c. H. WEITZ WATERPROOFING INSBRTION MEMBER Filed July 23. 1927 INVENTOR.
A@M%M BY %Z% M A TTORNEY.
Patented Mar. 13, 1928.
UNITED STATES CHARLES H. WEITZ, 0F PIEDMONT, CALIFORNIA.
WATERPROOFING INESEBTION MEMBER.
Application filed July .23, 1927.
The invention forming the subject matter of this application relates to waterproofing insertion members, that are to be disposed between the boarding of a building frame and the plaster stucco thereon, in order to prevent any leakage from the outside to the inside between the adjoining members of said building frame.
In the present practice after the building structure has been framed and boarded in, the boarding is covered with waterproof paper before the plaster stucco is applied thereon. The members of the framing, including the jambs, usually shrink, thereby creating more or lessof a clearance between the joints of the adjoining frame members. The water leaks through the said clearance and thereby causes damage to the walls of the interior compartments of the building.
An objectof the present invention is to provide a waterproofing insertion member to cover up the joints of the window ordoor jamb or other building elements, in such a manner as to offer an increased resistance against the leakage of water past the joints thereof.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a. waterproofing insertion member which may be permanently secured to the jamb structure, of an uncovered clearance when the jamb tends to shrink away from the other frame members. The said insertion member to be made of strong, but pliable waterproof material so as to completely cover the joints about the ambs and adjoining parts regardless of the shape or unevenness thereof.
A further object of the invention is to provide awaterproofing insertion member, which also functions as a stop limit to indicate the level of the exterior plaster stucco and thickness thereof.
Other and ancillary objects of my invention will be suggested in the following description and. in the use of the device of my invention. Certain of the objects, or certain portions or combinations of the objects of my invention may be attained with the use of less than all its advantageous features, or with modifications Within its purview. It is petitioned therefore, that my invention be limited only by the claims constituting its final determination.
In the accompanying drawings forming part pf this specification:
thereby obviating any danger Serial No. 207,896.
Figure 1 is a transverse section of the waterproofing insertion member per se; and Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of a buildin frame portion adjacent to the jamb of a window or door and showlng one form The long strip 1 is made of a waterproof material, such as light canvas treated with asphaltic material, and which is substantially stronger than the paper used for sheathing covering.
The clip member the length of which being equal the length of the strip 1. The clip is bent parallel to the longitudinal axis thereof so that it forms a reenforcing rib 8 and a stucco bearing and receiving portion a. i
In Fig. the structure of the framing is illustrated as comprising wood sheathing 5, a stud 6 and an inside plastered wall 7. A jamb 8, is secured to th'e'stud 6 and forms aportion of the revealt) of a window opening, for example.
Inthe use of my invention, the strip 1 is placed around the outside corner of the wood sheathing 5 adjacent the stud 6, and the clip 2 is firmly secured in the stud-jamb corner 10. by means of nails 11 so that all joints about the opening are covered. 1
The width of the clip 2 is approximately one inch, the usual thickness of plaster stucco on the exterior of frame building walls;
therefore the outslde face 12 of the clip is a stop limit and is adapted to indicate the level of the stucco thereat and also the thickness. I
After the clip is secured to the j amb 8, the pliable strip 1 is folded'around the corner of the wood sheathing so that the whole reveal is protected thereby. strip is secured to the wood sheathing at a distance from the reveal by any means, such as the nails 13'. The wood sheathing is then covered by a sheet of the customary waterproof paper 13, the edge of said paper overlapping the free end of the strip 1. p
The plaster stucco 14: is applied lastly. In the present practice the plastering in the 2 is made of sheet metal,
The free edge of the reveal 9 is uneven, because no means are gauge the correct thickness of provided to stucco thereat or to limlt the the plaster llU level of the plaster r-zurtare. The clip 2 clearly indicates to the plaster the level of the stucco surface by means of the reboot stop limit 3. The surface of the plaster stucco and the stop limit 3 may be coated or painted with a finishing coat simultaneously, thereby producing an even and uniform surface in the reveal 9.
The double function of the. clip 2 is apparent. from the aforesaid description, as the said clip secures the strip it to the jamb 8 and simultaneously forms a stop limit to indicate the thiclincsa ot the plaster stucco and the finishing surl'acc thereof. The strip, it is to be not l, is crimpcd in the. clip 2. and the unit is lixedl} secured to the jamb, therefore it; will atwa v.-.: cover the joints of the adjoining parts regardless of the sln'inkagc thereof. As stated, the strip is made of waterproof cloth or paper sutlieicntly strong to withstand the pull exerted thrcon by the shrinkage or limited relative movement of the adjoining parts ot the frame and to resist any high wind pres-sure tendingtoforce water therethrough.
The waterproof insertion member heretofore described may he used at any corner or part of a building :trame where it is necessary to provide particular protection against moisture creepage therepast.
In manufacturing the device. while the. various elements thereof may be (JOHHtl'llttltld in any suitable manner and of any suitable materials, yet it preferable to form the same of waterproof cloth and from sheet metal stampings on account of the cheapness, lightness and strength thereof.
From the :l'oregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and the method of operation will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains and while I have described the principle of operation. together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof. I desire to have it; understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made, when desired. as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim. as new and desire to secure by Letters mews? Patent of the United States. the following:
1. A waterproofing insertion member for covering the adjoining edges of a building, frame structure comprising, a pliable and waterproofing strip and a clip in combination therewith to secure an edge ot' said strip to one of said adjoining frame members.
2. A waterproofing insertion men'iber for covering the adjoining (ftlg'l'h' ol? a building frame structure comprising. a pliable. and waterproof strip, a clip in combination thercwith to secure an edge of said strip to one of said adjoinii'iu' mcnilwrs, and means on aid clip to determine the limiting: thickness of the wall covering to be disposed upon said strip.
2). A watel-proofing insertion member for preventing leakage between the jUlI'lt5 of adjoining. building frame memliiers comprising. a. pliable and waterproof strip and a clip in coinl'iination therewith and being adapted to be secured to one of said frame members: said clip comprising a bearing portion, and a rib portion to cooperate with said bearing portion to form a receptacle for the. wallcovering material and to determine the outside surface limit of said wall covering.
it waterprooiin; ill-til'illll member for building frame structures connn'isinc a pliable waterproof strip and a clip; said clip comprising a hearing portion. a bent portion 'l'orming an angle with said bearing port ion. a rehcnt portion cooperating with said heat portion for crimping said strip therein tween, and means to ecurc said clip to a.
member of the buildinc frame.
5. A waterproolinp insertion incmbcr for building frame structures com arising a pli able waterproof strip and a clip; said clip comprising a bearing portion. a bent portion forming an angle with said bearing portion. a rebent portion cooperating; with said heat portion for crimping said strip thcrcbetween, and means to secure said clip to a member of the building frame, said reheat portion being a. stop limit; to determine the surface level and thickness oi" the wall material to be disposed upon said strip and clip.
In testimony whereof. I allix my r=iennture.
