PEEUMATIC EUMC?.
Application filed April 1,
My invention relates to pneumatic pumps adapted for faucet control.
rlhc present invention comprises an improvement upon the pump disclosed in my l copending application Serial No. 683,538,
liled December 31st, 1928.
An object of the present invention is to provide a novel torni ol valve structure, par-` ticularly adapting,l the exhaust valveto have a greater litt i'or quicker exhaust and more rapid lilling to increase the capacity ot the pump. A Yfurther object to improve the admission valve to provide greater ei'ectiveness in shitting the valve structure to exhaust position and holding it there.
'.lhis change in the admission valve structure accentuates a condition previously eicisting` in the original structure described in the aforesaid application, nam ely, that under certain specific circumstances occurring in installing; the pump, and which `will be detailed later, the valve structure tailed to re` verse 'from admission to exhaust position,
and thereupon the pump stalled and would "i not exhaust until live air pressure was` te1nporarily released and the operation repeated in order to start the pump.
A further object of this invention is the correction ot' this condition so that the pump invariably proceeds in an orderly fashion.
The invention comprehends certain other detailed improvements `which will be pointed out and claimed in the following,I specifica tion.
New in order to acquaint those skilled in the art with the manner ot coi'istructing and operating` a device embodying;I my invention, l shall describe in connection with the acconnianying craiving a specil'ic embodiment ot the same.
'the single ligure et the drawingI represents diagiannnaticolly a longitudinal vertical'section of a pump embodying` the pres eut invention.
,The pump shown in the drawing coinprises a head member 1 containing the valve structure hereinafter referred to and connectiens or live air, exhaust, and Water discharge, the barrel 2 and the toot portion 3. l/Vithin the barrel 2 and above the foot portion 3 there is disposed a low level control mechanism and discharge check valve mechanism indicated by the reference numeral Ll. rl`he head member 1 comprises a head casting 1927. Serial N0. 180,088.
5 in which there are formed certain passage Ways, to be described later, and threaded pipe sockets G, and 8. The pipe socltet 6 is connected to the live air supply, the socket 7 is connected to exhaust, that is, preferably a pipe runningl from the socket to a point above the level ol: Water in which the pump submerged and communicating with atmosphere. 'lihe Water discharge connection extends trom the socket 8 to the normally closed distributing system, such as the Water pipe system in a residence, or the like.
rthis pump is adapted 'for faucet control, that is, it is adapted to stand under pressure when the 'faucets are closed.
rlllhe Water discharge connection communicates through a passageway 9 in the head casting 5 to a central discharge pipe 10, this pipe being threaded into the bottom ot the head castingl 5 and extending down to a point adjacent the toot and there being connected to the structure 4. The lower end of the discharge pipe 10 is threaded `into a socket in the casting 11, said casting having a lateral opening covered by a plate 12, Which plate provides the valvepassageivay 13 controlled by the automatic checl: valve 14 for preventing.;` i'loiv of Water out et the Water `system or the discharge pipe 10 When the pump barrel is Vconnected to exhaust. The discharge check valve 111 is disposed eccentrically of the axis ot the pump. It has a stem 15 guided in the casting 11 at its rear endend a forwardly projecting extension 1G `auided in a spider termed on the plate 12. The valve is provided with a yielding)l face and urged to closed position by spring 17 to perform its function as a check valve. The lower end ol" the casting 11 has a recess 'termed therein axially, which recess ispartly threaded to receive the threaded portionl of a stud 1S), which extends down to the foot calming,l 3 and is connected thereto by a cap nut 20, which places the stud 19, the casting 11, and pipe 1() under tension to hold the head casting; 5 against the upper end ot the barrel member Q and the tootcasting 8 i,
against the bottom ot the barrel member 2. The toot casting` 8 has an annular Water inlet passageway 21 guarded by a conical screen 22 and controlled by the automatic inlet check valve 23, which comprises a block of `relatively hard rubber composition, or the like, seating over the inlet port and holding lll() ,ggg u the same closed against the escape of liquid Within the pumping chamber in the barrel 2.
A. suitable guiding and restraining member orthe check valve 23 is provided in the guide 2l, which is threaded doivn into the upperltace et the toot casting 3 and which has a flange over-hanging the inner edge ot the check valve 23 to limit the upward movement of the same when the valve is opened. rllhis guide is recessed so as to avoid binding the lock fnut 25 on the threaded portion 1S of the stud 1,9. rlhe conical screen 22 is held in place on the toot casting 3 by means ot the edge ofthe cap nut 20.
