In operationy the operator graspsf thehandles and opens the jaws, holding the implement so that the lips 10 and 11 are toward the head. The amount of hair to be treated at one operation is then held away from the head and the tool manipulated so that this hair will pass between the jaws, resting temporarily on the bars which are then raised. rThe jaws are then closed snugly so that the hair will be pinched or clamped between the lips l0 and ll, while freely passing between the teeth of the various rows. Vith the closing of the jaws the housing of the heating element comes in contact with the hair confined between the jaws, as will be evident, and imparts the necessary heat to the hair,
lThe hair will then have a slight wave imparted thereto in a vertical transverse plane owing to the offset alinement of the clamp-r ing lips, the top of the release bars 20 and the bottom face of the element housing. Up to this time the slide is not 'disturbed but as soon as the jaws are firmly closed as above desc'ribed, the linger pad l5 is engaged by the thumb or finger so as to draw the slide along. Since the hair is disposed between. and engaged by the movable slide teeth and the relatively stationary jaw teeth as well, this movement of the slide causes the hair to be drawn longitudinally of the implement into a transverse horizontal wave between the stationary jaw. teeth. lf the slide is 'left in this position vfor some time and the jaws are likewise held closed, the hair will retain the wavedformation into which it has been thus drawn. When moving the slide no pull on the hair is imparted to the head, sincey the lips 10 and 11 hold the hair clamped against movement adjacent the head, while at the same time said hair is free to slide between the teeth on the oppoiste side of the implement.
When the jaws are again opened the bars automaticaly raise as before described and clearthe hair from the teeth. rlhe implement may be then readily disassociated from the hair `without danger of the latter becoming entangled in the teeth or being pulled and without disturbing the formed wave. The member 15 is then released, whereupon the. slide will automatically return to its original position, due to the action of a spring 12a connected to the bar 4 andone of the straps 14. VThe implement is then ready for the next curling operation.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfills the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail'the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations A from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a. departure from thejspirit ofthe invention, as del-med by the appended Claims.
Having thus described my invention, what claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A hair-waving implement comprising opposed jaws between which the hair to be waved is placed transversely, heating means for the hair mounted in connection with one jaw, means for clamping the hair along one side of the jaws, means on the other side of the jaws preventing movement of the hair longitudinally of the implement while lpermitting free sliding movement of the hair transversely of the jaws', and means' for drawing the hair lengthwise in the-implement between the sides of the jaws.A

A hair-waving 'implement comprising opposed jaws between which thehair to be waved is placed transversely, heating means t for the hair mounted in connection with one jaw, cooperating clamping lips along the jaws at one side and between which the hair passes, cooperating upstanding teeth'along the opposite side of the jaws between'which the hair also passes, and means for drawing the hair longitudinally of the jaws between" said teeth and the clamping lips.y Y
3.*A hair-waving implement comprising opposed jaws between which the hair to be waved is placed transversely, heating means for the hair mounted in connection with one jaw, means for drawin the hair lengthwise of the implement toorm a wave therein intermediate the opposite sides of the jaws, upstandingteeth provided with the aws and between which the hair is disposed when the jaws are closed, bars on which the hair rests arranged in connection with the jaws lengthwise thereof, links pivoting the bars at one end onto one jaw, and link means between the other end of the bars and the jaws arranged to cause said bars to lie adjacent the base of the teeth when the jaws are closed, and to be moved so that thehair supporting surface of the bars lies outwardly of the points ofthe teeth when the jaws are' spread.
4. A hair waving implement including a pair of opposed jaws, male and female jaw units; the male unit comprising a longitudinal element and teeth along the sides thereof projecting toward the female jaw unit; and the female unit comprising a lon gitudinal element, teeth along one side thered of disposed outwardly of the corresponding row of teeth of the male unit, and a plate along the other side of the last named element disposed outwardly of the other row of teeth of the male unit; hair clamping lips along the adjacent edges of said plate and first named unit, and a heating device mounted on said last named element and projecting toward the other element in the space between the rows of teeth ofthe male unit in spaced relation to said teeth.
