CASING FOR IMPELLER-TYPE WATER PUMPS.
Application filed April 13, 1926. Serial No. 101,828.
and more accurately formed, and that the cost of manufacture may be substantially re.- duced.
With this general 0b]ect in view, an important feature of my invention relates to the provision of a perfectly fiat finished surface on the wall of the storage tank or other structure against which the pump is mounted, and to the provision of a similar flat linished surface on the cover portion of the pump casing.
My invention further relates to certain arrangements and combination of parts whlch will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
A preferred form of the invention is shown in the drawings in which- Fig. 1 is an end view of a storage tank having my improvements applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation taken along the line 2-2 in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation taken along the line 3-3 in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view, showing a slight modification.
Referring to the drawings, I have shown a portion of a storage tank 10 adapted to receive the return flow of condensation water from a steam heating or power system or to receive a flow of any other liquid suitable for handling by a pump of the impel ler type. An opening 11 isprovided m a s de wall 12 of the tank 10, said opening 11 being substantially aligned with theaxis of the pump and constituting a supply passage through which the water or other liquid flows from the tank to the center or intake of the pump. 7
Ihe side wall 12 of the tank 15 preferably provided with a portion 13 raised slightly above the surface of the other parts of the side wall to form a boss for the pump and outlet pipe. This raised portion 13 maybe convemently finished by a' planer, milling or grinding machine,
or other suitable machine tool to provide a fiat outer surface 14 against which a cover plate 15 may be firmly secured by a plurality of bolts 16.
The cover plate 15 is provided with an annular fiat bearing surface 17 designed to engage the bearing surface 14 on the wall 12.
The center portion of the cover plate 15 is recessed to provide an impeller chamber 18 in which the impeller 19 of the water pump may freely rotate. The impeller 19 is mounted upon an impeller shaft 20 projecting outward through a stuffing box 21 on the cover plate 15. Any suitable driving connection may be provided for rotating the shaft 20.
The cover plate also contains an annular delivery or outlet passage '22 which communicates with an annular recess or open sided passage 23, formed in the side wall 12 of the tank 10. At one portion of its circumference, the recess or passage 23 communicates with an outlet passage 24, preferably formed in a wall portion 25 projecting inwardly from the side wall 12 and formed integral therewith. At the open end 26 of the passage 24, provision is made for clamping an outlet or discharge pipe to the side wall 12.
Having thus described the details .of construction of my improved pum casing, theadvantages thereof will be readily apparent. It will be particularly noted that no machine work whatever is required upon the large and bulky tank 10, except the provision of a single'flat plane surface upon the outer face of the side wall 12, which surface may be quickly and easily produced in a single operation by a milling or grinding machine or i1 y any other suitable high speed machine too Furthermore the annular portion 17 of the cover plate which contacts with the surface 14 of the side wall is also perfectly flat so that it may be formed by milling or grinding and may be firmly secured-to the wall 12. A close fit of the cover plate a ainst the side of the tank is thus very easi y attained.
Commonly a gasket of a desired thickness is placed between the side wall and the cover plate, as indicated at 28 in Fig. 4. This gasket may be varied in thickness to secure the desired amount of side clearance for the impeller in the impeller chamber 18.
One wall of the impeller chamber, it will be noted, is formed by the flat outer surface of the pump casing and the other or inclined Wall of the chamber is formed in the cover plate 15 where it may be much more conveniently machined, if such operations are found desirable or necessary.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed otherwise than as set forth in the claims, but what I do claim is:
1. A ump casin ing wal with an in ct opening to the pump and an exhaust opening from the pump formed therethrough and an exhaust conduitformed thereon and having a flat finished surface around said inlet opening, said surface forming a bearing for the casing cover and also forming one side of the pump impeller chamber, and a cover plate, having an annular flat finished surface engaging the fiat bearing surface of said side wall, said cover plate being recessed within said annular flat surface to form theoutier side wall of the pump impeller chamber, said impeller being located substantially within the confines of said cover plate.
2. A pum casin comprising a supporting wall wit an in et opening to the pum formed therethrough and having a raised flat finished surface around said inlet opening. said surface forming a bearing for the casing cover and also forming one side of the pump chamber, and a cover plate having an annular fiat finished surface engaging the flat surface of said side wall, said cover plate being recessed within said annular fiat surface to form the outer side Wall of the pump impeller chamber, the supporting wall having also an open annular outlet recess formed therein, said recess communicating on its open outer side with an annular discharge passage in said cover plate and said recess having also a pump discharge opening connected to said recess by a conduit across the back of said supporting wall.
3. A pumping unit comprising a storage tank having a side wall with an inlet opening to the pump formed therethrough and comprising a supporthaving flat finished surface around said inlet opening, said surface forming a hearing for the casing cover and also forming one side of the pump impeller chamber and a cover plate having an annular flat finished surface engaging the flat surface of said side wall, said cover plate being recessed within said annular flat surface to form the outer side wall of the pump impeller chamber, and the side wall of said storage tank having also an open annular outlet recess formed therein, said recess communicating on its open outer side with an annular discharge passage in said cover plate, and said recess having also a (pump discharge opening connected to sai recess by a conduit within said tank, said conduit being formed as an integral part of said side wall.
4. A pumping unit comprising a storage tank having a side wall with an inlet opening to the pum formed thcrethrough, and having a flat finished surface around said opening advanced beyond the plane of said side wall, said surface forming a bearing for the casing cover and also forming one,
side of the pump impeller chamber, and a cover plate clamped flat against said wall bearing surface, the center portion of said cover plate being recessed to form the outer side wall of said pump impeller chamber.
5. A pumping unit comprising a storage tank having a side wall with an inlet opening to the pump formed therethrough and having a flat, finished surface around said opening advanced beyond the plane of said side wall, said surface forming a bearing for the casing cover and also forming one side of the pump impeller chamber, a cover plate clamped flat against said wall bearing surface, the center portion of said cover plate being recessed to form the outer side wall of said pump impeller chamber. and means to determine the side clearance of the pump impeller in the impeller chamber.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