The upper end ot the stud 19 above the threaded portion 18, and Where the same extendsinto ,the recess in the casting 11., is drilled aXially and radially, as indicated at 26 and 27. rllhe upper end ot said stud emb aces the lovver end eta small tube 23 Which extends axially from the head casting 1 down through the Water discharge pipe 10, through the lower Wall ot the Water dischargeV check valve chamber, and into the axial recess 26 formed in the upper end of the stud 19. .A seal is termed about the lower` endof the pipe vl2 by a compressible packing 29 Whichis compressed by threading ot the stud 19 into the recess in the lower end ofthe casting 11.
The Vupper lend of the tube 23 is threaded into a recess 30 formed in the head casting` l, which recess communicates through a passageway 31 through the motor diaphragm 32 With the chamber 33 formed in the cap 34.
rhe radial drilling 27 in the upper end 'of the stud 19 communicates `With a passage- Way 35 Which, extends up to a valve ,port 3G controlled by the low level control valve 37, this valve comprising a lever pivoted at to the top ofthe casting 1l, and on the short armbearing the valve 37. rlhe long arm is shaped in the form of a ring embracing loosely the Water discharge pipe 10. At its outer extremity the longer arm has an upwardly extending linger 39 adapted to he engaged by the lower end ot the tioat Llll when the same is in low level position. rlhis float el() embraces'loosely the water discharge pipe 10. The valve 37 is held to its seat by the hairpin type spring ell, the
ends ofvvhich are secured to the longer arm ot the valve lever and to the casting 11, respectively. lVhen the pumping chamber in the barrel 2. is under pressure the valve v37, which has a yielding face, is held to its seat byV internal pressure in the pump chamber.
'The strolre control mechanism comprises a compound valve structure connected to the diaphragm 32. The head casting l is provided With a transverse bore which is divided otl vinte sections to perform various functions and closed at the lett by the cap Leashes 3l over the diaphragm 32, and at the right by a. screw plug 4t2. 'lhe relatively large counterbore termed at the lett end ot the transverse pas; "exray :terms a motor chumber a3. The motor chaniber lll is divided oli from the admission valve chamber Allby a plate which is perforated to l'orm :i guide tor the valve stem itl, which hears the admission valve. -iltl and the exhaust alve Al2).
The motor chamber lil comuuiuicatcs through a small, (.'ous-ztauily opeu passageway fl? ivigl .live air in thi admission valve chamber all. '.lhe chamber 'formed iu the cap 341 .n the bach ot the diuphraguu 32 communicates by way ot a pss `=ejewuy to the exhauf-tt paf-.Jigexvuy o?. lhif-l passageway 50 is rewtricti-d relative to the passageway 31 vvhich admitsl liluid under pressure at cci' -n times to the pressure chamber 33. i a result, vvheu the lou' level valve 3.7 is opened vvuter under pred-:lire is forced to the port 30, iliusr-izigeway 35, up through the tube 2o und through passageway 31 into the chamber Il'l more rapidly tl n the sumo can escape through the passageway 51) to tl' e main exhaust passageivay 51. Under those circumstmu'es a pressure is built up in said chamber er).
The faire #i8 comprises :i relatively thick body forming, in reality, a loose pistou iu the bore 52 in which it moves. the conical face of the valve -lcl cooperating vvith e valve seat termed in said axial pas frcivuy. The chamber 53 between the admiscou vulve lll and exhaust valve 4:9 coimuuuirates by vaag.' oit a pas, vvay with the interior olf the pump bar el 2, that is, the iuimpiug chamber.
rllhe pocket -lf 'l'ormed iu the cap :uid in Which the exhaust valve -ll is uduotcd to play, commlmcates by 'way ot the uxair cxhaust passagevvuy 5l to the exhale-1t pipe which is threaded into "loket 7.
