an intermediate threaded portion therebelowto cooperate with 4a riutili,
the purpose of Which will be more fully pointed out hereinafter. Cooperating With the tapered portion'. ofthe spindle 12, is a coupling socket having clamping screws 16 therein for engaging the arbor 17 extendv ing through the socket.. Secured tothe .upper end of the arbor 17 in 'any desired manner, is a rocker'seat V19 having its upper sun face concave'd to cooperate with4 the rocker `20.y For holding the rockerandrocker seatV in' cooperative relation, there may be provideda machine bolt`21 extending through the opening 22 in the rocker seat and threaded into the bottom oftherocker. TheOpening 22 preferably has a diameter consider'- ably greater than the diameter of the'bolt 21 to permit the rocker to have alimited universal movement Von therocher seat.- Suitf ably sccuredltosthe rocker and extendin'gupj Wardly therefrom, is a. Center pin`723 for relv ceivingthe casting C being operatedupon.
By providing a threaded connection between Y the center pinand. the rocker, it will be rap# parent thatthese pins may be interchange'd Vas found necessary Vto cooperate with )the particular feasting.-V At its lower end the VVspindle 12 cooperates-With afthrust ball 24 l carried by thefthrust'cap 25 suitably secured Vse to the lower endof theelevating screw 4. "Adjustablymounted on the bed plate 1,
and securedfin position by suitable fastening vbolts Aextending' through Ythe radially eX- tendingopenings 2 vtherein,'are sector-shaped hollow .brackets 26 having guideways 27 formed in their upper'portions to cooperatev with horizontally movable carriages 28.
The brackets 26 maybe-initially set on'the bed plate at a uniform distance from the center of the spindle 12 by providing a clamping ring 29 shaped tolco'operate With. and hold inV position vthe inner ends of each of the brackets. I In the present machine, there are illustrated tive such brackets 26, each carrying a carriage 28 provided with a iinishf n ing-element 30.- "These finishing elements 30 are mounted on shafts 31 journaled 'in suitable 4`bearings 32 on the carriages. Secured to eachof the shafts '.31 'is a'. Worm Wheel 33 meshing with a1 suitablyjournaled, horizon'-V tallyextending Worin 34 adapted Vtobe driven byfa pulley 35 cooperating with a driving belt 36. lThe driving belts pass from each of theV pulleys 35over a driving pulley"371indev y i' pendently driven by` a v'motor38 mountedon each `of theA carriages 28. .w
By `reasonjof this construction 'it Will be Y" apparent that the finishing elements 30 may be continuously rotated, and by reason Vof 'their position around the casting C are effec- .tive simultaneouslyon a lplurality of points Y von theperiphery of the casting, thereby per-V forming a, shaping and'smoothing operation ,Whichhardens fthe casting `without removl ingr-any ofthelbodyportion thereof. `providingfa non-uniform 'arrangement of finishing elements, desirable results are produced,as all portions of the castings are subjected to a finishing operation. The provision of" a series of openings 2 in the bed plate permits the brackets' to beset at unequal dis-` tances around the b ed plate, whereby Vthe Vfinishing elements are effective on peripheral `pointsU-of thev castings Which-arel unevenly spaced. In this manner, castings having diametrically` opposite imperfections are effectively finished, as each portion of the periphery `is' subjected to the desired finishing action of ythe finishing. elements.
