This invention relates to rail fasteners, one of the objects being to provide a plate for supporting the rail, this plate having integral means for engaging the outer base flange of-the rail while a detachable and adjustable'key is associated with the plate for engaging the inner flangev of the rail thereby to hold the rail properly'positioned on the plate. i p
A further object is to provide a key and plate cooperating to grip the base flange of the rail with a pressu-re increasingin proportion to the load to which the rail is sub jected. i
A further object is to provide adevice of this character which can be held in place with the minimum number of spikes, all of the spikes being protected against we'ar such as has heretofore taken placedue to thesawing action of the rail or other parts upon the spikes engaged thereby. g With the foregoing and other objects n view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangementof parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the 1nvent-ion herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a metal plate adapted to be placed on a tie T for supporting a rail B. This plate is provided with spike receiving openings 2 near the corners thereof and depending from the plate at the outer sides of the openings are lugs'3 adapted to bite into the tie T so as to present extensive abutments for the spikes S used for holding the plate to the tie. These lugs notonly serve to back the spikes and prevent them from being sawed into by the plate 1 but also serveto hold the plate against creeping on the tie. A further means designed to pre vent creeping is provided in the form of an arcuate rib 4' upon the bottom of the plate 1 adapted to bite into the uppersurface of the tie tlSShOWIIw i Formed on the plate is a transverse series of rail engaging lugs 5 each of which hasa laterally extended head 6 adapted to lap and retain the outer base flange of the rail R mounted on the plate. These lugs are located at one side of the center of the plate. At the other side of the center the plate is providedwith a groove 7 extending thereintofrom the side edge, there being an opening 8 at the inner end of the groove which communicates with another groove 9 formed in the bottom, of the-plate and extending toward thecenter thereof from the opening 8. A key of novel construction is used in connection with the plate 1. Thiskey includes v,aishank 10 provided atone end with upper remote from the jaws is offset downwardly as shown at 13 a distance substantially equal to the thickness of that portion of plate 1 under the groove 7. This end portion has an opening 14: for the reception of a spike S.
In practice the rail R to be fastened to the tie is placed on the plate 1 after said plate has been positioned at the proper point on the tie. The outer base flange of the rail is arranged beneath the heads 6 of the lugs 5 and the plate 1 is then fastened in position by driving spikes S through those openings 2 nearest the lugs 5. Thereafter the key is inserted into the groove 7 so thatjaw 12will pass into the opening 8 and the groove 9 while aw 11 will lap and frictionally engage the inner base flange of the rail R. By driving the key longitudinally the rail will be clamped tightly on the plate 1 and after S is driven through the opening 14; into the tie and the parts are all thus securely ias- As a further means for securing the plate in position additional spikes S can be driven through those openings 3 remote from the lugs 5 although in practice it has been found that these additional spikes are not essential; On the contrary three spikes are all that are actually needed under usual conditions.
Vhere the plate 1 is to be used at curves it. is preferred to provide the same with an integral brace adapted to fit over the outer base flange of the rail and under the head, said brace bearing against the web of the rail as shown in Figure 3. This brace constitutes an additional means for holding the rail against lateral swinging or tilting when subjected to side thrust along curved portions of a track.
What is claimed is:
1. A rail fastener including a plate for supporting a rail, integral lugs thereon for engaging and lapping one base flange of the rail on the plate, there being an aperture extending through the plate, a top groove extending to the aperture from one side of the plate in the top thereof and another groove extending from the aperture toward the center of the plate in the bottom thereof, a key adapted to be seated in the top groove, diverging jaws at one end of the key, one of the jaws being insertible downwardly through the aperture into the bottom groove and the other jaw being movable into engagement with the inner base flange of the raihone end of the key projecting beyond the plate, and means for fastening the plate and the projecting end portion of the key to a tie on which the plate and key are mounted.
2. A rail fastener including a plate, integral lugs thereon for lapping and retaining one base flange of a rail mounted on the plate, there being top and bottom grooves in the plate connected by an apm'turc, a key adapted to be seated in the top groove having diverging upper and lower jaws. the lower jaw being insertible downwardly through the aperture and into the bottom groove, the upper jaw constituting means for lapping and retaining the inner base flange of the rail on the plate, and means for fastening the key and the plate to a tie thereunder.
3. A rail fastener including a rail supporting plate, means integral therewith for engaging the outer base flange of the supported rail. av key insertible through the plate for straddling the plate and the inner base flange of the rail, and means for fastening the key and the plate to a tie thereunder, said. inner base flange and plate being wedged within the key.