The exhaust valve lll is campml iu on the stem lll by means ot the uut short collar lyine; heliveeu the exhaust vulve and the adniissum valve lll, so that these parts are rigidly connected ogchcr :it :i predetermined spacing'.
ln the pump disclosed in my prior application above referred to. the litt olt the eX- haust valve correspondi1.15,;` to valve -l-fl) was made relatively small so that the evhausl would in shii'timg` the valve structure to the exhaust position, and in holding` the same there during` the exhaust period. l have found that there is some diszulvautim'e in this structure in that it del y the rapidity oit su e which l desire 'tor maximum capacity oi the pump, and b v the couplace all. :1

extending ov shortens `the filling stroke and thereby increases the maximum capacity ot the pump. lt also tends to increase the life of the eX- haust valve 4:9, Which lor best results must be made With sullicient yield to insure a tight joint at all times. i lt will be observed that the length `ci.: the bore 52, in which the admission valve 48 plays, is longer than the distance which the exhaust valve lifts when it is opened. This, as Will be pointed out later in detail, secures the desirable results ot permitting' a large exhaust valve litt with certaintity el closure of the admission valve.
The motor chamber l-3, which communicates through the opening i7 with live air in chamber Llei, has an exhaust passant-way 5G extending,` down through the head and communicatingWith valve chamber 5T terinitiating in a valve port 5S controlled by the ball check valve 59 which tends to drop over said port and close the same, preventing the escape of pressure from the motor chamber 4:3,v The port 58 is formed in a bracket memberwvhich is clamped to the bottom of the head casting` 5 for convenience in manufacture. rlhe high level valve control lever 60 is pivoted at 6l on a bracket 'formed in said plate member, and at its shorter arm it has a pin (S2 extending up into the valve port- 553 to unseat the check valve 59. The longer arm oit the high level valve control lever 60 is formed in the shape of a ring which loosely embraces the Water cischarp'c pipe.
l0. il downwardly extending projection 63 is adapted to engage the upper end ot the float l0 when Water has substantially filled A small Wire constructed preferably of ll/lonel metal, or the like, shown at 64, `lies at the side ot the Water discharge `pipe 10 and is embraced hy the float 40. rlhis Wire (Se has a hook 65 formed at its upper end r a pin (56 in the projection G3, this projection being forked to receive said wire hook G5. At its lower end the Wire fiel is provided With a loop G7 which entends at right angles to the length of the Wire (ifland embraces the Water pipe 10 and lies in such position that it will be engaged by 'the lloat d() att-er the float has contacted with the i j fr 21h) on the low level valve control leveA dit 'lhc operation oi? the device shown .in the drawing is as follows. The parte are shown 'n the position in which they would be duringr the filling' stroke et the pump, the lioat 4l0` rising; with the Water level, the exhaust valve being open, the admission valve being shut, and the Water inlet valve 23 being open. isthc float l() rises it comes into con-v tact With projection GE on the high level valve control lever GO, removing the pin 62 from contact With thecheclr valve G9 and said cheek valve then seating over the port 58 to close the same. As the admission valve i8 is closed, live air does not enter the pumping` chamber in sutlicient volume to be etlectivaand after the vali-e 59 is seated, pressure which leaks through the small opening l? into the motor chamber i3 huilds up a pressure in said chamber` acting en the diaphragm until the total pressure over comes the pressure on the baclr ot the admission valve ed), whereupon the valve struc'- ture is shifted to 'the lciit with a relatively sharp snap action, closing the exhaust valve and opening the admission valve. Air then passes ictween the cylindrical peripheral portion of the admission valve i8 and the cylindrical bore in which it loosely li 1 through thc open port oit the admission valvev1 down the passageway 5l, and into the upper end oi' the pumping,l chiunber. pressure very rapidly builds up to the point vhere .it overcomes the head of the liquid and begins to drive the liquid level down- `n'ardly, the liquid opening the check valve ll andorcing its #ay past said check valve and up through the central water discharge pipe l0, threi sway E), and out to the dissystem, which' is assiuncd lo he open. to permit such 'flow ol the liquid.
is soon as tl iloat l0 has descended with il@ the descending' liquid to a point where it no longer supports the end oll the lever (il), the pin ('32 pressingn against the hall valve 5) iorccs the same 'from its seat. '.lhc lever (Si) Weighted or unbalanced to a degree sullicient to secure this result. -Very little torce` is required to lift the ball valve 50 from its seat when the pressures upon opposite sides of the same are suhtantially equal, and that is the case in normal oper tion.
