UNITED stares BUnoLr wmrznn, or sHo'niawoon, wi'scoNsm, ASSIGNOR 'ro NORDBERG- MA-N1T FhcTURme; COMPANY, or mewsuknn, Wisconsin, a CGRPORATION or WIS- COMPRESSOR ANDSC'AWENGER' FOR nmsnr. ENGINES:
Applicatiomfiled- October 27, -1924 serianw. 746,163.
Thelin-vention resides in an improved; arrangement in; which ahigh;d1ity. multi-st'ag'e compressor forthe air and ,a lseavenger forv theengine are incorporated-into. a com act and highly efficient construction, in, w ich-,
the elements co-oper-ate in absolute synohro nismin the performance of their? functions, Such a'rrangemen't hasgreatly lessened the cost of constructionof the complex detionanapparatus embodying my inyentiom;
with the relative arrangement of the parts thereofi v a a i r I In thedrawing, the numeraL l0 -iiid1cates the-base of-t'hemulti-stage com ressoig and air pump,uponwhichis mounte the frame 11,;supportingat-its;upper end the scaveng ing cylinder formation, the lowerhead and-thewallsl3; of whichmaybe integral with the said frame, as a matter of convenient -constructiori; Between-the base and the cylinder, the frame is provided at its sides with recesses 14 and 15 for the accommodat-ion of the several coolers co-operating'with the c0mpressor,as will be'later described; 1
Upon the opposed inner walls of the narrowed or constricted part 16 of the frame, and-in the rear ofthe said recesses,
vertical guides 17- and 18 are formed, these guidesdirectingI the movements of a sliding cross head 19-, to which the piston rod 20 is connected at its lower end. The cross head is; also connected to the shaft 21 and crank 22 thereon through the pitman 23,. so that by means of; the construction described the piston rod- 20 is actuated t'oimpart the desired; motions to the several pistons with which-the construction is=provided.
The opening leading from the-constriction 16 oh the frame into the scavenging oylinder'through-thehead 12, is olosed-byaplug 24, seated in the saidopening to form a tight joint, andthe pistonpassing.
through the plug is packed as at 25. The
'ingcylinder 13. I p w A duplex or double duty compressionupper head 26 of the scavenging cylinder is constructed so as to permit the circulation 0t water to effect cooling and retard rise. in its-temperature. The piston 27, attachedto the piston rod 20,- operates in" the'scaveng.
cylinder 30,. also water cooled,.-
mounted 4 uponthe head=2h,. which latter is provided with a central openingthrough which movesis formed wit a piston. ea en; up of which functions withnthe upper 33 of the; cylinder as a low or firststage oomsfi press'o'r (I) for the air, thelower side o the piston acting. as an tinterm ate or second-stagecompressor- ,(II)]@ on the reverse stroke of the pistoni,

a feeding-pipe 1 to he low pressure chainber (1),.and an outlet valv'e 42, conducts the air in its state 015 initialcompression through pipe 4:3 to. the low pressure cedar 44, arranged in the r cess. 14 iii' the frame 11,.after' which the air i's 'assed through a; bafiie 45, arranged" u on t'e'f'r'ame 11 and constructed so as to i recess 14/ I i The intermediate pressure cham'he'r is providedwith" an inlet valve 46, to which the air admitted into the chamber hajs'heefi' subjected? to intermediatecompression, it passes through an outlet valve 48,and is con;- ducted by a pipe 4'9 to the intermediate'c'ooh er 50, arranged in the rec'e'ss'lfi in the name 11, after which it passes ,int'o ahafiie 51, formed asa feature in the construction of theplate 52, which covers'the recess 15.
From the bathe 51, the air passes through a pipe 53 to the inlet valvelSfi, with which the high pressure chamber (III); is'provid'edi After being subjected t6: the third stage or high pressure in this chamber, the ajrf asses thereirom through the uuetvalve 55 a'nd-iis conducted by the pipe 56 to the third o'o'ole'r I A I. orm a closure for the a tuhularplun er 31,-the upper end ofi which.
. r 1 er side:
"scavengingjcylinder is provided at'one side stroke of the piston-27i A 'ca'sing 71 at "tached'to the cylinder "formsa-iclosur'e for and a cap piece 61, arranged at one side of the cylinder 13 completes the conduit. The
w-ith inlet valves 62 and 63, operating in ports 64 and 65 'formed in the cylinder and through which the air is admitted at each stroke of the piston 27 working in the cylin' "der 13. The cylinder is also provided uponits"'other iside with outletvalves 67 and 68 leadingfrom ports 69 and 70, which likewise act'to pass the air from' t-he cylinder 'a't eachthe space about theoutletports' and valves,
and the ai r under pressure is forced there from into and is directed by the scavenging manifol'dof the engine.
The piston rod20 is shouldered as at to form a rest for the piston 27, which is held in position by the nut 81, threaded upon and connecting the reduced intermediate section 82 'Withthe'section 20. The tubular plunger '31're'sts at its lower" end in a concentric depression 83 formed in the contiguous face of the piston 27, and embraces at its upper end the reduced portion 82. Beyond the line of such engagement, the piston rod is further reduced in diameter a s'at 84. The opening in-th 'piston 32 at the'upperend of the tubular member 31 is enlarged for the 'rec'eption of a collar or head 84 upon the upper end of the section 82, the collarbeing seated" in'the bottom of such enlargement, and holding the tubular member 31 in its position upon the piston 27, through the connection between the sections 20 and 82. a I
Into the said enlarged opening in the piston 32, the lower end of a sleeve 86 carrying the high pressure piston 35', mounted upon and. secured to the upper section 84, is threaded so as to clamp t e collar 85 against the seat formed in the piston 32. The connection between the reduced section 84 and the sleeve 86 causes the composite piston rod 20 and the elements assembled thereon to move as one part.
Tight joints at all points where connection is made will be insured by the use of copper gaskets in such connections. The valves employed in the apparatus are of usual or suitable construction.
Two distinct purposes are subserved by supplying air at different pressures, that at low pressure being admitted for combustion, and that at high pressure for atomizing the fuel, both inflows being kept separate until Patent of the United States, is: v
' ing' means therefor;
entered into the combustion chamber at different times,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters 1. A compressor and scavenger comprislng a plurality of compression cylinders providing for compression in three successive stages ranging from low to high, pistons operating in such cylinders to effect compression in the order named, a scavenging cylinder, a piston therefor,- a piston rod connection common to all of the pistons, a
