MOLDING-MACHINE PLATEN ARM.

This invention relates to improvements in molding machine platen arms, and more particularly to swinging platen arms.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide a platen arm arranged to be supported independently of the hinge nn. v l A further object of the invention is to provide a molding machine with a swinging platen arm in which the arm has a finished surface at the top to engagea like finished surface on the frame so that when pressure is exerted on the arm it will be squared up by the finished surface contact and insure a rigid and parallel platen irrespective of wear on the hinge, and likewise insures an even pressure on a mold held by the machine.
A further object of the invention is to provide a swinging platen arm which is of very simple construction, is inexpensive to manufacture, is strong and durable, and is well adapted for the purposes described.
With the above and other objects in view Vthe invention consists of the improved platen arm for molding machines and its part-s and combina-tions as set forth `in the claims, and all equivalents thereof.

Fig. 1 is a side view of a moldingr machine having the improved platen arm; and
Fig. 2 is a detail' sectional view taken on line 2-2 of F ig. 1 and on a larger scale.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing it will appear that the numeral 5 indicates a molding machine of the type in which the Hask is reciprocated to cause the sand to be packed and squeezed by contact with a platen 6.
The machine is formed with an upwardly extending ortion 7 which is curved at its upper portion, as at 8. A hinge portion 9 is formed thereadjacent to receive the hinge end portion 10 of a platen arm 11, the portion l0 being bored to receive a pin by which means it is connected to the frame hinge portion 9. n
The free end portion of the platen arm is provided with an internally threaded bore into which is threaded ascrew 12 which carries at its lower end the pla-ten 6 and by operative full line position and when so positioned it is accommodatedby the curved portion Sof the frame. The upper edge of the platen arm is formed with a projecting portion 13 having a finished surface to engage a similar finished surface 14 provided on the under edge of the frame portion 8L Obviously, the platen arm may be swung `to an out of the way position topermit ready access to the flask and patterns. However, whenthe arm is in the normal position for operation a squared position will always be assured due to the engagement of the arm portion 13 with the frame. This will result in a rigid, parallel platen and wear on the hinge will not affect its position.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the improved moldingmachine with the swinging platen arm is of very simple and novel construction, and is well adapted for the purpose set forth.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a. molding machine, the combination with the frame, of a platen arm hingedly connected to the upper portion of the frame and movable from an inoperative position to an operative position in bracing contact with the frame, the bracingv contact being me- `dia-lly of the ends of the platen arm.
2. In a molding machine, a frame formed with a finished bearing surface on the under edge thereof, and a platen arm hingedly mounted in the frame, said platen arm hav-y ing a finished bearing surface on its upper edge medially of its ends for engagement with the frame bearing surface in one position of the arm.
3. In a'molding machine, av frame having a curved outwardly off-set upper end portion, a portion of said frame adjacent said curved portion having ak finished bearingsurface, a platen arm hingedly mounted in the frame and movable into said curved portion of the frame,.said arm having afinished bearing surface to engage the frame bearing surface to brace the arm affainst vertical strain, said bearing surfaces bbeing eov in contact in onlylone position of theV arm.
4. In a. molding machine, the combination with :L frame, of a platen erm hingedly connected to the upper portion of the frame and movable from an inoperative position to an 5 operative position in bracing Contact With the frame, and n platen carried by the arm, the bracing contact being at ay point distant from the hinged connection but at n distance less than the distance between the hinged connection and the platen carried bywtbe 10 arm.