As the discharge of Water from the pump chamber continues, the loat Ll() is lowered until it rests upon the projection on the low level valve operating' lever (58, and the weight of the :lioat el() overcomes the tcm-zien of the spring;` ll and the pressure on the, valve 3'?, opening said valve 37. lhercupon Water under pressure is discharged through the port 36, passageway 35, te the rudia opening 27 and thence up through the tuhi, 28, passageway 3l, into the balancing` chamber 33 formed in the cap 2id, a part ot the same escaping` out through the hlec/{unpI port 5() to the main exhaust j )assagcnfay 5 I, 'lhs entry of fluid under pri-insure into the balancing chamber 33 counterbalanccs the pressure on the opposite side in the nmlor chamber i243 to a sullicient extent tu permit the pressure oi air Within the pumpii f chamber to torce the exhaust valve LES) ell its seat. At the same time, there is sullicicnt pressure against the haelt ol thc admission valve i8 to assist in this operatioii, so that after the exhaust valve 429 once starts to open the valve system, together With the motor diaphragm, is snapped over to the right vigorously to shift the valve mechanism to lou (iti
exhaust posit-ion, whereupon the pressure in the pumping` chamber' is permitted to escape y to atmosphere and Water again enters the pump through the Water inlet passageway 2l, past the valve 23 Which opens to permit the sume, and the tioat 40 is reised permitting the valve 37 to be closed by die spring` lll. rihe tient LlO is Vli'loated upward by the rising level oilv Water in the pumping' chamber until it engages the projection S3 on the high level valve operating' lever GO to raise the long1 arm of said lever GO to permit the ball cheelr veli/co9 again to seat.
Thereupon, the operations above described are repeated.
lt ivill be observed that the live air admitted to the pumping chamber 'from the admission valve chamber 44 finds corisiderahle restriction to iioiv through the, clearance between the valve 48 and the here in which it moves, a Wire tirar-.fine etl'eet being; produced thereby. As a result, there are certain conditions when the pump is ,first installed which tend to raise the p essure in the motor chamber i3 to a valve substantially greater than the pressure in the pump ing chamber, with the result thru: consider able 'force is required to unseat the ball checl; valve- 59. This occurrs when the pump i'irst submerged in the Well and connections are made to the live air. rrssuining that the float el() is in high levelposition due to fillingv oli the pumping' chamber. the valve 59 beingl in closed position, the lever Gli being1 in raised position, the admission oi live air into the admission valve chamber lil tends at i'irst to snap the admission valve t8 shut until pressure builds up in the motor chamber 43, said air entering through the small port 47, whereupon the diaphragm 32 is snapped over to the lett, opening the admission valve 42S and closing* the exhaust valve 49. Since the Water discharge pipe is empty, no substantial back pressure exists on the pump,
and the entry of live air into the pumping chamber quickly depresses the level und forces the liquid out of the pump `without building' up any appreciable pressure in the pumping' chamber. As a result, the pressure diilerential between the air in the motor chamber 43 and above the check valve 5391, and that in the pumi'iing` chamber beloiv the valve 59, so great that the Weight of the lever (SO is insufficient to force the check valve 59 ott' oi. its seat. is a result, the float l0 dropping, doivn ivith the level, opens the valve 3T and VWater is driven through the pipe 28 into the balancing chamber butnot at sufficient pressure to overcome the pressure of the live air trapped in the motor chamber 43. As a result, the valve mechanism Will not be shifted, or shifting` Will be delayed so long that the pump Will not start satisfactorily Without release and reapplication of the pressure by hand control. The
conditions which ioster this diliicully in starting are not often eiuountered, but the present pump is immune to the same.
To prevent the occurrence ot this stoppage or delay, the lever (50 has been put under eontrol of the loiv level position ot the lioat lll through the. medium ol the vcire (il. its hook (l5, and the loop (i7. lt the initial openiiur ol the valve Si' does not secure reversal ol1 the valve mechanism, the vrater level cont/in ues to be lowered until the float engages the loop 6T et the wire (il, thereby iinposing,r the weightot the float Ll() upon said lever (iO in addition to its oivn Weight, 'llhis :idditional Weight great enough to torce the check valve 59 oill its seat to equalize the pressures in the motor chamber lil and Jthe pumping; chamber. so that the balancing' pressures in the chamber S23 is great onouejh to permit the exhaust valve to be sinipiied, oilA its seat and the :u'lxnission valve to be snapped onto its seat.
(lbviouslv other means than tl e particular wire (El and its connections could be employed within the spirit and scope ol1 my iuvention.
