readily associable with an individuals limb nor easily removed therefrom; 1
Further, spats interfere materially with 1 the accessibility to the shoes, especially to enable the shining thereof, and on that account it is highly desirable to provide a structure which is easily withdrawn from the shoe without necessitating the removal thereof from the limb.
One object of the present invention is to provide an inexpensive and improved spat to serve as a protective covering for the limbs of an individual.
Another object is to provide a spat having a detachable strap thereon to enable the cpnvenient withdrawal thereof from the s me.
A still further object is to provide an improved style for a spat which affords protection to the foot and serves as a protector for hose without creating the usual wear thereon. Y Other objects and advantages will appear from the following description of an illustrative embodiment of the present invention.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side view in elevation of a device embodying features of the present invention. v
Figure 2 is a rear View in elevation of the structure disclosed in Figure 1, the spat being folded upon itself in a plane perpendicular with that shown in Figure 1.
The structure selected for illustration comprises a body portion 10 conforming in shape with an individuals leg, the top thereof being turned upon itself to define a cuff 11 which assists in retaining .the form and .50 elasticity of the material in the vicinity thereof. The body 10 terminates in a distended portion 12 shaped to provide a forwardly projecting tip 13 which substantially shields the entire top surface of the wearers shoe to serve as a protector therefor. The tip portion 13 is defined by an arcuate edge 14. which inclinesupwardly along astraight line 15 to the heel portion of the foot so as to terminate. at a point 16 disposed sufficiently above the tip 13 to avoid interference with the region of ankle movement occasioned by walking. As a consequence thereof, the spat will not be inclined to work upwardly nor will it be subjected to the wear occasioned by movements incident to walking.
In order to retain the spat in position on the foot of the wearer as a protective covering therefor, a strap 17 is secured at one end 18 thereof to the lower peripheral edge 15 intermediate the ends thereof by stitching or other well known methods. The other end 19 of the strap 17 is provided with a button hole 20 or other suitable means to cooperate with a fastener such as a button 21 secured to the edge 15 on the opposite side of the spat, thereby preventing upward movement thereof.
WVith this arrangement, the tip 13 of the spat 10 can be withdrawn upwardly from the shoe to enable access thereto, the strap 17 being detachable at the extremity 19 thereof so as to readily permit access to the shoe without removing the spat from the limb. The interior surface of the extended portion 12 is provided with an elastic facing 22 which is stitched thereto as at 23 in any suitable manner near the peripheral edge 14.-.15 thereof to prevent fraying and to effect a snug embrace of the wearers foot to create a neat appearance as well as preclude foreign substances from entering the interior of the spat.
Obviously the body 10 of the spat may be knitted or otherwise formed from ribbed material of any desired quality, it being preferably composed of sections which are sewed together along the edges thereof to present the seams 24; and 25; however, it is altogether possible to knit the spat to define the tubular portion without resort to any seams or stitching operation.
Various changes may be made in the embodiment of the invention herein specifically described without departing from or saerificing any of the advantages thereof as defined in the appending claim.
I claim A spat comprising a body portion of ribbed relatively elastic material conforming closely to the shape of the wearers leg, each end of said body portion terminating in an increasingly distended section the front of the edge of the bottom section being arcuately shaped to provide a snug fit about said Wearers shoe, the rest of said edge inclining upwardly along a straight line to a higher heel portion, and a detachable fastening means extending from one side of said spat to the other which construction allows the upward withdrawal of the spat 10 to permit access to the shoe beneath, the interior surface of the whole edgeof said distended section being provided with an elastic facing stitched thereto to prevent fraying and to preserve the elasticity thereof and snug engagement with the shoe aforesaid.
In testimony whereof he atfixes his signature.
ADOLPH FRIEDENTI-IAL.
