This invention relates to locks, and more particularly relates to locks especially suited for safety deposit lock boxes, and to the type which permits the customers key to be placed in a sealed envelope at the factory and not to be removed therefrom until the key is delivered to the customer.

T he principal object of our invention is to improve upon the construct-ion of locks of l" this character, with the view of obtaining concealment of the serial number of the customers key until it is desired to deliver this key to the customer. A further object of our invention is to provide a lock of the l5 character described, which gives added protection and security against being unlocked by an authorized person, or by means oi unauthorized instruments. A further object of our invention is to provide a simpli- 0 tied lock construction, which does not require the use ot' the customers key for partially locking it for shipping or for unlocking and relooking it ut will pending renting of the safety deposit lock box to which the lock is applied, but which cannot be un locked without the customers key after the serial munber oit such key has been ascertained. Other objects of our invention Will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.

but only when the tumbler has been manipulated into a certain position. Means are provided for preventing this tumbler from so exposing the serial number until the lock has been put in such condition that the customers key is required to unlock the same. The lock is constructed that, prior to the exposure of the serial number, the lock may be partially locked and unlocked to permit the door of the box to which the lock is ap- In order that a clearer understanding of our invention may be had, attention is hereby directed to` the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application and illustrating one possible embodimenty oit' our invention.

Referring to the drawings, Fig. 1 is a top elevation of a lock embodying our invention, the bolt bar being shown partially projected; Fig. 2 is a rear vienl of the same, partially broken away to show the serial numbei' of the customers key marked on the special tumblgr; Fig. 3 is a sectional view ot' the lock, showing the special tumbler eX- posed, the bolt bar being partially projected by means of the temporary guard key and the dummy key; Fig. 4 is a view similar to F ig. 3, but shows the bolt bar fully projected and the special tumbler pivoted by means of the permanent guard key to expose the serial number of the customers key; Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the temporary guard key; Fig. 6. isa side elevation of the permanent guard key; and Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the dummy key.

As before stated, the lock comprises a suitable casingv 1, cover plate 2, slidable bolt bar 8, having a. bolt portion 4 and locking stump 5, master key tube 6, with cam 7, for operating the bolt bar, guard key tube 8, and alternately nested guard tumblers 8 and master tumblers 6 commonly pivoted on a post 9, in a manner resembling that disclosed in said Patent No. 1,522,752.

In accordance With the present invention, a special tumbler 10 is pivoted on the post 9 intermediate the bolt bar 3 and the stack of master and guard tumblers. This special tumbler has a tail portion 11, which comes adjacent the guard key tube 8, so that the tumbler may be pivoted by means of a proper key turned in this key tube. rlhe nose 12 of this special tumbler has two recesses, one ot which, 13, is normally in alignment with the locking' `stump 5, and the other recess 1li being adapted to be aligned with the locking stump 5 only after the locking stump 5 has been withdrawn lfromA the recess" n13 and the tumbler pivoted by means of the proper key operating in key tube 8. rlfhe back of the case 1l is pro vided with an aperture 15, and the special tumbler 10 is marked on its under-tace with the serial number ci the customers key intended for the lock, as at 16. VThe aperture 15 is so vpositioned that in the normal posin tion ot the tumbler 10, the serial number thereon is not visible therethrough, and'is only visible after this tumbler has been pivoted in the manner above described.

The rear of the lock is provided with another aperture 17,. in' which is `seated normally the head 18 of ya screw 19, which is in threaded lengagei'nent withthe bolt bar. The relative shapes and sizes ot the aperture 17 and screw head 18 are such that the bolt is permitted partial reciprocation, just enough to take the locking .stump 5 out of engagement with the guard tumblers 8', butnot enough to take the locking stump out ot engagement with the master tumbler-s 6, nor out ot 'engagement with the recess 13 of the special tumbler 10, Only after screw 19-has been removed may the bolt bar be fully projected, in which case the special tumbler 1,0 will be released, but the master tumblers will also have been upset, so as to require the use ot the customer-s key before the lock may be unlocked.

Preferably, the special tumbler 10 is provided with a portion 20, which, in the nor# mal position of this tumbler, is closely ad jacent the front side of key tube 6 and in the path of a key being inserted into this key tube when the lock is in fully locked condition. Thus, when the tumbler is in this position, neither the customers key, nor any other key, can be inserted to the ull extent intoA this key tube until the tumbler 10 has been pivoted to remove its obstructing portion 20. This requires a special key, operable inkey tube 8, for pivoting the tumbler 10 to displace this obstructing portion from the path ot a key into the key tube 6. How-ever, unlessthe bolt bar is fully projected, such key tor the tumbler 10 cannot be operated, on account Vot the engageM ment of the locking stump 5 in the recess 13 of'this tumbler. t will be apparent that when the tumbler 10 is pivoted in the proper manner, the serial number of the customers key will be visible through the aperture 15 of the lock case, and at the same time the obstruction 20 to the entrance or" the customrecente ers key will be displaced, and the recess lil ot this tumbler will be aligned with the locking stumpV 5.

