Application filed ctober 12, 1925. vSerial' No.` 61,937.
The object oi' the present invention is to provide a post anchor whereby posts andthe like, for example telephone, telegraph and power poles may be securely anchored to shall not require digging holes t'or the rec )tion ot any one of the anchor units, each ual' being; applied by driving' the sanie directly into the earth. A further object et the :invention is to so construct the primary units ot the anchor in such manner that although they are separately driven into the earth., the);Y becolne securely interloclied together in use7 and have no relative movement.
The invention will be understood by roterA ence to they accompanying drawing, in Which Figure l. is a sectional side elevation ot the assembled anchor in operative position;
Figure 2 an elevation et the anchor blade showing;l in 'tracgnientary section rertain elements used in aliplying or Withdrawingr the saine, and i y Figure 3 is a sectional side elevation on the line 3 3, Figure 2;
Figure 4- is a plan vienv ot the anchor blade;
Figure 5 is a diagranuiuitic sectional vieu' showing` the guy rod head in operative engagement with the blade, and y Figure 6 iS a plan vieiv oi: tie `@guy rod head.
Referring to the drawinga l is an anchor blade, roughly rectangular in torni and at its lovver end provided with the iorlis l and a central longitudinal slot 'llhe surface et the blade surrounding; thc slot is formed with projecting' teeth 2X which vare designed to interlock with the-teeth ot the `guy rod head as later to be explained.
ln the present einbodinient oi" the invention, the anchor lilade is ornied with a square head 3X which is toi-ined with a threaded aperture Aperture Il is designed to receive the loiver threaded end et a rod by nieans of Which the blade niay be wit-hdraivn from the earth, ii desiree, Without tthe necessity of digging.
The second primary i'neinber ot the anchor comprises gruy rod head t Weich is T'ornied with a pointed lower end GX and an y enlarged rear portionn the upper surface of which is toothed at 7 in a manner corresponding to the toothed portion Qxoi' the blade. The guy rod head 6 is 'ornied with a threaded axial aperture 8 to receive the guy-rod Si), and the rod at vits upperend may be Yorined with siutable'ineans for` attachnient to the guy or strutcahle l0.
lt is not essential in practice that the blade a .d anchor head hc provided with surface interloelfingl ineens, but the provisionv of such means is desirable because it prevents relative movement between the two units and results in a more eiiicient anchoring` of the guy cable. i
ln the operation ot thev device the anchor head is first driven into the earth at an angle extending in the saine angular line in which it is desired to anchor the guy cable. yI have found it desirable to drive the head at a angle, or substantially in the angle illustrated in Figure l of the drawings.
After the head has been driven to the desii-cd depth, the anchor blade is driven into the ground in a line extending* transversely of the guy rod and preferably at substantially the saine angular degree. The blows of the driving inallet fall upon the t-op of tubular ineiuber ll and are thrown upon that portion of the blade surrounding its head 3*. The blade will be driven until its forks l* embrace the guy rod. Iii' the blade has been driven slightly out oit line so that the guy rod is not' directly opposite the slot `2. con` tinued downward movement of the blade will cause the inwardly inclined edges of the blade to so mutually adjustthe positions ofthe rod and blade that the rod Will Yfinally be caused to enterslot 2. In practice the blade is driven at such an angle as to initially embrace the guy rod at a point slight-ly above the head 6, and the subsequent` ten` sion of the guy cable l0 and strain upon the guy rod and head Will cause the latter to contict with the side Wall of the blade and cause the teeth to interlock.
AAfter the driving` of the blade is coinpletcd. tubular member il may be Withdrawn and also rod 5 iii' desired, or the rod may be lett in place to enable Withdrawal ot the blade Without digging down to the latter. i
The relative angles at which the rod and blade are driven to secure the bestefficiency may be deterniined in advance. For eX- a1nple,` itthe anchor head is driven at a ll-50 angle with relationto the lground line, and the guy rod is 6 feet long, then the distance between the ground surface point at which thc head is driven and the ground surface point at Which the blade should be driven is lUU lill
8 feet, 5 inches, the blade being preferably ing a pointed head and adapted to be driven driven at an angle of 45o relative' to the into the ground, and a blade adapted tobe ground line. The distance between the dlvdriven into the ground independently nl? the ing points for the anchor head and blade i'od and at an angle thereto for engagement 5 will vary with the length of the guy rod and with said head@ the blade havingr a Aforked 15 the angle at which it is driven. end adapted to embrace the rod.
Having' described my invention what I In testimony whereof, I have Signed my claim and desire to secure bywLetteis Patent naine to this specification. is as follows:
