This invention relates to an improvement in manifolding books or pads and with respect to its more specific features to a book or pad especially adapted for use with autographic registers.

An object of the invention is to provide in a book of the class described, an arrange ment of leaves in sets, such that a relatively large number of copies maybe made at a single operation, with a relatively small number of transfer leaves.

Another object is to provide an arrangement such that a material increase in the number of copies to be made at a single operation is obtained without requiring a proportional increasein the number of transfer leaves.

Another object is to provide a book'having sets with a relatively large number of leaves, and the transfer leaves so arranged that a set may be quickly and easily interleaved with the transfer leaves for making a set-up. i

Another object is to provide an arrangejment of leaves in sets, each composed of a plurality of leaves, such that the entire set or one or more of a set may be removed from the book at a single operation.

Other objects of the invention will be in part obvious and in'part pointed out hereinafter.

The invention accordingly comprises an article of manufacture possessinglthe features, properties, and the relation of 'elements which will be exemplified in the article hereinafter described and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in'the claims.

For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects of the invention reference should i be had to the following detailed descrip tion taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:

The improved book may be embodied in different forms and asillustrated it comprises a plurality of sets of leaves adapted for manifold inscription which sets are preferably bound together by a binder or stub, one leaf of each set having a binding extension for this purpose. Each set includes a plurality of leaves pasted or otherwise attached together at their free ends remote from the binder but it is preferred that two sheets be formed from a single stripof paper folded transversely intermediate its length and doubled upon itself to make up the two leaves.

As illustrated in Figures 1, 2, and 3 the sets of leaves include three main leaves which are preferably opaque and one or more auxiliary leaves which are preferably translucent. In this embodiment a strip is folded to form upper and lower leaves. An intermediate leaf is attached to one of them, asfor example the lower leaf at the fold, in any convenient manner, as by pasting.

The auxiliary leaves, which may conveniently be made of tissue, may be attached to the faceof one of the opaque leaves, ordinarily to the undersidethereof.

'Each of the leaves may bear a suitable printedform, if desired, and thesets are preferably numbered, the number appearing upon each leaf.

Referring more particularly to the illustrative embodiments of the invention as disclosed in the drawings, and first to 'the embodiment of Fig. 1, it will be observed that each set of leaves includes an original or upper leaf 1 and a lower or triplicate leaf 2 which are preferably formed by doubling or folding upon itselfa strip of paper of sufficient length to form these two leaves, one

of which, as the lower or triplicate leaf 2, having an extension at'the end of the set opposite the strip fold to provide for binding the sets together into a binding or stub indicated at 18. It will be understood that as ment is preferably made at the upper face of the lower sheet near the fold line and is preferably accomplished by pasting as indicated at 1. The upper or original leaf 1 when in folded position terminates near the binding 18 and at this end thereof a fourth or quadruplicate leaf 5 is attached being preferably pasted to the leaf on the underside thereof as indicated at (i. This lpaf 5 is preferably of material which is sufhciently translucent to permit a manifold inscription made on one side thereof to be read through the leaf. l Two carbon sheets or similar transfer sheets 17 are bound at one'end into the binding or stub 18 so as to be readily interleaved with the leaves of the successive sets as said setfare inscribed and detached. The carbon sheet 17 which lies betwcen'the quadruplicate sheet 5 and the duplicate sheet 3 is double faced so as to transfer the inscription to the sheets at both sides thereof while the carbon sheet 17 which is interposed between the triplicate sheet 2 and the duplicate sheet 3 is provided with transfer material upon the lower side only so it lies in contact with the face of the duplicate sheet. It will thus be seen that each lower sheet of the set will have transfer material in contact with one face thereof so as to receive the manifold inscription when the original inscription is made upon the upper sheet 1. A backing or writing table 18% of manila or similar material preferably underlies the sheets of the book being bound into the stub or binder 18. The under leaf 2 of each set is preferably extended beyond the others to bind the sets to the binding stub 18. Also each leaf of the sets in the different embodiments may be provided with a. weakened transverse line suitably located to facilitate separation of the sheets from the binding stub and from each other as indicated at- 13, 14 and 15.

The form illustrated in Fig' 2 is similar to that of Fig. 1 but in this case the auxiliary or quadruplicate sheet- 7 is attached to the intermediate or duplicate sheet 3. shown, the sheet 7 is preferably pasted to the free end of sheet 3 at the underside thereof so as to underlie the sheet 3. In this form also two carbon sheets are employed being bound into the binding stub 18 as before, but in this case the upper carbon transfer sheet :20 is provided with transfer material only on its lower side while the lower carbon transfer sheet 21 is double faced to contact both with the overlying sheet 7 and the an derlying sheet 2.

In the embodiment of Fig. 3, auxiliary leaves are attached to both the upper and intermediate leaves, and as shown they are pasted to the ends of those leaves at 1'1 and 12 in position to underlie them. This modification will preferably have two double faced carbons 9.2 and 23 bound into the binder 1S and arranged for interleaving with the inscription leaves of the set as shown.

The arrangement between the upper. lower and intermediate sheets, the auxiliary sheets and the carbons in these three iiiodifications, are similar to the relations illustrated, in Figs. 1. 2 and 5 respectively. Thus in Fig. 4 an auxiliary sheet 31 is attached to the under face of the original sheetf2 l and carbons 39 and 4.0 are adapted to be interposed between auxiliary sheets 31 and sheet 25. and between sheet 25 and sheet 26, respectively.

' In Fig. 5 an auxiliary sheet 33 is attached to the under face of the intermediate sheet 25 and a single faced carbon' t'l is superposed on the sheet'25. and a double sheet 12 is int'erposed between the sheet 33 and sheet 26.

In the embodiment of Fig. 6, two auxiliary sheets and 36 are attached, respectively, to the sheets 24 and 25, preferably to underlie them and double faced carbons 43 and 1 1 are interposed as before mentione'd. In each modification the writing upon the upper sheet is transferred directly to the intermediate and lower Sheets and through another transfer medium, as for example, the upper face of one of the double faced ca1'bons,'the writing is also transferred to the under face of the auxiliary sheet, and if this be transparent it is visible directly through the sheet.

Since certain changes may be made in the abovearticle and different; en'ibodiinents of the invention could be made without depart;- ing from the scope thereof. it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying; drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

It is also to he understood that the following claims are intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described.

'Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: i

1. 'A manifolding book composed of sets of leaves, each set'inclu'din'g an upper, a lower, and an int'eri'nediate'leaf connected together at one end, the lower leaves of the sets being bound together at, the end remote from the connection of the leaves of the sets, and a separate leaf carried by one of the other leaves of each set.
