Description

J. G Beer-Faucet. N 0. l 6 7 y 04 9 i Patented Aug. 24, I8 75.
'NVENTOR ATTORN EYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JOHN G. ADAM, OF NEWPORT, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN BEER-FAUCETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,049, dated August 24, 1875; application filed June 26, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. ADAM, of Newport, in the county of Campbell and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and valuable Improvementin Beer-Faucets; and I do herebydeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, makin gapart of this specification,`and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a longitudinal vertical section of my beer-faucet, and Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views of -the same.
This invention has relation to beer-faucets; and it consists in the employment of a tap provided with an offset, in combination with a tenoned standard, a slotted follower, and a packing and set-screw, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, A designates a conical tap, which is designed to be driven into one of the heads of a barrel or cask, and which is constructed with a socket portion, a, and a tubular offset, b. The tapering socket portion a receives tightly in it a wooden plug', B, in which is applied in a well-known manner a draw-01T' key, C. The tubular oi'setb is on top of the tap, and receives through it an air-inlet tube, D, which is curved, as shown in Fig. l, and of sufficient length to reach above the liquid in the barrel when forced home therein. Inside of the offset is a shoulder, c, against which is forced a suitable eXpansible packing, e, which prevents leakage ofiiuid or gas. The packing, which may be composed of rings of india-rubber and leather, is compressed in the offset by means of a screw acting on a follower, E, the upper hooked end of which is slotted, and receives a tenon, d, on the end of a standard, F, into which the screw fis tapped. The tenon d prevents displacement of the follower while setting up the screw f. D designates a cylindrical cup on the outer end of the tube D, the conical end gof which is fitted snugly into a corresponding depression made in the follower E. In the end of the cup D a plug, h, is driven and closely packed, which plug has a hole, i, longitudinally through it, closed by a valve, j, which opens inward to admit air, but closes when there is an outward pressure of gas against it, and prevents the escape of gas ortluid through the plug. When the air-inlettube D is partly withdrawn the faucet can be readily driven into a barrel, after which the air-inlet tube is forced back to its place. When the key G is turned for drawing liquor the valve 7' will open and allow air to enter the barrel, and when the iiow of liquor is stopped the' valve j will shut and prevent the escape of gas. By these means I combine the airtap and faucet in a single article.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a beer-faucet, the tap A, provided with the offset b, in combination with the standard F, having a tenon, d, the slotted follower E, packing e, and set-screw j', substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
J OHN GEORGE ADAM.
