TAPPET FOR INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINES.
Application led October 5, 1927. Serial No. 224,135.
In internal combustion engines controlled by means of reciprocating valves, the valves and their connective tappets, necessarily should be machined to precision in order to have proper co-operation between the valve and its seat, and the cam and its tappet, and when installed, owing to variation caused by contraction and expansion of the connective parts, carbon about the valve and its seat, wear on both the tappet and its cam, noncontormity ci action is produced, which notvonly affects the smooth and rythmatic operation of the motor and causes a loss of power and waste or" fuel for the engine, but also causes unnecessary wear of the operative parts and veXatious noise and clat-ter.
My invention contemplates a better, smoother, and more silent operation of the valve in its seat and the tappet in connection with its cam for actuating its elevating movement, besides which it has advantages for adjusting the tappet with respect to its push-rod or valve stem whereby wear may be readily compensated within reasonable lat-itude of the life of the structure and whereby noise may be reduced in the operation of the parts to a minimum, and whereby an engine equipped with tappets of like nature will run more smoothly and freely, than could be the case where tappets of the usual rigid one piece construction are used.
The objects and advantages of my improved tappet construction will be more fully set forth in the description following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specifications, in which Fig. 1 is a longitudinal elevation with a part of the tappet head broken away showing the connection with its push-rod, and
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of theadjustA ing thimble for attachment with the push ro Y As my invention is more particularly confined to a tappet and its operating push-rod, I have shown said tappet and a portion of its actuating rod, onlyit being understood that said tappet and its rod are actuated and occupy the usual position in an internal com bustion engine as are tappets generally in use.
As shown the tappet A, has a reduced internally screw-threaded stem l, terminating with a wrench hold 2, whereby said tappet may be held or turned in its connection with an externally threaded shank 3, of a takeup or spacing member B.
It would be obvious however, that in lie-u ot the wrench hold 2, as shown, any other position on the stem l, of the .tappet head below its operative position in its bearing on an engine would do for the purpose.
The take-up or spacing member B, at one end is enlarged and'screw-threaded as designated by the character 4, and between its threaded extremities'is formed With a blank space 5, in a form for being readily gripped with a wrench for -purposes of adjustment with relation to co-acting parts. Surrounding the shank 3, and adapted to abut the barrel extremity of the tappet, a jam-nut 6, is screw-threaded on said shank forl the purpose of preventing loosening of the parts 1 and 3, after adjustment. Extending from the upper end of a push-rod C, and interiorly screw-threaded on the enlarged end of the take-up or spacing member B, a thimble 7 is itted.- This thimble is bored to nicely slide onto the upper portion of the push-rod C, at which pointsaid push-rod abuts the enlarged end of the spacing member as shown. The thimble, aforesaid, extends somewhat below a head 8 formed on the end ofsaid push-rod and an annular groove 9, separating said head from the bottom of said thimble, the groove being for the purpose of receiving a split ring 10. y
The push-rod of necessity is somewhat of smaller diameter than the interior of the thimblekfor the purpose of receiving the retaining split ring 10, which lies on the bottom of said thimble and forms a shoulder for preventing the removal of said push-rod when in operative position. The ring 10, is introduced into the groove 9 when the pushrod groove has been raised above the free end of the thimblef, and said ring is machined to nicely fit within the chambered wall Vof said thimble and the groove of said push-rod when the parts are assembled. Surrounding the enlarged part of the take-up and abutting the enlarged end of rthe thimble 7, a jam-nut l1 abuts for purposes of adjustmentand to prevent the loosening of the parts.
Besides providing for minute adjustment thru the loosening of the jam-nut 11, and turning the take-up B after the tappet A and its jam-nut are tightened on the shank 3 of the take-up, the tappet and the associated adjustments may be removed from an engine independent of the push-rod C, and vice Versa.
From the foregoing explanation of the 0paration and advantages of my invention, a` more extended rsume, is believed Will not be necessary.
Having therefore set forth niy invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A tappet having a reduced interiorly screw-threaded stein, a slack take-up having a reduced exteriorly screw-threaded shank screw into said steina a jara-nut fitted on said shank Aand abutting said stein, said takeupv having' an enlarged screw-threaded eX- treniity, a thinible screw-threaded onto said enlarged screw-threaded extremity, a pushrod having an annular groove near its upper end fitted into a reduced open end of said thiinble and abutting said take-up, a split ring fitted into said annular groove and occupying a position Within the bottoni of said thirnble and its interior Wall to pre# vent the Withdrawal of said push-rod, and means to prevent the loosening of said thimble When said push-rod and take-up are i abutting position..
