The purpose of the invention is the provision of an im roved handle control mechanism for application to a suction sweeper, and aiparticular object is the provision of 5 such improved handle control mechanism.
An essential object of the invention is in the construction of a handle control mechanism having provision for automatically securing the handle in an upright or storage position. q

A broken section of a suction sweeper casirg is indicated at 10 appropriately secure to which is a pin 11, on which is pivotally mounted handle 'bail 12 carrying an appropriate sweeper operating handle, not shown.
Y Formed integral with or appropriately secured to the lower end of bail member 12 is-a segment 13 providing at its outer edge a. wide or normal "working stroke limit, notch 14 having end limit shoulders 15 and 16, cam lug 17 and storage notch 18.

Foot lever 19 is further provided on its top edge with a spring retaining lug 23 and on its bottom edge withlimit lug 24 to prevent the foot lever rising above itsproper position.
On casing 10 there is a pawl mounting pin 25 on whichis pivotally mounted. pawl .member 26. Nearthe top of pawl member 26 and on the inside edge there is rovided a pawl latch pin recess 27, and on t e outer edge there is provided a double bent lug the side guide portions are indicated as 28 and 29, and the base latch portion is indicated at 30, guide portions 28 and 29 cooperating with segment 13 to insure registry of latchportion 30' with latch- notches 14 and 18. At the bottom extending from the inner edge of pawl 26 is a spring retaining means .31 which is hook-shaped and turned upwardly. I Spring member 32 is adapted to seat on pin 11 and has two outwardly extending arms 33 and 34 adapted to be compressed one toward the other and secured, the one 34 under lug 23 on foot lever 19, and the other 33 on the pawl'spring retainer 31.
The operation of the handle control is that in handle storage position the parts are positioned as in Fig. 1 excepting that the handle and segment are pivotally displaced counterclockwise sufficiently to allow latch 30 to be positioned in storage'notch 18. 1 To bring the handle into normal operative position it is necessary to depress foot lever 19 by application of pressure on operating pin 22, depressing pawl latch pin 21 forcing back pawl 26 as the pin rides over the inner rounded top edge thereof until the pin enters latch pin recess 27 at which time the pawl returns to approximately its original-position under the urge of spring arm 33 and thus pin 21 is latched in recess 27. Now, pressure applied to the handle will cause cam lug 17 to ride over latch base 30 and the handle may be lowered. As lug 17 rides over latch 30 the pawl 26 is forced backward sufiiciently to release pin 21 from recess 27 and the foot lever 19 and pawl 26 are restored to original position excepting that latch 30 rides on the face of segment 13 instead of being seated in one of the notches. 1m
As soon. as the handle is lowered sufficiently to allow latch 30 to fall into the limiting notch 14 the foot lever 19 and pawl 26 are completely restored to position as shown in Fig. 1. On operation ofthe cleaner with the handle control so positioned all parts maintain their positions exceptin the segment which may oscillate throug the are determined by the limits imposed uponlatch 30 by stop shoulders'15 and 16.0f working notch 14. By again depressing foot lever pin 22 the foot lever and pawl will a ain take the positions shown in Fig. 7 an the handle may be lowered to its lowermost limit or to any position intermediate thatdefined by limit shoulder 15 and the lowermost position.
From the last described condition of operation either of two steps may be taken. To
accomplish either, the handle is raised to a nearly vertical position or until cam lug 17 acts to release latch pin 21 from latch pin recess 27, which release is indicated by an audible snap from which .condition further raisin of the handle \villallow latch 30 to drop into notch 18 for a storage position or a lowering of the handle from the snap position will allow latch 30 to enter limiting notch 14.
From the foregoing description it will be seenthat there is provided a convenient ing a relatively stationary member, a pivot mounted thereon and a handle member pniounted on the pivot, a segment, having notches therein, mounted on the handle member, a pawl member pivotally mounted on the stationary member and having a latch portion, the latch portion biased to enter the notches in the segment, a pawl latch pin and means selectively causing engagement or d isengagement of the pawl and pawl latch pin and pawl with each other and allowing or 'on whereby actuation of the pivoted operating means interposes the pawl latch pin in the path of the pawl preventing active handle control coaction of the pawl latch and the notched portions of the segment.
3. A handle control mechanism comprising a relatively stationary member, a handle member pivotally mounted on the stationary member, a segmental member mounted on the handle member, the segmental member having a substantially arcuate edge portion, notch-like recesses in the edge portion of the segment and a cam surface formed on the edge portion of the segment, a pawl pivotally mounted on the stationary member and biased toward the edge portion of the segment, the pawl member having a latch portion actingnormally under influence of the pawl bias to enter the notch-like recesses of the segmental member, means actuable to counteract the pawl bias and to withdraw the pawl latch portion from normal coaction with the notch-like recesses, said means holding the pawl in its withdrawn position and other means comprising the aforementioned cam surface torelease the pawl latch holding means. 7