` In order toadapt the inachineto'castings y vide meansfor moving the carriages 28and their finishingV `elements inwardly or out v of various diameters, itisnecessary ,to pro- Wardly in a'radial direction. Thisis accoi`nplished in the present machine,'b y radially extendingV lshafts 39 'carried' by 4the brach,-

At their inner ends Athe shafts 39 carry pinions 41-meshing With'a'bevel Ygear 42 rotatably mounted on a sleeve V43A carried by the elevating screw 4. The pinions 41 are `partially enclosed by a fshield v44 secured to the upper end ofthe sleeve 43.-
Theouter ends of the shafts 39 maybe prov vided VWith squared portions 45'. to 'cooperate with hand cranks 46(1'It; Will be apparent that rotation ofone of the shafts 39 will be effective for simultaneously rotating all of the other shafts 39 through-the bevel gear 42. lVithinthe brackets 26 are secured'to the shafts 39 bevel gears 47 cooperating With similar gears 48 on verticallyextendingl shaft-s 49 journaled in the brackets," At their upper ends theseshafts 49'jcarryfa sec-v ond bevel. gear 50 cooperating Witha similar gear 51 on the carriage adjustingscrews 52. The gears 51ha've the openings there'-V tl'irough threaded toy cooperateV :with Vthe threads on Vthe adjusting vscrews 52. VThese screws arepievented normally from rotat-` ing under the action of the gears51 by col' r dial 56,` as shoivii'in detail in Figure 6,v yenabling the operator to determine theexact position .of each, ofV the finishing ele- Y ments YIn 'caseY the finishing elements are unevenly positioned, the plates 54 are ie-V y vleased by loosening the bolts 55, and thel adV justing vscrew/vs 52 are independently' turned by applying a1-suitable crank" or Wrench'to their squared outer ends 57. Thereafter the plates 54 areagain ,tightened rso that operi' ation of one ofthe shafts 39 Will be effective Vfor simultaneously adjusting'all ofthe finishing elements. The shafts '39 may 'also have secured thereto a divided circle or dial 58as shown .in detail in 'Figure 5, cooperating with .an index 5,9 secured to the 'bracket 26. In'this manner, the positions of the `various `finishing elements -may tbe determined by an operator positioned at any one of the shafts 39. During the "finishing of the cast- Aing C, the finishing elements'SO will be uni-A 'lmly effective on spaced peripheral `points thereof, whereby the desired finished surj finish the peripheries of such castings it is necessary to ,provide means-for adjusting the vertical shafts carrying the finishing elements. vIn Figure 7, there is illustrated a modified form of carriage for this purpose.r
In this figure, parts corresponding to parts already referredl to are designated Aby the same reference characters having a Vprime affixed thereto. rlhe Iinner Vend of each of the carriages 28 is .provided with split bearings v60 adapted to rotatively support the transverse shafts 161 carrying the worms 84k". .lournaled on each of .the shafts 6l is a separate 'bracket 62 carrying the bearings 32 for the shaft 31. Extending rearwardly from the bracket 62- is -a supporting arm 63 having an arcuate guide slot 64 therein `concentric with :the axis of rotation of the shaft 61 and receiving `a clamping bolt 65 by means of which the bracket 62 may be clamped in any desired angular position to which it is adjusted. Assuming that it is desired to finish a rought casting C of a` bevel gear., the finishing elements 30 are. eachbeveled land provided with teeth to .cooperate with the teeth on the casting. The brackets 62 are then swung to the proper angularrposition to bring the teeth on the finishing elements and the teeth on the casting into engagement. Thereafter, the machine is set in operation and the casting is shaped and finished. By journaling the brackets 62 on the shafts which drive the worms 34', it will be apparent that an adjusting means for the driving belts 36 is` unnecessary. j
By forming each of the finishing elements with serrated, corrugated or divided faces, they will present, in effect, a lplurality of hammers, and when rotated in engagement with the periphery of a casting, will produce rapid hammer blows distributed over the surface of the casting, 'thereby giving the desired results rboth as to shapingand hardening.
This method `is particularly valuable when used in connection with castings having their outeror lwearing surfaces specially hardened or composed of a hard alloy.
The term hammer faces kas kused throughout'the specification and claims is descriptive of faces produced by serrations, corrugations, ribs, Aprojections or .divisions of any kind in the finishing elements.
The present invention relates entirely to a surface finishing or correcting, and inno sense lto a metal rolling, rthe Ypurpose ofthe invention beingto produce a surface correction on cast bodies; Y y
`rJhe advantages of the Apresentvinventi'on arise from the provision of a. machine having independently or simultaneously adj ustable .finishing elements adapted to cooperate with spaced peripheralportions of the castings to produce a hardened and iinishedsurface thereon. j
'Furthor advantages arise from the provision of a machine in which the positionof any `or all of the finishing elements can be adjusted radiallyv or oircumferentially with respect to the casting and in'which'any de sired number of the finishing elements `may be brought `into or Athrown out of operation.
Still vfurther advantages of the present invention arise from the means'vfor adjusting the angular ,position of the finishing elements whereby they may effectively cooperate with castings off-various shapes.