lViren the lock is shipped from the factory, the screw 19 is in place, and the locking stump is engaged in the recess 13 of the special tumbler 10, and thus the lock is in partially locked condition, asshown in Figs. 1 and 3. The customers key is preferably placed ina sealed V envelope at the factory, and the serial number is marked on the outside ot the envelope. Thereafter the custodian 01" the bank may unlock the lock and restore it to partially locked condition at will by means ot a temporary guard key 21, inserted in key tube 8, and a dummy key 22, or other instrument inserted in key tube 6, whereby the key tube 8 may be rotated. Vif'he temporary guardv key is cut Lmay, as at 24so as to escape the tail 11 ot the special tumblerV 10, for otherwise the key `could not be turned, due to the engagement ot this tumbler with the locking stump 5. yl`his temporary guard key, however, sets up all ot the guard tumblers, and since the locking stump holds all the master tumblers in alignment While the screw 19 is in place, the bolt bar may be projected tor the distance permitted by the screw 19, and may be retracted by means of dummy key When it is desired to place the lock in condition lor operation requiring the use of the customers key, screw 19 is removed, and the bolt bar is fully projected by means ot the dummy key 'this movement of the Vbolt bar upsets all the master tumbler-s, and withdraws the locking stump 5 out of the recess 13 ol the special tumbler 10. A permanent guard key 25 is now inserted into the guard key tube 8 and rotated. rlhis permanent guard key has a bit 26, which engages the tail 11 ol the special tumbler l() and causes this tumbler to pivot about the post 9. The serial number of the customers key is now ascertained by looking through the aperture 15 in the rear ot the lock; the sealed envelope marked with the corresponding number is obtained, and the key delivered to the customer. The lock now cannot be unlocked by means oi' the dummy key, because this key is not capable of setting up the master tumblers. The lock, however, can be locked and unlocked by means of customerls key, but onlyl after the guard tumblers have been set up and the special tumbler 10 pivoted to remove its portion 20 out ot position obstructing the placement et the customers key fully into the lock. lll/Then the customers key does not enter the lock to the i'ull extent, its bits will not align properly with the master tumblers to set them up. As many changes could be made in the above construction and as many apparently Widely different' embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

That We claim is l. In a lock of the character described, in combination, a casing having an aperture, a bolt barslidable in the casing, a guard tumbler for (logging the bolt bar, a special tum-bler having a Ikey designating mark positioned to be invisible through said aperture inthe normal position of the tumbler, said tumbler being movable into position exposing said mark at said aperture, said guard tumbler being movable by means of a key independently of said special tumbler, and said guard tumbler being movable and said special tumbler being disposable into position exposing the mark at the aperture simultaneously by means of another key.

In a lock of the character described, in combination, a casing having an aperture, a bolt bar slidable in the casing, a guard tum blerior clogging the bolt bar, a special tumbler having a key designating markpositioned to be invisible through said aperture in the normal position of the tumbler, said tumbler being movable into position exposingsaid mark at said aperture, said guard tumbler being n'iovable by means ot a key independently of said special tumbler, and said guard tumbler being movable and said special tumbler being disposable into position exposing the mark at the aperture simultaneously by means oit another key, and releasable means for locking said special tumbler against movement.

In a lock of the character described, in combination, a casing having an aperture, a bolt bar slidable in the casing, a guard tumbler-for clogging the bolt bar, a special tumbler having a key designating mark positioned to be invisible through said aperture in the normal position of the tumbler, said tumbler being movableV into position exposing said mark at said aperture, said guard tumbler being movable by means of a key independently of said special tumbler. and said guard tumbler being movable and said special tumbler being disposable into position exposing the mark at the aperture simultaneously by means of another key, and releasable means for locking said special tumbler against movement, said means including a projection on the bolt engaging in a recess in the special tumbler.

In a lock of the character described, in combination, a casing having an aperture, a bolt bar slidable in the casing, a guard tumbler -for clogging the bolt bar, a. special tumbler having a key designating mark posi-` a bolt bar slidable in the casing, a guard tumbler `for dog-ging the bolt bar, a special tumbler having` a. key designating mark positioned to be invisible through said aperture in the normal position of the tumbler, said tumbler being movable int-o position exposing said mark at said aperture, a recess in said special tumbler, a locking stump on the bolt` bar engageable in said recess, and temporary means preventing sufficient projection ot the bolt bar to remove the locking stump out ot said recess, whereby said mark is retained invisible so long as said temporary means function, said temporary-4 means comprising a removable stop on said boltbar and having a portion disposed in a slot in the lock casing.

In a lock of the character described, in combination, a casing having an aperture, a bolt bar slidable in the casing, a guard tumbler for clogging the bolt bar, a special tumbler having a key designating mark positioned to be invisible through said aperture in the normal position ot the tumbler, said tumbler being movable into position exposing said mark at said aperture, a. recess in said special tumbler, a locking stump on the bolt bar engageable in said recess, and temporary means preventing sullicient projection ot the bolt bar to remove the locking stump out of said recess, whereby said mark is retained invisible so long as said temporary means function, said temporary means being adjustable to permit sufficient projection of the bolt bar to remove the locking stump out of the recess in the special,
