BUSHING STRUCTURE.

My invention relates to bushings and their supports found in such structures, for example, as barrels where the bushings serve to receive plugs or bungs which are screwed 6 thereinto. My invention has for its object the provision of improved means for obstructing rotation of the bushing when the bung is being turned.
In carrying out my invention, the sheet 10 metal member which carries'the bushing is formed with a circular rim portion angular to the body portion and surrounding a circular opening formed through said member, said body portion of said member being dished adjacent said rim portion to form a pocket having shoulders at its ends. the unconnected rim of the bushing body portion desirably lapping the base of the rim portion of the aforesaid sheet metal member. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the pocket in the sheet metal member surrounds the rim portion of this member, this pocket being outwardly bulged away from the side of the rim portion to widen the pocket at one portion thereof, shoulders being formed at the ends of the bulged portion of the pocket. The first aforesaid returned portion of the bushing, therefore, surrounds and is spaced apart from the body portion of the bushing and the aforesaid run portion of the sheet metal member carrying the bushing, this rim portion extending into space between this returned bushing portion and the body of the bushing.
The invention will be more fully explained in connection with the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is one face view of a portion of a sheet metal member equipped in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a side view of the structure shown in Fig. 1 as with the bushing and plug or hung in place;

The sheet metal member 1, illustrated, may form a part of the structure which is to be supplied with a bushing, such as the end or other wall of a metallic barrel or container. This metal member is formed with m a generally circular rim portion 2 which is angular to the body portion of the sheet metal member and which rim portion surrounds a circular opening formed through said member. The body portion of said sheet metal member is dished around said rim portion to form a pocket 3. This pocket is outwardly bulged away from the side of the rim portion to widen the pocket at one portion thereof, as indicated at 4, so shoulders 5 being formed at the ends of the bulged portion 4 of the pocket. The bushing which is to be assembled with the sheet metal member 1 is'formed of metal and has an interiorly threaded body portion 6 surw rounded by the rim portion 2 of the sheet metal member. The bushing also has a returned portion 7 surrounding and spaced apart from the body portion of the bushing and also surrounding the aforesaid rim portion 2. The bushing is U-shaped in cross section at its returned portion and body portion, the rim portion 2 being-received in thespace between said body and returned bush- I ing portions, said returned bushing portion being received in the aforesaid pocket.
As illustrated, the returnedbushing portion 7 is a continuous ring which carries a second returned bushing portion 8 which is a segment of a ring. This bushing portion 8 is returned upon the bushing portion 7 toward the rim of the latter which is integrally connected with one rim of thethreaded body portion 6 of the bushing. The bushing portion 8 is received, where connected with the bushing portion 7, in thebulged portion 4 of the pocket that surrounds the rim 2 of the sheet metal member 1. The ends of the bushing portion 8 abut against the shoulders 5 at the ends of the pocket entie of the bushing is engaged with the end shoul--.

The unconnected rim 10of the bushing body portion is outwardly curled to lap the base of the rim portion 2 whereby the sheet metal member 1 and said bushing are permanently assembled. The bun 9 may be rovided with a surrounding ange 11 whlch laps the bushing rim 10, the rim portion 2', and the contiguous portion of the sheet metal member 1 which'surrounds the rim portion 2. A sealing. gasket 12 may be interposed between the flange 11 and the contiguous portions'of the bushing and sheet The arcuate returned bushing portion 8 may be spaced as far apart from the returned bushing portion 7 as may be desired to afford any requisite resistance to the turning of the bushing, the bulging portion 4 of the pocket being corres ondingly widened.
Changes may be ma e without departing from the invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: 1. The combination with a sheet metal member including a bod portion, a circular, rim portion angular to the body portion and surrounding a circular 'o ening formed through said member said ody portion of sa1d memberbein dished around said "rim port1on to form, with said rim, a pocket, this pocket being outwardly bulged awa from the side of the rim portion to wi en the pocket at one portion thereof, shoulders being formed at the ends of. the bulged portion of the pocket of a an interiorly threaded bu'shin having a body portion surrounded by sa run portion, a returned portion surrounding and spaced apart from the'body portlon of the bushing and received in said pocket and surrounding the aforesaid rim from theside of the rim portion which extends into the space be tween said body and returned bushing portions, said bushing having a second portion returned'upon the first returned portlon toward the connected rim of the latter' and itself received, where connected with the first returned bushing portion, in the bulged aforesaid sheet metal member, the outer Wall portion of said pocket where the pocket is outwardly bulged being formed to offer no material resistance to the turning movement of said bushing.
