A. C. FISCHER EXPANSION JOINT INSTALLER Filed July 16, 1925 Patented Apr. 3, 1928. i I
-,uNiTso STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT-G. msonnn, or cnrcaeo, ILLINOIS.
' EXPANSION-JOINT INSTALLER.
lpplication filed July 16, 1925. Serial No. 44,187.
In the laying of concrete roads it is of primary importance that the expansion joints laid therein are vertical, in order to give an absolutely square face to the concrete slabs, and it is desirable at all times to eliminate the wave which may be formed in the joint during warm weather, which may make an irregular face to the concrete slab.
My invention relates to a contrivance which is simple in form and yet eflective in meeting various requirements for this purpose.- One is to so anchor the expansion joint in place that the'concrete first poured against it comes in direct contact with the sides sufiiciently to hold them in place while the remainder of the concrete batch is being put in place.
slots are made-to receive pins. These slots are placed beside each other on either side of the joint when laying the two angles in place and the pin is then placed through the slots and a notch at the top of the pm is utilized to lock the angles into place, holding them tightly against the side of the joint, thus eliminating any wave effect and at the safne time supporting the angles in position so that the projecting ends of the pins can be driven into the ground. After the concrete is p'oured against this joint with the installing device, it is only necessary to press the pin back, releasing the lock, removing thepin and then removing the anglles.
Figure 1 is a perspective view i ustrating the application of the installing device to a preformed expansion joint strip.
Figure 2 is a detailed perspective view of the staking device.
Fi re 3 is a detailed perspective view of one orm of angle plate.
Figure 3 is a similar view of a modified form of an angle form; and
Figure 4 is a view in section showing a joint installation made with the use of the installing device. A better understanding of the invention can be had by referring to Figure 1, in which A represents the strip of expansion jointto portions as at D--D, ,and the pin E,E
placed through the slots OC in the flanges DD of the angles. At F is shown the notched shape of the pin which engages be neath the flanged projections of D-D' of the angle BB. Y
In Figure 3 is shown an angle B witha flanged projection D having slots placed in the flanges as at O. The purpose of these slots isto serve as a receptacle for the pin which holds the two angles into place or the one angle if only one is used, as the contrivance is so arranged that either one or two angles may be used. The flange is also utilized' for the purpose of engaging the lock on the pin F.
Referring to Figure 2 in which is shown the pin itself which consists of a piece of metal turned over, allowing for a crown as at E and downwardly projected prongs as at EE having'the upper crown portion recede to form a locking device as at FF.
-When this pin is placed through the slots in the angles it is pressed down and moved forward until the notches at FFenga 0 below the angle.flangesD-D. This holds the angles tightly against the expansion joint A, and prevents it waving or'sagging in hot weather. a
In Figure 4 is described an im ortant function of this installing device, as t e concrete ispermitted to set immediately against the lower faces of the joint, while owing to the anglesbeing removed slight recesses are formed on either side of the joint which it may be desirable to fill with hot liquid matter or paint in order to obtain positive ad hesion and an absolute water-proof crown 'to the 'oint. Thisis in consequence of this st 1e 0 installer and a result of the removal 0 said plates.
I do not wish to be limited to this particu- I lar style of structure as it may be satisfactory to have a lug astened to a flat plate and the in engaged beneath the lug, as shown in igure 5, in which B represents the plate and JJ the lugs. On the other hand, one of the angles may be omitted entirely and the pin p aced through one angle on one side and "merely over 'the expansion joint. on the other side, thus utilizing only one plate.
I claim 1. --An device for expansion joints, comprising a pair of metal plates adapted to enter into embracing relation with opposed sides of an expansion joint, said plates having outwardly presented flanges, openings in the flanges, and stakes separable from the plates adapted to engage said openings and extend downwardly over the sides of the joint for holding the plates to the joint and Vertically support the joint prior to the formation of the concrete sections between which the joint is to be installed.
2. An installing device for expansion joints, comprising a pair of metal plates adapted to enter into embracing relation with opposed sides of an expansion joint, said plates having outwardly presented flanges, openings in the flanges, and stakes separable from the plates adapted to engage sald openings and extend downwardly over the sides of the joint for holding the plates to the joint and vertically support the joint prior to the formation of the concrete sections between which the joint is to be installed, said stakes and plates being detachable from the joint after the same has been installed between said concrete sections.
3. A joint installing device comprising a pair of flanged plates having openings therein, and staking means for holding the plates in embracing relation with the joint and flush with the upper edge thereof, said staking means comprising an inverted U-shaped pin, said pin adapted to extend through said openings in the flanges of the plates and straddle the plate substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. An installing device for expansion joints, comprising a pair of flanged plates having openings therein, and an inverted U- shaped pin engaging the openings in the flanges and straddling the plates, for holding the plates with their sides in parallel spaced relation.
5. An installing device for expansion joint strips comprising a plate adapted to lie against the side of the strip, and a staking device for holding the plate in embracing relation with the strip, said staking device adapted to interlock with the plate and having a head portion adapted to extend across the crown of the strip.
6. In an installing device for expansion joint strips, a plate, a flange on the plate having an opening therein and means adapted to engage said opening in the flange and interlock with the flange. for holding the plate against the side of an expansion joint strip. v
7. In an installing device for expansion joint strips, a plate, a flange on the plate having an opening therein and means adapted to engage said opening and interlock with said flange for holding the plate against the side of an expansion joint strip, comprising a stake and a notched head on the stake engaging the plate flange through the said opening therein.
8. In an installing device for expansion joint strips, a plate, a flange on the plate having an opening therein, and means adapted to engage said opening and interlock with said flange for holding the plate against the side of an expansion joint strip, comprising an inverted U-shaped stake adapted to straddle the expansion joint strip,
and a notched head on said stake adapted to engage the flange through said opening therein.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, on this 14th day of July, A. D., 1925.
