Application filed September My invention relates to a plier construction.
Among the objects of the invention are: to provide a plier construction having a superior gripping power; to provide a plier which will be simple in construction and which will not be subject to excessive wear; to provide a plier construction in which the jaws are normally urged toward each other, whereby the jaws may constantly tend to grip an object,
Other objects will be apparent as the specification proceeds.
Briefly stated, in the preferred form I em ploy a jaw member rigid or integral with one handle member. A second jaw is pivotally mounted relatively to the first mentioned jaw, and a second handle member is provided which handle member is movably connected to both of said jaws. If desired, a spring may be provided for urging the jaws in one direction relatively to each other, this direction preferably being toward closed position.
In the drawings which show, for illustrative purposes only, a preferred form of the invention Fig. 1 is an edge view of a plier construction illustrating features of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a side view in elevation of the pliers shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, parts being shown in section and the plier being in open position.
In said drawings, 5 indicates a handle member which may be of conventional form. A jaw member 6 is formed integral with or is rigidly connected to the handle member 5. A second jaw 7 is pivotally connected to the jaw 6 and, in the form shown, I form a cylindrical boss 8 on the jaw 6 and pro vide the jaw 7 with a complementary, cylindrical, transverse groove to fit over the boss 8 and thus pivotally, connect the jaws 6 and 7. A second handle member 9 complementary to the handle member 5 is provided and, in the form shown, the upper end of the handle member 9 is bifurcated thus providing two side plates 99 fitting over the two 'aws 6-7 and supporting the latter on the handle member 9. The bifurcated end of the handle 9 may be pivotally connected at 10 to the jaw 7 and may be pivotally and slidably connected to the jaw 6. longitudinal slot 11, and a pin 12 carried by the forward part of the handle 9 is pivotally and slidably mounted in the slot 11. If desired, a spring 13 may be placed in the slot 11 and may act at one end against the pin 12 and at the opposite end against any abutment, for example, the lower horn end 14: of the jaw member 7. 1 i The operation of the plier may be as follows:
lVith the parts in the position shown in Fig. 3, the object to be gripped is placed between the jaws and the handle members 5--9 brought toward each other. During this movement, the pivotal mounting 10 pern'iits the jaw 7 to rotate slightly relatively to the jaw 9, and the pin 12 slides and rotates upwardly in the slot 11. During this movement, the two jaws are brought together and the pivotal mounting 8 between the jaws causes the same to always move toward and away from each other in a certain and definite path. The pivotal arrangement shown provides for a very powerful gripping action between the jaws upon the application of a relatively slight force on the handle members. If the spring 13 be employed to normally urge the jaws 67 toward each other, the pliers may ratchet about an object which it is desired to turn, and there will be slight danger of the liers becoming disengaged from the object eing operated upon. The spring 13, however, is not essential to the operation of the plier since the handles 59 may be moved in both directions manually as in the usual plier construction.
The jaws 6-7 may be provided with any suitable type of gripping faces, shear blades or the like, that particular feature not being a part. of the present invention. I have illustrated serrated gripping faces 15 on the jaws, and gripping faces of this type are more fully disclosed in my co-pending application, Serial No. 106,322, filed May 3, 1926.
By my improved construction, there is provided a plier having a powerful gripping force. If the spring be employed, the jaws will normally be maintained in closed position, and when working on an object, the jaws are maintained in contact therewith. and there is substantially no lost motion in any of the pivotal connections. lVhen using the pliers for turning objects such as nuts,
rods, and the like, by applying an increased force on the handle member 9 in a'clockwise direction as viewed in Figs. 2 and 3, the gripping force of the jaws is greatly in creased.
While the invention has been described in some detail and one specific form shown, I do not wish to be strictly limited to that particular form since. changes may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim 1. In a plier construction, a handle member, a jaw member rigid therewith, a second j aw member pivotally connected to said first mentioned jaw member and handle, and a second handle member pivotally connected to both of said jaws, forwardly of the pivotal connection between said jaws.
2. In the combination defined in claim 1 and spring means for urging said jaws together.
3. In a plier construction, a handle member, a jaw member rigid therewith, a second jaw member pivotally mounted relatively to said first mentioned jaw member and handle, a second handle and member pivotally connected with one of said jaws, and having a sliding and pivotal connection with the other of said jaws, both pivotal connections of the second handle being located forwardly of the pivotal connection between the aws.
4. In a plier construction, a handle member, a jaw member rigid therewith, a second aw member pivotally mounted relatively to said first mentioned jaw member, a second handle member movably secured to one jaw member and pivotally connected with the other jaw member, said handle member and jaw member rigid therewith lying at one side of a plane passing between said jaws and between said handles.
5. In a plier construction, a handle member, a j aw member rigid therewith, said jaw member having a slot therein, a second bandle member carrying a pin slidable in said slot, a second jawmember pivotally mounted on said last mentioned handle member, and a pivotal mounting for pivotally connecting said jaws, rearwardly of the pivotal connection between said second jaw member and said second handle member.
