UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMAN L. GREVE, OF BROOKLYN, NEXV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO INTERNATIONAL MAIL- ING TUBE AND WRAPPER COMFEANY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
CARTON.
Application filed. June 12, 1926'. Serial No. 115,578.
My invention relates to shipping cartons made from card-board.
The object of my invention is to provide a carton having two wall portions on each side of the box, the inner wall being made of scrap material cut from the sheet from which the blank of the carton is formed, or from other sheets, to provide a strong and stilt construction at a low cost.
Referring to the drawings which part of this specification:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a blank formed with scored lines and provided with slits to effect an interlocking of the inner side walls of the carton.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a blank strip used to form the middle portion of the side wall and an end reinforcing portion.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a carton made with the blank and strip shown in. Figure 2 as it appears when the box portion of the carton is formed.
Fig. 4 illustrates how the carton is folded.
Fig. 5 illustrates the appearance of the carton when closed.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a modified form of construction.
Fig. 7 illustrates a side strip used with the construction shown in Figure 6.
A, indicates a blank as it is formed to provide the bottom of the carton and the outer end and side walls and the top portions and B, indicates the strip which is used in making the inner side andend wall parts of the box portion of the carton as illustrated in Figures 3 and 4. The blank is provided with scored lines C-C, etc., to assist in tolding the still material, and is also slitted at D -D to provide the inwardly extending side portions D, and with slits E, to permit the end portions l) to interlock with the strips. B which are also provided with slits B for this purpose. The blank is folded as illustrated in Figure 3, the strips B-B respectively connected to the end portions 1), and the end B of each strip being bent on the dotted line B and extending across the carton to form an inner end wall of the box portion of the carton, as will readily be understood.
By this construction a box portion is form a formed having two joints F-F respectively on each side, the overlapping portions of which serve to brace the box adjacent the corners, andwhen the outer side flap portions G-G respectively are folded as shown in Figure 3, a box is provided having double end and side walls which provide a carton having great strength and stillness. The carton is closed by first turning in the end flap portions H-H respectively as illustrated in Figure a and then the top portions I-I which may be tastened together and to the box portion in any manner desired.
In the modified construction illustrated in Figure 6, the end portions of the strips B are dispensed with, the ends of the strips 13 (see Figure 7) extending to the end walls J-J respectively.
Having thus described my claim as new:
1. A collapsible shipping carton formed from a single blank comprising a bottom, end and side walls flap portions integral vith the end walls and overlapping flap portions integral with the bottom extending outside the side walls and over the top of the carton to form a cover, and separable reenforcing strips interlocked with the sides producing a double walled body and bracing the corners of said carton to prevent their collapse at the points of connection between the sides and the strips.
2. A collapsible shipping carton formed from a single blank comprising a bottom end and side walls, flap portions integral with the end walls and overlapping flap portions integral with the bottom extending outside the side walls and over the top of the carton to form a cover, and separable reentorcing strips having slits adjacent. their ends for interlocking connection with the sides when the blank is folded into car ton form. said strips producing a double walled body and bracing the corners at the points of connection between the sides and strips.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature. Y
invention I HERMAN L. GREVE.
