Description

Patented Aug. 24,1825.
WITNESSES YLPETERS Pnmo-Lnmmw ER, WASHINGTON D c UNITED STATES TENT QFFIon.
STEPHEN A. MARKER, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF HIS RIGHT TO RANDOLPH FRASER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAFETY-LOOPS FOR CHECK-REINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,109, dated August 24, 1875; application filed July 1, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, STEPHEN A. MARKER, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Loops for Check-Reins; and I 'do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a hook and check-rein, the latter having my improved loop. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my improved loop detached, and Fig. 3 is a similar view of my improved loop in a modified form.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
The object of this invention is to prevent the possibility of the check-rein of a horse becoming detached or slipping out of the hook on which it is looped; and it consists in the construction of an improved loop, and in the combination of said loop with the check-rein and hook, as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawing, A is the check-rein, and B is the hook. Both of these may be of the ordinary construction. 0 is my improved loop, which consists of a sliding sleeve, 0, made of leather, rubber, or any other suitable material, having a projecting perforated lap or flap, d. This is placed upon the check-rein, in the manner shown in Fig. 1-that is, with the lap d pointing toward the hook-and it is ready for use.
In order to use it, I simply slip the checkrein over the hook in the usual manner, taking care, however, to pass the hook through the perforation in flap d, when the check-rein will be secured without any danger of its slipping out, as the loop cannot recede from the hook.
In Fig. 3 is shown a modification of my improvementth at is, instead of having only one perforated lap, d, it has two, placed opposite each other. This will give additional strength to the loop, besides being an additional safeguard against the possibility of the check-rein slipping off.
I am aware that various devices have heretofore been invented and patented for the purpose herein stated; but I am not aware that any device similar to mine has ever been used.
I therefore, having thus described my invention, claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The improved safetyloop for check-reins herein described, consisting of a sleeve, 0, having one or more projecting perforated flaps, d, arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in.
presence of two witnesses.
STEPHEN A. MARKER.
