I 1 l i w r s ir in thecore oi a casting comprising wires from the core of'a' casting comprising a support for a casting slides movable to ward and from opposite sides of said support, wire grippers carried by each slide, means for sin'iultane'ously moving said slides, and means for simultaneously1novinn said wire grippers.

A device ior extracting rcenforcing wires from the core of a casting comprising mounted onthe staiid between said cylinders, oneconnected to the piston of each cyl nder, pair of axially aligned transversely disposed fluid pressure cylinders on each head, wire gripping members con nected to the pistons "of said last mentioned cylinders, means for simultaneously actuati g said longitudinally disposed cylinders, and for simultaneously actuating said transversely disposed cylinders.
7.A device for erttraeting" reen'forcing transversely disposed'fluid"pressure cylinwires from thecore of a casting comprising a siipportingstand having aeentrally disposed'portion adapted to support ,a casting, heads slid ably mounted on the standior mov'ement into anchout of engagement with the cas iniea'ns for simultaneouslymoving'the heads into and outof engagement with the casting, and .wire gripping means carried by said heads.

A device for "extracting reenforcing wires from the core of a casting comprising on each of said a support for a casting a fluid pressure cylinder, a member connected to the pietonno f sa d cylinder an dTm'ovabletoward and or from a casting on the support, wire gripping means carried by said member, and means for actuating said gripping means.
11. A device for extracting reenforcing wires from the core of a casting comprising a support for a casting, a fluid pressure cylinder, a member connected to the piston of said cylinder and movable toward and from a casting on the support, wire griping means carried by said member, and Fiiid pressure operated means for actuating said gripping means.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto affix my signature.
