DISPENSING DEVICE.
Application filed January 21, 1924. Serial No. 087,406.
This invention relates to devices for dispensing soap in paste form or other plastic material and has for its primary ob ect to provide a simple and efiicient device for this 5 purpose.
My dispensing device is particularly adapted for use in machine shops, garages and other places where the character of-the work requires the providing of a soap capable "of removing oil and grease from the hands and face. This soap usually comes in paste form and has heretofore been quite generally packed in small cans. These cans are entirely unsatisfactory and distinctly wasteful in places where any considerable number of workers must wash at practically the same time. With my device the soap supply is always fully protected and is conveniently dispensed in the proper quantities to each person without delay.
The many other objects and advantages of my invention will be better understood'by reference to the following specification when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating a selected embodiment thereof, in which Fig. 1 is a front elevation, partially in section, ofthe dispensing device. Referring to the drawing, the dispensing device comprises a supply container or rcservoir 5 and a base casting or holder 6. The holder is composed-of a base plate 7 havin an upstanding annular flange 8 thereon. an a casing 9 formedon the under face of this plate. A discharging worm 10 is revolubly mourlzed in the. casing .9 and the threads of this orm substantially fit the walls of the chamber in this casing. An outlet or spout 11 is provided at the forward end of the casing. The supply reservoir communicates with the chamber inthe casing 8 through an opening 12 in the base plate 7. The worm 10 is manually operated by a handle 13.
The reservoir 5 in the present embodiment consists of an axially vertical drum 14 closed end of the drum is similarly threaded, as at 16, and is screwed into theannular flange 8 of the holder.' A feed screw 17 projects through the base plate 7 and is supported by a wheel 18 secured thereto. A series of .knobs 19 is formed on the underfa'ce of the.
wheel to co-act with the thread of the worm so that the rotation of the worm oauses'a corresponding, rotation of the wheel and feed screw. A resser plate 20 substantially fits within the ore of the drum 14 and the feed screw 17 passes through a central opening 21 therein but does not contact with the 05 plate. A leather cup washer 22 similar to, that used in pumps is secured upon the underface of this plate to prevent the escape of the paste between the edge of the plate and the wall of the drum. Oppositely disposed jaws 23 are pivotally mounted in upstanding lugs 24 onthe plate 20. The in-' wardly pro ecting end 25 of each of these jaws is threaded to mesh with the threads on the feed screw 17 when these jaws are brought into operative relation therewith. A curved arm or finger piece 26 projects outwardly from each of these jaws to enable the operator to slide his fingers beneath the same and swing the jaws outofoperative so relation with the feed screw. A locking ring 27 rests on the plate 20 beneath -the arms 26 and has an inwardly projecting flange 28 which normally acts to retain the jaws in operative position. This flange is cut away, 35
as at 29, so that when the ring is rotated t'o bring the cut away portions opposite the corresponding jaws, the jaws may be moved out of operative position by lifting the arms 26. The plate 20 is prevented from rotatin within the drum by a. longitudinal uide ri 30 formed on the drum.
In the operation of the device the manual turnin of the handle causes the worm to 'gradua ly force the soap in the casing 8 through the outlet or spout 11 and at the same time rotates the feed screw. Thisro tation of the feed screw depresses the plate I 20 and feeds additional soap into the casing 9 through the opening 12. The direct opo eration of the feed screw by the worm insures a positive feeding of the soap to the worm chamber. The portion 10 of the worm forms a gate to prevent the escape of a fille drumin the device, the ca at one end of the drum is removed. The older is prepared to receive the drum by releasing the jaws 23 from the feed screw 17 and rethis screw; The
moving the plate 20 from passed drum'in inverted position is next downwardly over the feed screw and its threaded lower end screwed into the flange 12 as far as possible. The cap atthe-upper end of the drum is then removed. The plate 20 with jaws unlocked is next laced upon the feed screw and depressed t ereonuntil it exerts a slightpressure on the soap in the container and thus-presses a slight amount of the soap into the casing 9. The ring 27 is then turned into position to lock the aws '23 in engagement with the feed screw. The cap is finally replaced upon the top of the drum and the device is ready for use. The
' operator holds one hand beneath the spout and turns the handle with the other hand. When the drum. becomes empty it is merely unscrewed from the holder and re laced by a filled drum in the manner descn ed.
It will be readily evident from the foregoing description that the contents of the .reservoir or drum is completely protected and prevented from dryingoutby exposure to the atmosphere. 'The paste is discharged as needed and a uniform feeding of the same to the discharging. mechanism is assured. The positive actuation of the Presser plate by the discharging mechanism is particularly advantageous as pressure is exerted upon the contents of the reservoir only when this mechanism is operating and the rate of advance of such plate varies with the mechanism. The device may be supported or mounted in various ways, but I have utilized a wall bracket 32 which makes the device readily accessible. It will be noted that the entire device is simple in construction and eflicient in operation.
I am' aware that various modifications may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, and Ireserve the right to'make all such as fairly fall within the scope of the following claims.
I claim as my invention: I
1. A. device of the class described comprising a reservoir for containing a supply of material to be dispensed, a worm chambercommunicating with said reservoir and provided with'an outlet, a manually operable worm within said chamber for discharging material therein through said outlet, a worm whecl actuated by said worm, a feed screw actuated by said wheel and projecting into said reservoir, and a presser plate on said screw and actuated thereby to cause the material'in said reservoir to be forced into said chamber.
2. A device of the class described comprising a holder, a reservoir detachably mounted on said holder to contain a 'supply of material to be dispensed, a discharge chamber 'in said holder communicating with said reservoir and provided with an outlet, a worm fitting within said chamber and operable to force the material in said chamber towardand through said outlet, a handle for manually actuatmg said worm, a feed screw said reservoir, a worm wheel on said screw co-acting with said worm to cause said screw to be actuated by said worm, a presser plate slidably mounted 'on said screw,'and' means for operatively connecting said plate and screw to' cause said late to be advanced by said screw andto orce the material from said reservoir into said chamber as said screw is actuated by said worm.

A device of the class described comprising a supply reservoir and a chamber communicating therewith and provided with an outlet, a wormfor dischar ing material from said chamber through sai outlet, and means for feeding material from said reservoir to said discharging worm including a feed screw in said reservoir actuated by said dischar ing worm, a presser plate normally slida le on said screw, and means on said plate for operatively connecting said plate and screw. In a device of the class described, the combination of a holder, a reservoir detachably mounted on said holder and adapted to contain a supply of the material to be dispensed, a worm chamber in said holder communicating with said reservoir and provided with an outlet, a worm rotatably mounted within said chamber and operable to force the material insaid chamber towards and through said outlet, means for rotating said worm, a feed screw rotatably mounted in said holder and projecting into said reservoir, a wheel mounted on said screw and havmounted in said holder and projecting into ing a series of projections adaptedto engage thethread of said worm, said worm bem mounted to one side of the center of sai wheel so that said projections will engage, said thread substantially over the agris of the worm whereby rotation of the worm will combination of a reservoir for containing said reservoir into said chamber and com asupply of material tobe dispensed, aworm prising a presser plate, a feed screw for chamber communicating with said reservoir actuating said plate, and means mounted on 10 and provided with an outlet, a worm opsaid feed screw for engaging the thread of erable in said chamber to move material said worm, whereby rotation of the worm outwardly therefrom through said outlet, is effective to rotate said feedscrew.
