Application filedseptember 22, 1927. Serial Ho. 281,363.
This invention relates a fastening device especially adapted for use inholding a iireplace stop or front cover in place.
A primary object of the-invention is the.
provision of a fastening deviceof this character whichmay be adjusted at will to vary the effective length thereof within a considerable range and which is simple and cheap to manufacture, having a minimum number of parts. I Y
A further object of the invention is the provision of a vfastening device of this character which includes means for holding the fastening device taut or under tension and for preventing displacement of the parts when the device is being applied.
In carrying out these objects, the invention is susceptible'of a wide range of modification without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the claimed invention; there being shown in the drawings for illustrative purposes a preferred and practical form, in which;
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a fireplace equipped with a cover held in place by this improved fastener, parts being broken out to show theinterior construction,
Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the cover showing the fastener in side elevation,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the fastener shown connected with the inner wall of the fireplace and with the securing elements removed and in juxta-position ready for connection, and
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view showing varying positions of the fastener during locking and unlocking thereof.
In the embodiment illustrated a front cover 1 is shown for a cavity orfire lace (partially shown at 2) in the side wa ls 3 of which the fastening units embodying the invention are designed to be secured.
A pair of fastening units embodying the invention are shown in Fig. 1 as holding the fireplace stop or cover in place, each unit be; 1ng indicated at 10. It is to be understood that the fireplace stop or cover may be of any desired construction, and it is not deemed necessary to describe it in detail here.
Each of the fastening units 10 includes a sixteen gauge soft wire 11 carr mg at one end a stud or pointed nail 12 a apted to be driven into the sidewall at one side of the fireplace, as is shown clearly in Figs. 2'
and Theother end of the wirell is connected withan eye-bolt 13, said wire end be ing passed througlrand wrapped around the eye 14 of said bolt.) This eye-bolt 13 has a lever 15 extended from the eye 14 in a. plane at right angles-to the bolt proper and made integral with the. :eye as is shown clearly in'Fig. 3 and which is ides ned for engagement with the inner face of t e cover 1, as will be presently more fully described.
An adjusting member 16 made in the form of a knob having a:threadedsocket17 for engagement with the threaded v portion of th bolt 13 whichw henscreweglup screw body puts the wire 11 under tension and the lever 15 holds the bolt when screwing up or unscrewing of the knob. This lever 15 turnsto the right and strikes the side wall of the cover on the inside and holds the bolt for screwing up of the knob and it turns to the le-ftand strikes the inside of the cover when the knob is unscrewed.
It willthus be seen that this device is extremely simple, and yet equally as effective as a more complicated apparatus and may be manipulated easily and cheaply. The lever 15 therefore serves not only to hold the fastenin unit under tension and taut, but also ten s to prevent accidental displacement of the adjustin member 16 from a desirable position on the bolt.
It is, of course, understood that the fastening unit above described is duplicated at the other side of the fireplace and securely holds the cover 1 in position.
Without further description it is thought that the features and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art, and it will of course be understood that changes in the form, proportion xand minor details of construction constructed may be resorted to, without departing from having a lever to bear on said cover for holding the member in position when the adjusting member is being actuated.
2. A fastening device for fireplace covers comprising a wire having anchoring means to attach it to a fireplace wall, a threaded member connected with said wire and adapted to extend through a fireplace cover, an internally threaded adjusting member for engagement with said threaded member outside the fireplace cover and means carried by said threaded member to bear on the in side of the fireplace cover for holding the member in position when the adjusting member is being actuated.
3. A fastening device for fireplace covers comprising a wire having an anchoring de vice at one end for attaching it to a fire place wall, an eye-bolt connected with the other end of said wire with the threaded portion thereof adapted to extend through a fireplace cover, an internally screw threaded adjusting member for engaging said eyebolt outside the fireplace cover, and a lever extending at right angles to the body of the bolt for engaging the cover on the inside to hold the bolt in position when the adjusting member is being actuated.
4. Afastening device for fireplace covers comprising an eye-bolt having an arm extending at an angle therefrom, an adjusting member for engagement with the threaded portion of the bolt, and means for connecting the bolt with a fireplace wall.
5. A fastening device for fireplace covers comprising an eye-bolt having a threaded body portion adapted to extend through the fireplace cover, an internally threaded adjusting member for engagement with said threaded portion outside the cover, eye of said bolt having a laterally extending lever to engage the fireplace cover on the inside thereof and hold the bolt when the adjusting member is actuated, and means for anchoring said eye-bolt to one wall of the fireplace.
